Suppressor all day every day. No question about it. Sure, the muzzle brake reduces recoil a little better than a suppressor. But the large increase in noise negates all of that and then some. A suppressor makes the rifle WAY more pleasant to shoot than a muzzle brake ever will.

In Canada suppressors are prohibited - give the gov. long enough and they will ban muzzle brakes too... unless they get away with banning all firearms completely before that time comes.

I have never met someone that owns a suppressor that prefers shooting without it, so take that for what it is worth. Weight and handibility (is that a word) in the backcountry or horse saddle scabbard are reasons not to use one probably, but for everyday shooting, silencers are a very nice commodity.
@gsitzkowitz
@gsitzkowitz 3 месяца назад
Well now you've met one! I only use suppressors when night hunting for varmints. Where I hunt the "ranches" are about a thousand acres. During the day you hear gun fire all the time. At night people are trying to sleep. I don't care for the length or the weight as I'm an old guy. With ear protection and a muzzle break for my 7 mag I good. In fact my 7 is such a pleasure to shoot with its break I keep a piece of temperature tape on the barrel so I don't overheat it during long shooting sessions. One thing people refuse to realize is AR's shooting supers are not hearing safe with a suppressor. Bolt guns are borderline but only with smaller cartridges.

They both have their pros and cons. For a hunting rifle, I’ve settled on not dealing with either. No extra noise or length. Find a cartridge with a recoil level you can handle.
@jcarry5214
@jcarry5214 3 месяца назад
You're not wrong, but being able to handle it for one shot and being able to practice year round for western hunts are not the same thing. When I'm hunting I don't feel the recoil and the report is almost nonexistent. Go out to the desert and repeat the excercise 20-30 times and I feel very differently, I become very aware that I've had several concussions.

A muzzle brake will always have a greater effect on the felt recoil of a rifle but it comes with a lot of downsides. A suppressor has a more balanced approach and more upsides at the downside of more weight and higher cost.

Flinching is a product of recoil not noise. I have suppressors but I never shoot any supersonic centerfires without ear protection. If you have to wear ear protection I just don't see the point of a suppressor except for night hunting where you might disturb your neighbors.

Muzzle breaks… If you need a muzzle break to cut your recoil, try a smaller caliber, in the 6 or 6.5 families! They’ll drop most any game that’s not in the DG group! It’s all about bullet choice and shot placement; then again, it’s always about those two things!
@GreatLakesLogger
@GreatLakesLogger 2 месяца назад
You aren't gonna be spotting your trace and probably most of your impacts even with a 6.5. No, the recoil isn't unmanageable, but it's enough to move that sight picture out of the scope. I personally believe being able to negate the recoil with muzzle brake and weight, in addition to proper technique, is the best thing possible for a new shooter. Shooting a gun that's balanced and well setup that allows you to focus on your squeeze and follow through makes a huge difference on your progress.
@GreatLakesLogger
@GreatLakesLogger 2 месяца назад
And btw, you'll find a lot of people running muzzle brakes on 223's. It's obviously not because a 223 kicks enough to mess you up, it's because we want to be able to follow through and spot our hits anywhere from 50 yards to 1k yards
