In 1628 the great flagship of the Dutch East India Company, the Batavia set sail on her maiden voyage to the Spice Islands of the Far East. Mutiny, murder, sexual slavery, outstanding seamanship, revenge and historical firsts are all part of this amazing true story that makes the Bounty Mutiny look like a fairy-tale.

I'm Dutch and like the presentation. This story deserves a movie. Unbelievable story and it teaches also about human behaviour in dire situations.

I'm surprised Hollywood has not made a movie or series about this ship wreck..

"you haven't passed out have you? Damn, I thought I had one". Love it. I remember a guy at school fainting during a first aid lecture when the lecturer was talking about blood. There was an excellent documentary shown on British TV about the Batavia years ago.

No one _knew_ that Lucretia was _having an affair with Paelcart._ It was simply ship gossip, and nothing more. Gossip was one of the biggest pastimes on the ship. She was a happily married woman on the way to see her husband. Just bc she tended to the man in his cabin doesnt mean, and strikes me as highly unlikely (given what is known of her character) that she did.

Of all the main characters involved in the Batavia story, the one that dissappeared to history was Lucretia Jans. I hope one day someone discovers what became of her after she returned to Amsterdam

He got some information seriously wrong. For example, tge pastor's famiky was NOT in the hospital tent when patients were murdered. Rather the pastor's had been invited to dine with Cornelisz, and while hexwas there mutineets, on Cornelisz orders, went to the family tent and murdered the family. Also, the oldest daughter was not "given" by the pastor to Huyssen: rather, huyysen demanded her and the family, including the daughter, agreed she would go... under the pretext that he'd later marry her when rescued. I stopped listening... HOW can anyone not do proper research??

Yeah that kinda got to me too... like this poor guy has all but one of his family butchered (and as Mike Dash's book point out, having so many kids survive to adulthood those days was ridiculously lucky), all after coming to the horrible decision with his daughter to "marry" one sadistic murderer rather than be gangraped by dozens. If Dash's book is accurate than portraying him as pimping out his last child to save himself is highly disrespectful.

Well possibly Cochrane. Take a look at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eHF3-jeEuFU.html

You mean the cruelty in this story?because I can flood this comment section with endless example.
@MrDogfish83

@@juzores1 I made that comment a while ago but no, I think I’m talking about the epicness of the story (which includes the cruelty aspect). I mean it has a everything-a journey across the planet, a mutiny, a shipwreck, a marooning/struggle just for survival, another power struggle, a virtually impossible quest to get help, a final struggle, and trials over the ordeal…oh and that’s not mentioning the manipulation and murders

Turns my blood cold to think about this story. And about what people will do to save their own skins. Today’s society could use some examples of what it is to be “broken on the wheel “
