How's the distortion on the 8-18? I feel like there would be some fisheye effect no? I got the tokina 11-20 for that reason, but i'm curious what youer experience is.
JacksMagicBean there is some distortion obviously when your shoot 8mm. Looks pretty cool! A problem for me is when I use stabilization at 8mm - the edges get reeeeally weird and wobbly..
TBH I tested the Sigma 18-35 with a metabones and my feeling was -- it's too damn heavy and the difference between 18 and 35 was simply insufficient to do what I really wanted with a zoom lens, which is to punch in on a shot to provide a cut point in edit. This may be heresy for folks who love this lens but--I did not. I actually ended up with the Olympus 12-40 for my run and gun. But as for my favorite--the Olympus 40-150 is absolutely magnificent. Long reach so I can get intimate with my documentary subjects without making them feel like I'm all up in their business, beautiful bokeh (you can get bokeh without a super fast lens, folks). It's honestly my go to for almost anything except an interview or flying on a gimbal. Then I've got two fast Sigma primes, the 16 and the 30. Typically I shoot indoor interviews on one of those, opened up.

My favorite lense for the GH5 is the Olympus 25 1.2. Amazing, crisp, buttery shots. Great Bokeh. The only downside is that 25mm is a bit too zoomed for most of my video applications. I think my next lens will be something a bit wider, yet still 1.2 or close to it.
@@rasmussmedstrup-lumixambas1546 Might also want to check out CrumplePop Echo Remover 2. I believe it's about a $100 tool but has helped my videos a lot since I have tall ceilings. Even with close mic placement, echo still comes through without it. Just thought I'd share
So even if you buy the camera it will not work without a lense?? I have the gh5 ii and the screen shows up as purplish like a ton of light coming in. I’ve never had a camera like this so I’m completely new to this.
Great stuff, thank you so much! I agree with the lens choice and am at the "other end" of my career and still going in my mid 60s after 40 years producing. So, I am interested to know how you approach finishing and delivering, which editing apps (film and photo) you employ, your impressions of them and any plug-ins you find useful. It appears you shoot for the edit very well. Very impressed! THank you for these RU-vid sessions. ~Richie
Hey Rich, Thanks a lot for you comment. Super exciting that you've been shooting all your life. Really cool man! I would love to talk about those things in another video! :)
Hi good day, I'm looking for a lens recommendations for my GH5, I've started shooting and lot of events at church and sometimes I'm so far away like 75-100ft away from the stage but I need a lens that can still get me a nice mid-shot or close up shot from 100ft away, I was looking at the panasonic 35-100, olympus 75mm, or Rokinon 85mm, or any other suggestions you may have. Can you make a recommendation please?
I’m rocking the Sigma 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm! I’ve owned the 18-35mm, the 42.5mm F1.2, and the 25mm F1.4. I liked them, but the look between lenses was to inconsistent. So I had to switch to a set that matched. I absolutely love the Sigma Primes!
You better change your metabones speedbooster to viltrox m2 ii. WIth latest firmware of speedbooster and calibrated sigma 18-35 there is no AF problems
Hi, sorry if the question is answer below but when looking up this lease there are many by different bands like canon nikon ect and the price is very different all 1.8 is there any difference? thanks in advance
I wanted to get your advise on filming,,gh5 ,,,I have the cannon 70-200mm,, the EF 16-35mm, Lumix 35-100mm, SLR Magic 8mm f/4.0 Ultra Wide Angle Lens and Xeen 24 mm rokinon so if you were shooting videos or a movie how would you use them?
I love the Olympus 12-40mm. It’s more robust compared to Panasonic. The optional manual focus and fast auto focus sold me. Sucks that it doesn’t have image stabilization. I switch between photography, filmmaking and events, so it’s a happy medium.
I actually also own this lens and for a long time I regretted that I bought it. But the last couple of months I've actually started to appreciate it! So I completely agree with you! :-)
It's interesting to see his opinion on it in the video because I just watched several videos raving about it and saying it's better than the Lumix 12-35... Largely because of the mechanical focus with hard stops. I think I'm going to get one.
Hello new friend, I am new to photography (with a low income) I’ve recently purchased the GH5 and love it. I’m waiting for a LUMIX 12 to 35 F2.8 mark 2 as my main go-to lens for video and hopefully at almost $1K AUD for this Pro lens it will be okay for photography too. Thank you for producing this video so I can learn from your experience. Cheers #iSpike
Nice video. I own a couple of those lenses myself. Just wondering if you pair say the sigma and the Leica 42.5mm on one shoot and get consistent results in terms of colour and feeling. Thanks
Good question! No, you will not get completely consistent results. But to my experience I’ve always been able to fix it in post with just a few adjustments.
I’m using the Sigma 18-35 lens with a viltrox adapter, it was a manual infinity focus and it was pretty cheap on Amazon. Around $80. I’m curious how much of a difference can the Viltrox EF-M2II auto-focus 0.71x speed booster make compared to that one. The reason I’m asking is because my adapter developed stranded fogginess and dark patterns in the frame during certain settings. Edit: more specifically the fogginess is more developed more when there’s nothing in range to be focused on. If that makes sense? The dark patterns may be the vignette but it’s just so oddly placed over all the camera and not necessarily in the corners
Based on this video, I decided to get a Sigma 18-35 for my GH5! However, I'm a bit confused. When I go to attach it, my GH5 says my camera is set for 35mm focal length, and asks me if I want to change it. What do you do in this situation? Thank you! ☺️
@@rasmussmedstrup-lumixambas1546 @Rasmus Smedstrup - Lumix Ambassador After a long internal debate I finally pulled trigger on the Sony A7IV - seemed like a good hybrid
Hey Sasha. That is a good question. Nothing is actually wrong with the autofocus. It's just different from other cameras and not as well developed yet. It is a contrast-based autofocus system that is pretty new compared to other systems. I agree that it's not as good as the other systems on Canon and Sony for example, but I hope that firmware updates and new technology will fix this soon! :-) When all this is said I would always recommend you to learn to shoot with manual focus when shooting video ;-)
@@rasmussmedstrup-lumixambas1546 thank u for answer! I'm not good in formulation. Actually, I always shoot with manual focus :) but few days ago, my friend asked me about tracking autofocus on my camera.. And I was like "hmm how it works". Maybe you have a special video about this? Like your channel
I’m considering switching from canon 6D Mark 2 to the GH5 line. This video was very helpful. I do 60/40 photo/video so I would probably go with the 8-18 and 42.5 if I had to choose only two lenses thanks for the video Subbed!
Hey man. Sounds like at good idea! Is it possible for you to keep your 6D for photography and then use the GH5 for video? Would really recommend the Sigma 18-35 for video! :)
@@rasmussmedstrup-lumixambas1546 Best thing about the Laowa 10mm is that it has electronic connection which helps avoid warpiness and optimizes IBIS for video (thank you Camera Conspiracies). Unreal for pictures too. Hyperprime is another great video lens that for me captures some magical photography as well.
ZJ HK good question. I have not used any lens support and it hasn’t hurt the mount. So I wouldn’t say that it’s necessary. But when I carry my camera I always think about how heavy the lens is.
Fedt, Rasmus. Anyways! Tak for endnu en god video. Bruger du btw. Final Cut Pro X til redigering eller Premiere, Davinci Resolve eller noget fjerde? (Undskyld lang kommentar, ha!, og at den blev på dansk. English next time). Dbh. Keyvan
I have been using a set of rokinon cine prime lenses and they are really great for the price, but after 3 years I am wanting something a bit sharper. I've gotten really accoustomed to all of my lenses having the same filter size though, so it'll be a bummer to not be able to use the same nd filter for everything.
Makes sense! Have you thought of buying these: www.amazon.com/XCSOURCE-Stepping-Adapter-49-82mm-DC147/dp/B008H430NU With these you only need one large ND filter and then you can screw these adapter rings onto your lenses. That’s what I do :-)
Sweet lens collection. Was wondering since you mentioned you don't use the 12-40mm Oly much if you would be interested in selling it? Well, that's assuming you still have it haha
Great video! Very helpful :) Would you reccomend an MFT cine lens OR a metabones adapter + canon EF cine lens? Finding it difficult to find out what the pros / cons would be.. Thanks!
To be honest I would say that there is not really a right answer to your question. You will have great results with a speedbooster and canon lenses but also great results with MFT lenses. Personally I always like when I don't need a speedbooster, but the lens options are not that many... A speedbooster would give you more options. MFT lenses are probably lighter in weight and you may have some auto focus possibilities, but since you want cine lenses I guess you shoot all manual anyway? And then weight is not really a problem either :-)
I'm torn between the new Panny Leica 10-25mm (there's a decent used one price in my area) and the Sigma 18-35mm w/ Viltrox speedbooster (also some good used deals in my area). The Sigma combo is cheaper, but the native lens can also work for photography.
Thanks for all the helpful information man! I'm just starting my channel and this will bring it to the next level! Very cool editing and content. Liked and subscribed!
Thanks a lot for the review, I am trying to build my equipment for shooting mostly corporative/informative videos and also scenes with a gimble and this video was so much help!
I don't know his reference, but I have the newer 12 - 60 Leica DG Vario-Elmarit with power IOS and f2.8 - 4. The stabilization and sharpness are wonderful. Only downside is relative to this conversation is that it's f2.8 on the open aperture rather than the Sigma's f1.8 but it has more total zoom range on both wide and zoomed ends.
Wow that Panny 10-25mm is quite the price. I'm looking for another lens as only have the leica 15mm, would you guys suggest the leica 12-60mm or the sigma as the next purchase?
@@adamburges4807 I would suggest the Sigma 18-35 because of the extra lowlight possibilities and also shallower depth of field. But if larger focal length is more important than lowlight possibilities then you should probably go for the 12-60 :-)
I like this Panasonic 10-25. The first lens I bought for my gh5 was the Panasonic Leica 12-60 2.8-4.0 and I loved the results. I needed something with a more open aperture and the 10-25 seems perfect. It just might be worth the price.
