I love the lungs detail. Because yes you would absolutely get a lot of misses. Hell the deathtoll must have been staggering, because most of the mutants would have just died due to organ failure.

I like to imagine that we had a half-gasmask or re-breather that was broken in a fight then atomstorm.

If I was in this situation. My comment about humans inevitable extinction would probably be something like this. From the future conquerors of the stars. And rulers of the earth. To basically becoming the next Neanderthals. I wonder what scientists will call the next stage of the mutated humanity. Maybe homo mutanus? If humans were to remain in any sense. It would be at most be Maybe a small Bank of human DNA? And some residual genes that are regarded as useless.
