😁YOU GUYS ASKED FOR IT- here is a list of some of my MUST HAVE furniture flipping tools and products, some NICE TO HAVE tools and products, and some things WORTH SAVING FOR.
These are just things that I use- every refinisher/flipper is going to have different preferences, and different availability in their area, but I'm hoping this will be a jumping off point for anyone interested in furniture that is just starting out. Obviously this isn't a list of every single item I use- but if you want to see more tools and products I use, you can check out my workroom tour videos- I actually open every single drawer and cupboard!
Grab a snack and a drink (and probably a pen and notepad) and hopefully you enjoy this video I made for you! ❤️

I noticed this video isn't getting as many views as your flipping videos. I hope you don't let that discourage you from posting content like this occasionally! Your subscribers appreciate you sharing your expertise

Yeah. These videos always perform horrifically in comparison, so I try to spread them out as much as possible. Some channels skip them all together but I know that there are a few folks that could really use this sort of info, so I do them on occasion. The main issue is that a lot of my subscribers don’t actually do furniture themselves, but like watching the process, so a video about products/tools, etc just won’t apply to them, which is totally ok! It was actually the reason I created my other channel, that caters more to folks who actually do or want to do furniture. This would have been perfect for that channel, but because it was a sponsored one, had to do it here instead. Thank you for commenting though; likes, comments and shares do help videos get seen more so I appreciate it! ❤️

I have been watching keenly at the prepping stages and finishing of other videos, but this list was so helpful. I can source some of the products at my locL hardware in my small regional town! Great info, Angie! I am a little bit handy, and have over the years accumulated a lot of tools. I surprise myself at times - "I really bought that?" as I look in some corner or forgotten box. Having and using are very different, so it's excellent having your videos as encouragement and reference. My late Dad was very handy, and as a chemist who specialized in paints and coatings he made a lot of wonderful and useful things when I was growing up, and left a storehouse of tools and memories. I truly appreciate your going through what you use and why! Ive been using Wooster brushes for years as I work for a Benjamin Moore Dealer and have access to their Wooster brush full line( plus I live about an hour away from Wooster, Ohio), so its easy for me to get brushes. Having recently purchased alot of the must haves that youve shown makes me feel better about justifying my motives to purchase. It'll be awhile before I can get a festool system, but I'm good with duct tape and my wet dry vac! Lol Thank you for sharing your list as there are things I didnt even think of that will now get my attention. Love your videos and how you share your experiences, both good and bad! Daddy had Weldwood glue powder. The stuff was amazing and I can't find it anywhere. I'm surprised you don't have pipe clamps. They fit on a pipe of any length and can be used to hold large pieces together or apart. I've used them more while working on my old house. I got a chuckle when I asked a Home Depot salesman where they were. He tried to send me to plumbing. I got him to tell me where regular clamps were. He followed me over. They were hidden at the bottom of the display and I taught him how wonderful they are. While I have restored furniture for my own use and am restoring my old home, I love watching and learning from you. Maybe one day the house will be done, the old shed will be repaired (hurricane) and I can start flipping pieces.

I looked up the etymology of the word salve. They all have pronounced LS. "Old English sealfe (noun), sealfian (verb), of Germanic origin; related to Dutch zalf and German Salbe ." So we US citizens are pronouncing it wrong. 😁

I actually use many of the same products you use. This is due to watching your videos and your exceptional explanations of the tools and products. I believe this also a byproduct of your learning experience with skillshare and other platforms. You probably subconsciously describe techniques in a way you have seen through the skillshare videos. I can definitely see the quality of your explanations getting better overtime. There are a few other channels that I watch and I would say that Mad City Modern is my second favorite, but I would caution people to not use his techniques for flipping, because his finishing style does not hold up overtime. Definitely use the finishing techniques used here if you want returning customers. I see a need to use toners, but I am still not confident with them. A tutorial video from you would be a great help. I haven’t been able to find any good videos regarding toners for the flipping use case. I have researched many of the techniques you use and I can honestly say that there isn’t much that you don’t do the right way. The only process you use that caused problems for me is using normal wood glue for veneer. I got a lot of bleed through. Switching to a proper veneer glue fixed that for me.

My favorite mini ratchet/driver is made by VIM tools. High tooth count, quality ratchet mechansims, with a 1/4" end that fits 1/4" hex shaft driver bits, and a 5/16" end that holds a 1/4" socket adapter. I had one for 10 years or more, that was HD house branded, but found the one they sell now is not as good. Found the VIM tools one on Amazon. One "must have" that doesn't get much thought is... a place to work. I don't have a garage, only a car port; but it is covered and I had an electrician install an outside power point so I can use things like sanders and saws in the covered part. I also have a very large shed in the back garden - but that's going to need repairs to a leaky tin roof and better (safer) electrical wiring. On very cold days, on very hot days, on windy days, on rainy days - having somewhere dedicated to work is essential; I've refinished furniture in my kitchen and lounge, and that's not really all that much fun.

Looking for a couple video recommendations for working with OAK. Did a search of "transcend furniture oak" but no luck. Starting my first project ever with an oak Child Craft crib approx 30+ years old. Bought it used for my own babies and passing it on to my daughter. Stored in an attic, then a basement... needs some TLC and updating. Daughter is hoping for a grey/beige type of finish or something light and muted.

I am based in the U.K.Iunderstand a lot of things you “need” do not even exist in my country. We have our own makes. The one thing I cannot find an equivalent for is Odies lit etc. do you know if they ship to the U.K. Paint etc. we have loads to choose from and I live near where Farrow and Ball is made. So other stuff I’m ok with but please let me know if you can think of any way I can get Odies.

I’ve ask before with no response. ( I know you can’t answer everyone) How many sanding pads do you go through on a project? Like a typical dresser that you might paint/stain.
@TranscendFurnitureGallery
@TranscendFurnitureGallery Год назад
I can't give you an exact answer to this, it varies greatly by piece. Thickness of current finish, am I scraping or stripping at all?, how big is it, how fine a sanding does it require etc. Far too many variables to give you an accurate answer. Thanks so much for watching!

One thing I need to know more about is chemical strippers. I have no intention of being a professional, but I often restore thrifted furniture. I usually scrape the ruined finishes, but some pieces have intricate details. Citristrip works okay, but it sometimes tints the wood. The "environmentally safe" options that the hardware stores near me carry don't really work. In desperation I have even tried oven cleaner, but it actually blackened the wood. Any suggestions?
@TranscendFurnitureGallery
@TranscendFurnitureGallery Год назад
I tend to use Circa 1950. I completely agree on the Citristrip - I don't use it because it stains the wood and that defeats the whole purpose! Hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching!

I am really enjoying this video. It is very clear and informative. I have a lot of the items, but you introduced new items. I also like how you related each item to a different step in furniture restoration. My problem is that I seem to have a knack of picking up furniture and now I don't have space in my garage to work. It is also difficult to find the time, but I am determined to get started.Thanks for all the tips and pointers.

I'd like to add something in Shop Safety Equipment- a metal trash can for rags or shop cloths that have been used with solvents or finishes. They can spontaneously combust, and my dad found this out by chance one night. Someone has left some finishing rags on a wooden bench, and he came upon it smoldering. Could have been a disaster. Shop rags go in a metal bin with lid!

The Bondo brand is a pain to use, especially when sanding. For about the same price, or sometimes cheaper, you can find professional putty at Napa or any store of this kind. I know many use Evercoat for cars. I never tried it, but enjoyed the one from Napa, can't remember the name :)

They are just floor mats! I bought three of them, at about $15 each from Princess Auto (similar to Harbour Freight in the US). They are rubber backed so they don’t move around, and are wide enough that they go a few inches up the sides as well.

So I'm wondering if someone can answer a question. I recently started my first refinishing project and got water based paint at Lowes here in the US (It was Magnolia Homes brand as they didn't have any others. I keep saying Joana Gaines redid my kitchen set). I did see some chalk paint options but I'm not sure how that differs from the water based paint I got and mineral paint.

As I don't use that brand of paint, your best bet is to do your own research online regarding the paints themselves and their makeups. Thank you for watching!
