JJP = the most open & honest engineer out there today. No attitude just willing to share what he knows & does. He presents in a way that doesn't make you feel stupid and doesn't just say buy my plugin bundle.....best MWTM's Q&A so far.
love how he doesn't give platitudes and actually gives in-depth answers, i've watched a lot of these q & a's and this is one of the few where the answers have real actual takeaways that can applied 🙏
Wow! This is, by far, the most helpful Q&A in the series. As others have said, JJP addresses and articulates relevant and critical concepts in an engaging and accessible manner. His style of communication, along with his philosophy and approach to making records, is among the most genuine, effective and enlightening I have ever encountered in my quest for self-improvement in the world of recorded music. Many thanks to JJP for his insights and to the people that made this content freely available!
He is a great teacher who really cares about the students in this class. He tailors the lessons to each student as he does the music to the artist. I am speaking from personal experience. Beg, steal or borrow to get over to France to see JJP - unforgettable.
I got to meet JJP in Nashville many years ago when he was doing a lot of CCM. I was in that world too mainly as a musician. He was very real. I could listen to him talk about this stuff for hours on end. CLA is great too. But, the way JJP talks about all the thought processes and things beyond the technicality of mixing, ensnares me every time. Mixing is a philosophy not just a mechanical process. Great stuff.
Wow that was really insightful! This is the best Q and A ever! JJP is probably the most open of the top engineers in the world! Great advice for all of us! ;)
JJP, I have known about you since the 70's ever since you were the first call engineer in CCM. I just acquired the JJP Collection from Waves, and just to put it to the test, I went back in to some of my old mixes and applied your plugin's. Oh my goodness, I wish I could reprint all of that stuff with your plugin's applied!!! Your videos teach me more than any other series I have watched! Thank you for sharing your expertise, and God Bless You!!!!
This guy's philosophy on compression is dead-on. The #1 album in my iTunes Library as far as number of listens is Spilt Milk by Jellyfish. I'm not even that big a fan of the band, but the mix is incredible--every time I play through a song yet another subtle element steps forward that I'd not heard in prior listens. JJP delivered the fat vintage mojo that 70's retro power-pop band needed to get across--without getting too muddy and losing those incredible details. The credibility this man has as an engineer and teacher is off-the-charts, IMHO.
cool! I got something outa this. surprisingly better at explaining than others. thank you. if I was to go to mixing with the masters for a week, in France, I would choose this guy.
Think of compressors as outboard gear. Not as a plugin. Think of the EQ as the preamp. You would run the compressor into the preamp first. Then use the preamp to adjust it a little bit and run into the console/DAW.
11 The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" (1 Kings 19) -- What you said about the small voice inside --
