This is a very useful lesson. I would suggest that instead of using the typical yt infomercial-sounding hyperbole in the titles - "amazing" or "must-know" - "useful" would be fine. Your reputation is intact, we're here because the lessons are good, useful, helpful, and that's all you need.
Your knowledge of voicings, phrasing, motifs, and just music in general is phenomenal. I am a pianist/composer really trying to improve my soloing. My biggest struggle is deciding whose teaching I want to run with, as I have wasted a lot of money over the past 30 years on literally hundreds of various books on technique, theory,harmony, etc., only benefiting from a handful. So far yours has been the most helpful in terms of immediate application and realistic usability IMHO. Thank you for your generosity!

A fantastic lesson, also in terms of teaching methodology. You give solutions like mathematical formulas which I love. You keep putting new challenges in front of me. I am not a professional pianist, although I have been playing since I was a child. After the age of 55, when I did my "life tasks", I study jazz harmonies every day and lately I have been playing in hotels and restaurants. Just experimenting with this 'diatonic' approach on My Foolish Heart and it really opens up so many possibilities and creates more fluidity. It gives you more scope and control of the keyboard. Thanks again Noah!
Some nice sounds - reminiscent of 'locked hands' technique. Puts me in mind of Hoagy Carmichael. Wondering, though, if I wanted to thin out the voicings, what might be a good approach?
Amazing video! When you're moving diatonic voicings up and down a scale, what scale are you using over the Bb7 b9? Also I struggle to figure out what scale to play over minor ii-V's for the right hand. Do you use the melodic minor a minor third above the root (i.e. C melodic minor over A half diminished). Same with the dominant chord. Appreciate the help in advance!
Hey Noah, I love your videos but I need guidance and I've been struggling. I'm new to jazz on piano and I love neo soul. I'm good at playing on guitar and I understand concepts. But I can't physically play anything jazzy on the piano. I've watched a lot of your videos and you show many things but idk how or where to start with voicings and major 7 or neo soul chords confidentially. Is there any exersize you recommend as a beginner to start with neojazz chords and voicings? Any help is greatly appreciated 🙂, Austin
Hi Noah, So when we use diatonic chordal voicing triads in a song, we are not thinking of extensions or alterations, but just the chords of the scale with inversions of triads being determined by the notes of the song at the top? Am I getting that right?
Yes that's right. It harmonises the melody (the note at the top) with diatonic chordal voicings. I think he was right to also talk about inversions in the same video, as another technique that you can mix it with, because in my opinion diatonic voicings cannot always work (you have to use your ears). Especially on the first beat of a chord you want to emphasise the actual chord, and an inversion will achieve that (since you're playing the chord, not some extra notes). but then within a chord using diatonic chordal voicings is great (or other voicings that are not triads, as he mentioned, as long as it sounds good). But I think there are points where you want to highlight the harmony, and be more restricted to the chord. That's why mixing is always good.
Hey ! Something I still find confusing is the left hand ! How do you choose how to change notes ? Im not sure how this happens and I tend to play by linking both of them haha as you play it feels like you just randomly change basenote. I guess there is a lot of 2-5-1 but I dont always see it so..
Boy that transcriber is annoying and misleading. Like it displays a F Sharp in the E flat minor chord which obviously should be a g flat. I guess it's because the visual transcriber references the key of C. Can you change that so it spells the voicing correctly?
