The MXR '78 Distortion Pedal is a great pedal to get any type of tones from Blues to Classic and Modern Rock. If you're looking for a pedal that can cover a lot of ground without a really prominent mid hump, this is a great choice. It sounds great on a clean amplifier and it would also sound great stacking another pedal before it to get your solo tones.

we had one of these stacked in to a monte allums modded ds-1 and the tone was awesome. good demo shane...oh the pedal is loud from what i remember

What I like about this pedal is the lack of runaway distortion overtones, its a clean distortion pedal, in other words it's not picking up every accidental finger bump on adjacent strings or pick noise, I find I can use less hand muting as only the notes I picked ring out clear and distinct (I hope that makes sense). My lead solos sound much better with this than other higher gain pedals.

I'm late to checking out this pedal, but what I love is that it's not an amp in a box. Maybe it's supposed to be but at every setting you played it at I could still hear FENDER tone. to me it does seem to have the slight tone of a steel string singer SRVish vibe in there but that could also be your pickups so idk. What I do know is that I'm putting this pedal on my board tonight if I can find it in town!

For those like me who were looking to see how close it gets the ds1 keeley mod. I bought both, i can tell you they are almost identical.

I dig it. I like the Super badasss distortion as well. It has an active 3 band eq so you can boost or cut low/mid/high

It’s a seeing eye keeley mode when in normal operation, and ultra mode with that little button pushed in.

I'm looking at the ocd and the 78 would you suggest 1 over the other or something else. I play blues and rockabilly mostly and there's just so many pedals out there

Definitely for Guns and Blizzard/Diary era Ozzy. I gig with this pedal and enjoy it very much. Really love it when a Tubescreamer is pushing it.

You wont get anywhere near that sound without the pickups he has on his tele. They're Joe Barden and they're almost $500 for a a set. The tone is worth the cost but just wanted to say you don't get tone like that from standard pickups.

You could get by with a slightly cheaper tube amp (like an AC15 or a Hot Rod, something around that price range) but the pickups are so important. I've been going through a few of my guitars (just 2-3, really) and these modern, medium price-range guitars seem to have badly mismatched pups. So far the keepers are my Gretsch Streamliner and Fender MIM Player's Strat. The losers - Schecter (Duncan Design), Epiphone (idk, stock), Alvarez (Duncan Design again). Gotta get some decent pups in a couple of those and flog one. Bought a set of 57/62 Strat reissues from Fender. Gonna go in a Partscaster I'm working on. Fingers crossed. We have to teach the young 'uns how to wind pups or Rock will die!

Don't agree with that. I've had a set of these Bardens and took them back out. Put in Fender (slightly overwound) single coils and can still get that tone...;

I just bought this thinking It was a little heavier. I messed up. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Looks like the heaviest it gets is acdc.

Yeah If you want heavy metal you might want to look at Wampler Triple Wreck or Mesa Throttle Box.

Yep. And the crunch button just turns on the Keeley mod for the DS-1 when LEDs are used instead of conventional diodes. It gives a lil' bit more fuzz character.

In my opinion the bad thing about this pedal is that it sounds too much like an overdrive, so I would rather replace it for a Tube Screamer and use another pedal for heavier, crunchier sounds
