At 1:14:10, the professor did not explain the verses correctly. These verses are in reference to a specific situation not in general. It is referring to the pagan Arabs who used to kill and ambush the Muslims during the holy months. God permitted the Muslims to fight back after the holy months even if they are around the Kaaba and try to kill or ambush you. You need to understand the context and not generalize the meaning out of its specific incident.

Congratulations Dr. Firestone for your academical review on the Islamic faith. Eventhough the part u get is only literal understanding of the Quranic values it is good enud to know there are men of understanding from the other side. I only have 1 tip for your lecture. When u quote a verse in the qur'an, u need to find a hadith for that particular verse to get the whole context of the verse. Tq very much

The story of Moses is the most repeated of all stories that have been mentioned in the Quran. This is because, as Prophet Muhammad has said, the people of his nation would go through many of the hardships and sufferings that the Israelites (بَني إِسرائيل) went through. 1 In other words, they share many parallels and by listening to verses about Moses, Muslims would be able to compare the events that took place at the time of Moses to their own time.

I must slightly disagree, the Quran does not claim any group of people are inherently bad or evil. The Koran criticises actions and behaviours of different groups of people and call them to stop these actions and behaviours and come to what it claims to be God’s way. For example, it talks about the bad behaviours of what it calls people of the book (Jews and Christians) and talks about how they were punished for it. However, it continues by saying they’re not all the same and then start talking about how there are groups amongst them that are great people. The Quran claims to be the words of God, so it is not interested in tribalism, it calls out what it deems bad behaviour wherever it sees it. The Quran is just as critical of Muslims as it is of christians, Jews, idolaters and non-believers. It claims to be the authority of God which can criticise and call all people to God.

The Islamic golden age was the Ummayad in Spain and in Baghdad under the Abbasids who took the Paper printing technology from China after their victory in Talas battle. That technology boosted the Muslims in science and other studies. The Ottomans, however, disallowed the use of the printers because at that time their people was saying that its Haram which caused a decline in science over the time.
@mcsusa75

The ottomans also forced Arabic out of all the lands that didn't historically speak Arabic, for easier control of the masses by interpreting the Quranic scriptures according to their agenda, that's what sent the ummah in comma!!!

The other point, about the editors putting the verses together, is also not true, because these verses, again, referring to a specific incident at that time. Editors don’t decide where verses go in the Quran, God decided. 🙂

It always baffles me, trying to hear about your own religion from a different religion. You hear tons of subjective unrealistic things. It is as if someone is explaining to you how you feel and trying to convince you that this is a true thing and you just don't know about it. The least we can hope for is less subjective point of view. And trust the outcomes more than trusting the so called historical facts.

I fear that this type of wise reflection, of consideration and ability to discern nuance and complexity is lost on our times. Times that are defined by 5 second attention spans, of click-economy and instant gratification along with the need to be as polarizing, reactionary and provocative as possible to be seen above the "crowd" of the internet. People just don´t have the time nor the inclination under such circumstances to benefit from the wisdom and understanding of people like Reuven Firestone.

Abuu Karata Do you like scholars like this? Islam according to its founding prophet Mohammad: Muslim (1:33) - “the Messenger of Allah said: I have been commanded to fight against people till they testify that there is no god but Allah, that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah” Bukhari (52:73) - “Allah’s Apostle said, ‘Know that Paradise is under the shades of swords’.” Bukhari (52:65) - “The Prophet said, ‘He who fights that Allah’s Word, Islam, should be superior, fights in Allah’s Cause’.” Bukhari (52:256) - “The Prophet… was asked whether it was permissible to attack the pagan warriors at night with the probability of exposing their women and children to danger. The Prophet replied, ‘They (i.e. women and children) are from them (i.e. pagans)’.” Bukhari (52:220) - “Allah’s Apostle said… ‘I have been made victorious with terror’” Muslim (31:5918) - “I will fight them until they are like us.” Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 484: - “Allah said, ‘A prophet must slaughter before collecting captives. A slaughtered enemy is driven from the land. Muhammad, you craved the desires of this world, its goods and the ransom captives would bring. But Allah desires killing them to manifest the religion.’” Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 992: - “Fight everyone in the way of Allah and kill those who disbelieve in Allah.” Saifur Rahman, The Sealed Nectar p.227-228 - “Embrace Islam… If you two accept Islam, you will remain in command of your country; but if your refuse my Call, you’ve got to remember that all of your possessions are perishable. My horsemen will appropriate your land, and my Prophethood will assume preponderance over your kingship.” Bukhari (52:177) - “Allah’s Apostle said, ‘The Hour will not be established until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say. O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him’.”

Reuben/Reuven needs to understand that there is no such thing as Aramaic in the Qur’aan. The Qur’an was revealed in Arabic - PERIOD. Allaah, who is Well Acquainted of the nuances and subtleties of all and everything, is sure evidence to that, in that Allaah, explicitly, says in HIS Divine Writ of al-Qur’aan that which is closely translated and means: “...SURELY, WE (Allaah) HAVE BESTOWED IT - FROM ON HIGH - AN ARABIC (lit. a precise) QUR’AAN, FOR YOU-ALL TO HOPE THAT YOU-ALL UNDERSTAND!” [The Grand Qur’aan, (Prophet) Yusuf (Joseph - a name which, literally, means in Arabic, “afflictive” - “one who is in constant sorrow”), 12:2] Anybody dares to disagree with what Allaah (High is HE Above) says concerning al-Qur’aan being revealed in Arabic must be beside his mind. That being said, it must be understood that every letter, and every term/word - be it a noun or a verb - is, clearly, and, purely, Arabic, and no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Why Jews need the Qur'an? According to the Quran, no race and no peoples are ontologically superior to others. Indeed, the Quran (49:11) warns believers against belittling other people groups: “O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them.” So when Jews are criticized or praised in the Quran it is based entirely on their actions, not their race or religion − as is the case with Muslims. For instance, Muslims are criticized for gossiping (24:12) and for abandoning the Quran as a guide (25:30). Even the Prophet Muhammad was criticized for his mistakes, such as when he was criticized for turning away a blind man while preaching Islam to the elites of his society (80:1-10). Although the Quran holds that God has bestowed His favor on the Jews (2:47), it also criticizes Jews for their wrongdoings. So Jews are criticized, but again just for their actions, for killing their prophets (5:70), worshipping other gods (9:30-31), breaking their covenant (2:83), claiming that Heaven is exclusively for the Jews (2:94), slandering God (4:50, 5:64), ridiculing Islam and Muslims (5:57), and being ungrateful to God (45:16-17). But Jews are criticized in their own scriptures −the Hebrew Bible− for similar reasons. In Jeremiah (2; 19; 26-28), for instance, Jews are criticized for breaking their covenant with God, being ungrateful to God, worshipping other gods and killing their sons. The Quran, like the Hebrew Bible, does not claim that all Jews are wrongdoers. Indeed it affirms the righteousness of both Jews and Christians (3:113-115; 3:199; 7:159; 7:168). So while the Quran criticizes some Jews for their unrighteousness, it praises others for their righteousness. In so doing, it makes no blanket claims about all Jews as a people group. Like Muslims, Jews who believe in God and perform good deeds will be rewarded (2:62): “Those who believe, and those who are Jewish, and the Christians, and the Sabeans − any who believe in God and the Last Day, and act righteously − will have their reward with their Lord; they have nothing to fear, nor will they grieve.” Moreover, synagogues and churches, along with mosques, are praised in the Quran, as these are the places where the name of God is much mentioned (22:40). So while the Quran states that Jews who break the covenant, kill messengers and worship other gods are cursed, they are cursed not because of their race but because of their actions. As long as they perform good deeds, God keeps helping the Jews in this world and promises to reward them in the Hereafter. Does the Quran Forbid Muslims from Taking Jews as Friends? While there is a verse (5:51) which seems to imply that Muslims should never take Jews and Christians as friends or allies (Awliya’), the Quran itself explains what kinds of Jews and Christians should not be taken as Awliya’ just six verses later, in the same sura (5:57-58): 51: O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people. 57-58: O you who have believed, take not those who have taken your religion in ridicule and amusement among the ones who were given the Scripture before you nor the disbelievers as allies. And fear Allah, if you should [truly] be believers. And when you call to prayer, they take it in ridicule and amusement. That is because they are a people who do not use reason. So the Quran does not preclude friendships with all Jews and Christians, just those who ridicule God and religion. Indeed, as evidence of the deep friendships that Muslims are allowed with Christians and Jews, the same sura (5:5) gives Muslims permission to marry both Christians and Jews. If the Quran did not allow Muslims to make any Christian or Jewish friends, how could they marry them? Finally, and recalling the divisive and tribal ways of Quranic times, Muslims can make Jewish and Christian friends who are not hostile towards Muslims, wage war against Muslims, or expel Muslims from their countries (60:1, 60:8-9). Worldly Punishments for Jews’ Wrongdoings? Even supposing the Muslim anti-Semitic attackers in France rightly believed that the Jews they attacked were unrighteous, the Quran does not give Muslims permission to punish them. On the contrary, in the Quran (5:13) Prophet Muhammad is commanded to forgive wrongdoers and to tolerate them: So for their breaking of the covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hard. They distort words from their [proper] usages and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded. And you will still observe deceit among them, except a few of them. But pardon them and overlook [their misdeeds]. Indeed, Allah loves the doers of good. God, according to the Quran (45:16-17), will judge their actions: 16: And We did certainly give the Children of Israel the Scripture and judgment and prophethood, and We provided them with good things and preferred them over the worlds. 17: And We gave them clear proofs of the matter [of religion]. And they did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ. Of course, the Quran permits fighting Jewish enemies if they wage war against Muslims or help those who wage war against Muslims. Yet, these verses are not restricted to Jews. The Quran allows Muslims to defend themselves against all attackers regardless of their beliefs (22:39): Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. But Muslims are not allowed to wage war against a group just because that group believes in another religion. Muslims are allowed to fight only if they are attacked. What matters, again, are the actions of the “other” not their identity. This is only answering some of the questions that was asked and an idea how A Muslim think......thanks for a good video and interest in Islam....actually this Qur'an is for all of us if anything just for knowledge

I am sorry but the Rabbi was not honest when he talked about the supposedly most violent verse in the Quran. I would have said maybe he did not know the full context, but when he read part of the verse in Arabic I knew he must have read the entire context but choose not to mention it because he knows it is not really violent at all. Unfortunately, he wanted to lump the Quran with the clear violent verses mostly in the Old Testament. The context of that supposedly most violent verse in the Quran is as follows: The pagan Arabs prosecuted the new Muslims who Also Arabs from the same tribes as the pagan Arabs. They many of them, they tortured many of them with some dying during torture. They kicked them out outside Mecca and placed an embargo on them for three years and some of them died from starvation including the wife of the prophet Kadejah who was 15 years older than the prophet peace be upon him. Some of the Muslims ran to modern day Ethiopia to escape death. Then, the decided to kill the rest of them including the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. So, they fled to Madina and prophet Muhammad peace be upon him escaped death by a few hours. Representatives form the various tribes came to his home to kill him so no specific tribe can be blamed for his death because prophet Muhammad’s tribe was the most powerful at the time among all tribes. However, most of his tribal relatives were against him except for few because the new religion he brought demands the destruction of all their idles which meant the death of their economy as they were relying on all tribes of Arabia to come and worship their gods at the Kabbah, which meant business. Even after they fled to Madina, they went after them. They raided their homes, they raided their caravans and stealing their goods and that kept going for years. Finally, most tribes in Arabia united and created an army of 10,000 to attack Madina and Kill all Muslims including prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. The only thing the Muslims were able to do is build a huge trench around the city from 3 sides. A war never took place because a violent wind destroyed the pagan’s army. Their horses and camels ran from them, most of what they brought with them was destroyed like food, tents, etc. Because of that, the pagan army retreated from the battle. Only after all of this has happened, ALLAH told the Muslims in clear verses in the Quran that ALLAH has granted you permission to fight them back and to protect your property and society. The Quran specifically mentions in the verses that follow the verse the Rabbi mentioned that you are fighting them because you were unjustly attached and so the war was a defensive war and not offensive war. In spite of all the years of prosecution, the Quran still instructs the Muslims to give help the pagans to a place of safety when they seek refuge with Muslims and stop fighting them. Even when prophet Muhammad peace be upon him conquered Makkah, the inhabits of the Makkah were afraid he will retaliate for all what they did to Muslims for many years. Prophet Muhammad asked them, what do you think I will be doing with you. The responded a generous brother and the son of a generous brother. The prophet responded; go you are all free. This is the context that our Rabbi failed to mention. Not only that, but he also failed to mention that Muslims are the ones who saved the Jews from complete inhalation at the hands of Christians and if it was not for Muslims your religion would have disappeared. Moses Ben Maimon who is considered the second Moses who saved Judaism from disappearing. He only was able to do that under Islamic rule under which he not only had full freedom and support to do his work, but he also reached high positions in authority. And by the way, the Jews and Christians are considered people of the book (people who received revelations from ALLAH), but these verses that Rabbi is talking about were about pagan Arabs..

The real problem with religion is the Temple Mount. While I like Sufi Islam and Reform Judaism the best; Sufis consider the interjections denoting importance of comments, like: cutting off their opposing limbs as metaphors... It is used as an interjection; not a command. The Turkish Sufis blocked the Eastern gate and built the Palace on the Temple Mount. Daniel 11:45... See Nahum 2:6 The gates of the rivers shall be open and the palace dissolved. Song of Songs 4:12 A garden inclosed, (Garden of Edin/Eden) a spring shut up(II Chronicles 32:3, 32:30 Hebrews only have one Chronicles), a fountain sealed. ( Lower water course of the Gihon) Amos 9:11 All countries shall worship in the New Temple. Isn't it convenient that the Hebrew, Christian and Muslim religions worship on separate days? The Quran requires that Israel can not exist as a separate state. Amos 9: 14... Perhaps it can also be called Judah; or something that Muslims can tolerate... Daniel 7:13-18 states that A king from the line of David will be King Dan. 2:44... Perhaps that Emperor's maternal grandmother was Jewish. Zech. 13:1, Zech. 14:4-8 ... There is room to leave the Al Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock can be rebuilt on the Mount of offense... It IS beautiful architecture; but is where it doesn't belong... Muslims and Hebrews should both have access to the Temple Mount, and Christians too: if they can refrain from carved images... The Quran states that not all "People of the Book" are Hypocrites... Isn't it about time for Christianity to recognise the right of Muslims to worship God as they see fit? The problem with Christianity are the books of Paul; who didn't even Know Yeshua. They seem to have a connection to the Universalist Church of Rome for all gods. The Universalist Church of Rome existed before Yeshua/Jesus. 1 Timothy 4:1-5 Forbidding to marry and commanding to abstain from meats, which God created to be received with thanksgiving. There is a mistaken belief that the AntiChrist will rebuild the third Temple. If the Muslim and Christian People are truly Holy; they will not block the rebuilding of the Temple; but assist in the construction... This will allow the end of the separate state of Israel. The Quran does NOT avocate genociding Hebrews; but states that not all of the People of the book are hypocrites... Not all Christians are Hypocrites either... I've met a moderate amount who are legitimate. Please read the "Tablets of ENKI" "The Emerald Tablets of Thoth" and check out www.hinduwisdom.info/Vimanas.htm Then we can chat about what happened before the Old Testimate. There were actually two Gardens: The Garden of Edin, buried by the deluge, and the Garden of Eden of which King Solomon was able to descend down into... Peace to all Holy Hebrews, Holy Muslims, Holy Christians and "The other Sheep..."

At 1:21:43 Reuven Firestone clearly states he thinks the Qur'an was edited which is a huge error on his behalf, one that no academic research or publication has demonstrated or evidenced. This is very interesting, as the Qur'an points out itself that had it been from other than God - i.e. it would have required human editing - it would have been full of errors. It also challenges those who doubt it's miracle of language to produce similar to it. To date, no-one, least of all Prof. Firestone, has met this open challenge!

Just remember y'all.... There is only one religion that Allah sent to the entire universe not just this planet. This religion spelled out in the Quran as Islam. All other perceived as "other religions" are simply called " Millas" thus the Jews are a Milla and so is the Christians....etc. Plus the Milla of Mohamed's followers who are called in the Quran as " Al Mua'minoon" and those Mua'minoon have their own 5 Pillars of Iman which is wrongly called the 5 pillars of Islam.

I agree, only one religion of the 3 can be true. My take is not very complicated: Moses peace be upon him and the Torah was specific to the Jews. So, whatever legislations Moses brought with him was specific to the Jews. Even, the religion is called the Judaism. So, it's not for all humanity, but to a specific group. Jesus peace be upon home him and the Gospel was also specific to the Jews. So, whatever new legislations if any Jesus brought with him was specific to the Jews. Even, the religion is called Christianity in reference to Christ. So, it's not for all humanity, but to a specific group. Muhammad peace be upon him and the Quran was not specific to the Arabs. The Quran itself declares it that it is for all humanity. So, the legislations brought by the Quran is universal and not specific to the Arabs. The religion itself is not racially biased and so it does not carry the name Arabism or Muhammadan religion. It is called Islam and this name is also specified in the Quran. Islam simply means submitting your will to the will of ALLAH (the creator), which is the same name Arab Jews and Arab Christians have been using before prophet Muhammad peace be upon him existed. Besides the theological and historical evidence, the practical evidence that Islam is a universal religion and the true religion of ALLAH is, unlike Jews and Christians, most Muslims are not Arabs. The Torah and the Gospel were only applicable to those Jews and Christians living back then and specific to their time and place. They are not suited to all humanity, and they are not suited for all times and all places. That is why preserving them was not needed. This is also why you have separation of Church and State, and you see many Jews and Christians are either atheists or hardly practicing their religion.

G-d gave a portion of the Holy Land to the children of Ishmael. Based on Zohar Shemot 32A ------ [R. Hiyya then says] Woe is to the time that Ishmael was born into the world and was circumcised. What did G‑d do [to appease Ishmael]? He distanced the children of Ishmael from supernal cleaving and gave them [only] a portion below in the Holy Land on account of their circumcision. And in the future, the children of Ishmael are destined to rule over the Holy Land for a long time when it is empty from anything, like their circumcision which is empty and imperfect. And they will prevent the children of Israel from returning to their place until the reward for the merit of the children of Ishmael reaches completion. The children of Ishmael [i.e. the Arab nations] will cause great wars in the world and the children of Edom will gather against them and wage war against them, one on the sea, one on the dry land, and one near Jerusalem. And they [the children of Edom] will rule over them [the children of Ishmael], but the Holy Land will not be given over to the children of Edom. [The children of Edom is the Christian West, for Edom is Rome (see Num. 24:19, Rashi) and Rome signifies Greece-Rome and the Roman Catholic Church, the foundations of Western Civilization] -------------- It had already been prophesied in the Bible that the descendants of Ishmael/Arabs shall administer the Temple Mount/Jerusalem. Isaiah 60:7 "All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered together unto thee, the rams of Nebaioth shall minister unto thee: they shall come up with acceptance on mine altar, and I will glorify the house of my glory." Kedar is the second son of Ishmael, and founder of the tribe that bore his name (Genesis 25:13). Many Arabs trace their lineage back through Ishmael to Abraham. All the flocks of Kedar - On the word 'Kedar,' see the notes at Isaiah 21:16. The Kedarenians were a wandering tribe that frequently changed their residence, though it is probable they usually dwelt in the south part of Arabia Desert, or the north of Arabia Petraea. They are mentioned as dwelling in beautiful tents Sol 1:5 : 'I am black, but comely as the tents of Kedar,' see Psalm 120:5; compare Isaiah 21:16-17; Isaiah 42:11. The language here also means that that which constituted their principal wealth would come and enrich Jerusalem. The rams of Nebaioth - Nebaioth was also a son of Ishmael Genesis 25:13; 1 Chronicles 1:29, and was the father of the Nabatheans. They were a people of Arabia Petraea, and lived principally by plunder, trade, and the keeping of flocks. The country of Nabathea extended, it is supposed, from the Euphrates to the Red Sea, and embraced Petra, the capital of Arabia Deserts, and also Medaba. It is not possible, however, to fix the exact boundaries of the various tribes of Arabians. The general idea is, that their most valuable possessions would be devoted to God. Dome of the Rock is the Third Temple. There are some interpretations of the Bible that suggest that the construction of the Dome of the Rock is prophesied in the Book of Daniel. Specifically, some people believe that Daniel 12:11 is a prophecy about the building of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. "And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days." [Daniel 12:11] It is a heresy/unholy to think that Jews shall administer Temple Mount/Jerusalem as it had been clear in the Holy scripture that descendants of Ishmael/Arabs had been ordained by G-d to administer Jerusalem/Temple Mount. -----------

Jews can't get past the idea that God choses to test obedience not because of lineage alone . Your lineage is not the Sole factor of being chosen ...This is precisely why the message of Islam that began with Adam ,Noah ....& Many Hebrew prophets was finally given to more obedient people ( Your Arab brothers ) .. Not because they were Arabs but God knew that the final Message of the Oneness of the Creator will be obeyed & respected & propagated to the whole world by these insignificant Desert Arabians . Deuteronomy 18:15 The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must listen to him!!!!

Roosje Kezer, people speak Arabic in North Africa because the Berber people where and are culturally and politically oppressed by the Arab speakers.

You may love the teaching of this man, but I’m afraid he is not a messengers of the truth. In fact, Prof. R. Firestone, is heretical and his teaching is misleading people away from the truth, by teaching that the God of Israel is just like any other god, while the God of Israel say that He alone is God and there is no other like Him. You do not need to bring The God Almighty to such a low level, in order to befriend the Muslims. And the True Living God of Israel, is never the god of Islam. Speaking the truth is love, not hate….

It is you who's bringing God down to a low level with your compounded ignorance. The God of Israel is the God of everyone. He doesn't belong to one race or one tribe. Not that we need their validation or acceptance. But have a look back at what the greatest rabbi scholars in history admit about Islam and how we worship the one true God. You sound like a Christian. If this is the case. This makes your post even more laughable. As you would be a Pagan man worshipper who in fact believes God is a man. We Muslims, don't need your friendship, validation or acceptance. Go and educate yourself and open a book.

The concept of G-d in judiasm and islam is the same. Unlike christianity who believes in the Greco-roman/egyptian trinity which is middle and neo-platonism (pagan) muslims and jews worship the same G-d! Unlike christianity no vicarious atonement in judiasm and islam. In fact according to the Halacha law jews are allowed to pray in a mosque b/c muslims worship the G-d of Abraham. However jews are forbidden to even enter a church let alone pray in it as it's seen as a house of idol worship. Before you criticize the noble professor you need to read, you really need it Girl.
