I am a 67-year-old male from northern Idaho. Since my late teens, my friends and I would go across the border into Canada and buy Canadian music from various drug stores in Trail, Kimberly, Cranbrook, etc. You could not get the early April Wine albums in America. Needless to say, I was starstruck with the talent of Myles Goodwyn and April Wine. Searching for their music, lead me to other great Canadian artists, like Trooper, Ian Thomas, Max Webster, and a very young Bryan Adams. I was, and am still, amazed at the amount of talent that came out of our neighbor to the north. Often, those bands are much better than the ones we had in America. One of the highlights of my life was getting backstage passes to April Wine and meeting the band. They were all very nice people, I really liked Myles and Jerry Mercer in particular, both for their talent and for their personalities. I’ve seen April Wine seven times before Miles retired, and once since. His songwriting was equal to that of any superstar. His guitar playing was highly underrated; I thought he was one of the best of all time on lead guitar. He wrote beautiful songs, and he wrote a lot of rock ‘n’ roll Classics.. I am just grateful that old records never die! God comfort his family and his former band mates. Thank you does not seem nearly enough to say, but I am eternally grateful to Myles, and to his band. Rest in peace!
Great comment! .. if you get a chance, look at Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO), Joni Mitchell and Ian and Sylvia, who all had worldwide impact, and would be great additions to your collection of Canadian musicians.
The first time I heard April Wine, I was15 years old...the song was Drop Your Guns...loved them from the start...they are my fave band..then...and now...RIP Myles...your legacy will live on...
In the early 70s, growing up in new Glasgow Nova Scotia, every summer the Stampeders, and April Wine would always play at the local rink, my first show was for the Stand Back Album. And every year after that they played, until Frist Glance Hit in the States, than you had to see them in Halifax. A great loss for Canadian music, so sad😢
April Wine was huge for me as a teenager and I loved them even yrs later and got our kids into their music! Our 8 yr old daughter loves the song "Tonight is a Wonderful Time to Fall in Love"! Every time we go on a big road trip, she requests it and we couldn't be happier! RIP Myles. You will be missed!
Huge april wine fan here. Last convo I had with Myles was a few years ago. I had sent him some pics of Jim Clench’s resting place in Newfoundland. Jerry Mercer is also from here on the rock. Very proud that there has been a big NL connection to my favourite band. Love them, and should have made it bigger. Myles passing certainly hits close. R.I.P.
Big, big fan. Loved April Wine and Myles. Saw them many, many times including that night in 1977 at the El Mocambo...Oowatanite, awesome! RIP Myles, one of the great Canadian musicians.
Grateful to see one of the final shows, he played my neighborhood park . Summerfest 2022 at park 96 Calgary ab. R.I.P. Mr. Goodwyn really loved the music. Stand Back got me hooked many years ago. Thank you Myles you were a part of my glory days, great memories. Will be missed.
My favorites from Canada are April Wine and Triumph. Great voices, strong music and perfect lyrics. RIP Myles and peace and love to his family, friends and fans. Their music is so many of my memories.
At a concert we asked Myles about the song "Shot Down." A huge hit that we played repeatedly as boy teenagers. He barely remembered it and thought that he had to go back and revisit the song. That's how great this band is. RIP Myles you're already greatly missed. A true music legend.
I remember opening up for them wayyyy back. One of the greatest guitar playing moments of my life opening for one of my favorite bands and person, guitarists, songwriters. Prayers for his family and friends. RIP Myles. God bless.
Same here, Trooper & April Wine my 2 favorite canadian rock bands. Saw Trooper about 15-20 times and April Wine about 13-15 times. Myles has written so many great love ballads. His songs will remain among my favorites.
Hi i'm a 62 yo metalhead from Aus and got into April Wine around 77..classic sound and brilliant song writing and musicianship. Love and Respect from Australia.
Thanks for sharing. Being Canadian we grew up listening to their music in the 70's & 80's. Had the pleasure of seeing them in the height of their career in the early 80's.
My condolences 2 the Goodwyn family & April Wine Army. Big fan of April Wine here (from Detroit, MI, USA). "Roller", "Crash & Burn" (the song that ushered in the Thrash Metal genre), & their cover of "21st Century Schizoid Man" r my faves from April Wine. Mr. Beaudin; my condolences 2 u also gvn ur friendship w/Mr. Goodwyn.
Hi John, April Wine and Myles are up there for me. A beautiful voice exceptional son gwriter and musician par excellence. The name of the band perfect... his music ages like fine wine.... April Wine that is. Thsnk you for the beautiful tribute.love your channels
I'm 21 years old and love rock music. April wine is one of my favorites. It goes to show how much bands like April Wine can still reach people years after. I was very sad when i heard the news. Its such a same i don't hear their songs on the radio here in the US (or at least in my city). April wine was really underrated and never got the full limelight they deserved. Myles had an incredible voice. Like a lover like a song, you won't dance with me, rock and roll is a vicious game are just a view of my favorites.
Very touching tribute John, here and on your other channel the other day. I was very fortunate to see AW at Casinorama last year just before Myles retired. I absolutely love this band! RIP Myles Goodwyn ❤️
RIP Myles!!! Thanks so much, John!!! You're the best interviewer and thanks to you many rock sites use those interviews. Love your coverage and passion of Canadian Rock. It's so strange because I grew up in St.Louis and April Wine were huge for us in high school and then I moved to Toronto right after graduation and found out they were a Canadian band. I've fallen in love with so many Canadian bands and you make me aware and help me love them even more!!! ❤dب_بb❤
I feel like I've lost a family member. It brought tears to my eyes when I heard this devastating news. :( RIP Myles. He just played here in Saint John just last month with his trio. My guitar player from my band played a duo to open for his trio.
Sure, you bet I loved April Wine... (I'm 100% American too) But my all time favorite band, bar NONE is Rush!! My now wife turned me on to Rush back in 1976... We've been to every Rush tour ever since as well. I'm loving the latest news that it's a very strong possibility that Alex and Ged may once again, write and tour as Rush!! Mind blown!!!! 😁👍🏼
He had the perfect Rock voice along with Mike Renfro from Loverboy. Two great singers! I’m shocked and dismayed that the time has passed so fast and he was 75 already? Holy moly! Where did the time go? Decades flew by. Hard to believe he’s gone. He was terribly underrated like the Guess Who are. RIP
I addition to this, the great Joe Bonamassa paid tribute to Myles on his Twitter page saying that he opened for April Wine in the early 90s in NYC and said they were a great band of musicians.
My condolences from the USA. Grew up with April Wine. They are truly a great band that made some of the best rock anthems. Say Hello, Roller, and I Like to Rock are masterpieces that first come to mind. RIP dear sir.
I watched a interview with Myles, and then With Gerry. On the Professor of Rock. About a month ago. Myles, said that he was dealing with diabetes. I've been a fan of April Wine, since 1978, when Roller, in Flint Mi. R.I.P. Myles. And thanks for being a part of my musical family ❤😢
.....VERY cool that Jimmy Rankin paid his respects - with NS (Cape Breton) roots, my late mother & I saw the sisters in Northampton MA quite a few years ago, at Pearl Street (Natalie MacMaster, TOO - her Calvin show) - and they were GREAT.....
I love your mad Hatter. I also really appreciate how you keep promoting April wine. Please don’t stop I realize with the recent death you might run out of content related. But I always get a warm fuzzy when I tune into your channel and you’re talking about April Wine or Miles Goodwin. As an ex from Canada I have been a fan of April Wine since I was a kid in the 70s. Still play them with some level of frequency anyways don’t stop.
It goes , Stand back , Harder Faster then nature . But all others were great too.Rip Myles. When i was 6 id take off up the road from my house in Waverly N.S and listen to them practice. That was 1971 . They played my brothers jr. High. I seen them many times over the years. This truly sucks.! Music of my life.❤
My favourite Canadian band of all time. The Guess Who too. Fortunate to see them a few times. Happy Rockin memories from records to cassettes to cd's to streaming. RiP, thanks for the musical joy you shared❤❤❤
Your the best interviewer, I so appreciate all the great artists you not only interview but get answers to question I would have wanted to ask,. Canadian Rock has its own sound unique to our culture, lead by the most gifted vocalists, stylists and songwriters, thank you for bringing them to us before there gone.
Growing up in Michigan, I was able to hear some releases played on the radio. April Wine is one of my hidden gem bands, myself and friends still crank them when we party. They were cool!! Unfortunately, another loss for rock and roll.
RIP Myles. You made a hell of an impression. You were an integral part of my youth and early adulthood, and going forward a part of my musical collection that is never to be forgotten.
Nice touch John, After you signed off yesterday, I went for a very long walk with my dog and all my April Wine albums on my mp3 player and we didn't return until I listened to them all as a tribute to Myles.
DAMN...great picture with 4 of the guys. Considering you're several years older than me, I'm amazed how young you look in these pics!! You look younger than I did back then, and I was 33 that year!! R.I.P. Myles Goodwyn. 🌹
Saw the band many times, and till this day they were still the only band I would always say... if you were to close your eyes at the their concert, you'd swear you're listening to their studio album. Cheers to being apart of best Canadian era of Music Myles
While I was in high school, around 82 April Wine opened for The Steve Miller Band (Abracadabra) in Detroit, and was shown on CBC Windsor. I don’t know if it went nationwide, but it was a great night for this teenager. We left when Steve Miller started playing. Abracadabra wasn't received well with our circle of friends. "Enough Is Enough" was their last encore
Rip Miles and thanks for the music, Saw them at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver BC Canada in the early 80's... we got there late and AW were already into their show. Drank my face off and had a great time...
RIP Myles. So very sad. Seen them in concert a few times, got the t-shirt, and the albums. Love the music. Just between you and me, I'm gonna rock myself to sleep, thinking about you, thinking about you.
A Great Band I had the Pleasure of Being At Concert with April Wine 3 times , You want Rock and Roll ! you got it ! Always April Wine ! Thank you for all the Great Songs that moved me and All my Friends. R.I.P. Myles Goodwyn .
I wasn't aware of this. April Wine was one of my favorite bands growing up. The first time I heard that train bell in Oowatanite, I had to hear more. I still have a lot of their albums on vinyl as I do with other Canadian bands such as Streetheart and Trooper. Sadly, some of them are now gone as well. Definitely a sign that we are all getting older when the bands and their members that we grew up with are passing away.
The first concert I went to at 13, it was Rush, but the reason I wanted to go to concert was for the opening band, AprilWine, still a fan all these years later
I think I was about ten years old when my older sister and her friends turned me on to April Wine, they have been one of my favorite bands since then, I listen to them now when I want to remember much better times....
Canada's music legends are indeed something we can all be proud of..in my opinion the truly great bands have endured..and the list is a who's who of talent and dedication ..we can go back several decades and find gems on slate..tape..vinyl..c d etc ..and lets not forget those who never were published..Myles Goodwyn always did put finess to his art..my condolences to his relatives..and April Wine members who know him best..God bless ALL musicians whether we understand their product or see it as moot..it comes usually from the heart .Mr Goodwyn..rest in peace..you will be missed truly
Miles grew up just down the road from where I live now.(Wavery Road). Saw him last at their last big concert on the Dartmouth waterfront two Labour Day weekends ago. Outdoors on the waterfront. I think about 8 to 10 thousand people there. Big fireworks display over the harbor going on as well. Good times. Also saw them when they were first starting in the area in Sydney when fast train just came out.
Can't say I was huge April Wine fan, but a great band none the less. So sad to hear of Myles passing, my sincerest condolences to his family and friends for their loss. 🙏
Thanks for sharing this with us. I’m 60, born & raised in BC. Yeah, if someone asks me my favourite 3 bands in the world, I have to ask for 5 or 6, because April Wine, Trooper, & The Guess Who all should make that list. Despite being a fan since I was a kid, I didn’t see them in concert until they played at the River Rock Casino (Richmond) and they were missing 2 members, so, didn’t perform a few of my favourites. Without bias, I can say that they really were one of the best bands & Myles Goodwin wrote some truly impactful “love ballads”. They are, as well, one of only 2 bands who did their own rendition of a Beatles tune and it came out better than the original! That’s the great thing about being a fan of a musical act; search their work on RU-vid & they come alive! (Immortal)
Incredible band that will never get the recognition it truly deserves. Bands/songs were played on the radio literally COUNTLESS times for good reason? Because their song/songs were AMAZING! 🤯 We Never get tiered of listening to them consciously? but sub-consciously? I believe it somehow Degrades their worth in society as a whole? 🤔 I tell ya John I not that long ago watched that old concert of them man from way back? Absolutely blew my mind!?! 🤯 Sounded like straight off the record LIVE with at times THREE! Lead guitarist!?! 😵💫 I seriously had no clue in all my years just how amazing & ahead of their time they were... 100% taken for granted for me at least probably for the reasons above... RIP 😇
