My $4000 Bug Out/INCH Bag Setup

At long last, two years after my original bug out bag video, we're gonna take a look and see what is inside my current INCH bag. After doing a rough calculation of everything in the video, the price in today's market came up to around $3800+. Definitely an investment but this bag is leaps and bounds more capable than the one from my previous video.
Look, I get it. "The more you know, the less you need." We've all heard that before but the fact of the matter is that we're not all the Gray Bearded Green Beret. And even if we were, surviving indefinitely in -20° temperatures requires more than a 20lb bug out bag. That's why I've allowed this bag to be as heavy as it is (around 60 or 70lbs wet). It's not meant to be easy to carry; it's meant to keep you alive when you don't have a home to go to anymore. Of course I could spend more money to get lighter gear, but I'm faaaaaar from wealthy. I've spent enough for now.
One thing you might be thinking is how am I going to carry this in the winter with snow on the ground? My intention is to get a sled.
What about the cart? There will be a video about that soon enough. I will say that on flat ground and moving down hill, I'm probably saving a TON of calories vs carrying the bag. Uphill is a different story.
As always, this kit is a work in progress and is bound to be adjusted here and there.

Here are all of the links for the items I have in my bag. Not everything is listed below (such as the snares) because they’re either not available anymore or because they’re something simple that you probably have lying around. Also, if I was unable to find the EXACT product that is in my pack, then I linked something similar. On occasion I also listed a product that I just thought was a significantly superior version of what I had in my pack. Whatever does not fit in my description will be in a pinned comment down below. I have these listed ROUGHLY by order of appearance or mention.

I myself knew because I looked it up before and we have adapted it for even our own shit like if coproaches are looking for me and I need to dodge those thieves for a spell and go play hide and seek, to if shit is got to plan and all hell breaks and we have no home to return to we will use it in our communication process... Being an OTR truck driver, I like the idea of the cart. I rarely go further than 500 miles away from home. At “hopefully” 20 miles a day it would take me almost a month to get home.

I decided to buy the Savotta Large and pack it with 35lbs of esentials, which is always on my back. And have a cart with non essentials, in the cart, and that way I am more balanced and hills are easier. Also I can abandon the cart-if necessary and not have to lug 75 lbs on my back. Also you could have a mule or a goat, haul the extra weight. They can eat brush to stay alive.

There's a thing called Hiking Trailers that are slowly catching on. Basically a rickshaw for your gear, with the handles that attach to a specialized belt. They're still rather pricey, but it wouldn't be difficult to convert a deer cart into a hiking trailer.

I would like to give you my own suggestions About the sawyer filters: They are rated for up to 100,000 gallons of water filtration, but do keep in mind, they can wear out long before they reach 100,000 gallons. Some customers state that they can start to leak later, and when you can blow through the sawyer filters, theyre done for. But since they are some of the best on the market and my #1 go to filters for my own INCH bag, I like to keep about 5 in my pack if were talking about INCH bags, and making sure I can live to 80 if SHTF since they can kind of stack and store neatly. I also wrap mine in some gorilla tape to have some on-hand and att some durability to them to prevent breakage. For the sleeping bag: I would recommend one made with a nylon exterior if you do decide on changing it out since yours ripped easily from the zipper. I would add a sewing kit and some extra cordura fabric too if you need to patch anything. Also, I have a Savotta Jaakari XL as my INCH bag too, so if you havent already, i would wrap the frame in something like an ace bandage or something to kind of pad it, it really is a total lifesaver for comfort even with just 2 layers wrapped around the whole external frame. Especially wrapping the tops of the external frame will save your head incase you fall or have to shift your weight abruptly and the frame shifts and slugs you in the head. If hunting, I would find a way to modify the pack to where you can create a meat shelf between the frame and the pack to hold maybe an elk quarter if needed. Everything in your pack is scary-similar to mine, and for the past hour ive been just taking notes. Definitely one of the best INCH bag videos I've ever seen.

Tools, trump gear. If you have a saw,axe, brace, and knife, you can live comfortably anywere, far off any trail. Dig a dakota firehole under a tree and sever any roots nearby. The tree will disperse the smoke and the hole will contain the light,but still impart warmth. You can boil the roots you cut and render the salt. You can tap the tree for water. You can eat locusts and worms for food. Build a wiki up or lean to for shelter. Forget a rifle, you are never to be an agressor. Its too heavy and sois the ammo. Carry a handgun for defense, and craft a bow. Set snares for beaver and other herbivores, and avoid eating carnivores. Use a net for fishing. Humans are amazing, if you simply use your imagination.
@panpiper
@panpiper 2 года назад
Disagree about ditching the rifle. Your number one threat in a real TEOTWAWKI situation, is human thieves who will have zero qualms about killing you for your gear. Your only defense against them is either 'never' being seen, or seen to be able to fight back. Your rifle is your life.

With the mission being not ever going back, part of that suggests being out in a blizzard. I am not sure how your blizzards compare to mine but I do know that cold camping sucks. A small hot tent and folding wood stove shouldn't really weigh any more than the Bunker and be much more versatile.
@TheTroublemakersGuild
@TheTroublemakersGuild 2 года назад
You're probably right. The main factor for that is cost as both a wood stove and hot tent are both expensive if you get one that's both durable and light weight. Just about all of the light weight wood burning stones I've seen are made from stuff like titanium, which from my research seems to not last very long when it comes to stoves or anything that requires a lot of heat. That being said I'll keep looking in to it and will probably make that adjustment in the future. After all I get that's one of those things where once I try using a hot tent, I'll never go back to a normal tent
@turtlewolfpack6061
@turtlewolfpack6061 2 года назад
@@TheTroublemakersGuild even the less expensive poly hot tents aren't too bad for durability, I mean long term I would imagine you intend to build a static shelter. There are stoves out of Russian that aren't super expensive as well, I also prefer steel and there are many steel options available that add little weight over titanium.
@TheTroublemakersGuild
@TheTroublemakersGuild 2 года назад
@@turtlewolfpack6061 I'll have to look into it some more. There's a bunch of summer homes in my bugout location so assuming SHTF happens when they're unoccupied, that's my first goal regarding long term shelter. Guess it really depends on what happens and how bad it is. If that doesn't work out then yeah, we'll build something more sustainable

Great setup, just one concern. I know it’s not a true INCH situation, but train as you fight. Opening scenes, traveling to close together on an open established trail. Tent camping in an open space with fair sized open fire. Both in a true INCH case could get you raided or worse.

Nice! INCH bags are probably the hardest to build. I agree with the point you make at the top, "the more you know, the less you need" thing. It's not always that simple. Like to save weight, you leave your breakdown, folding, takedown survival bow because you know how to make a bow and you're good at flintknapping. Sure, if it was me, I would have the tools to make that stuff, but I would rather have something like a Spyder XL on hand. Building and using an INCH bag does require a good set of bushcraft skills to go with it. However, there are some things I think you are better off buying and bringing, instead of trying to make as you go. Things like a bow or arrow heads, a spear head, fish hooks, snare wire or even steel shot for slingshots. All of these have a bushcraft alternative to them, but to buy or make is up to you. I do like your setup. I think the bunker tent is a great choice.

Loved that question! It looks like the wheels are height adjustable, I'm not knowledgeable enough to guess what works, but maybe experiment with changing the front and back wheel heights for uphill and also just a quick system to pull your pack off to carry it and then haul the almost empty cart up the hill? Maybe split into 2 bags, 1 you can grab and run with the 'most important ' + 1 backup/ nice to have bag on the cart?

With a cart or with out a cart their may become a time that you have to dump gear and ghost. For a time like that you should put together a small chest bag, with like the min essentials. I use a tactical “fanny pack”. Inside I have a don’t die in the woods emergency shelter, fire kit, cordage,trail mix,boo boo kit,water tabs, some chem lights ,fishing kit ,whiskey wipes(love those bad boys)and a compressed Poland spring water Bottle(ATM no fire arms beings I’m in NJ, but they aren’t far). I would suggest knives for you since you don’t carry any and a light source.I carry a light,knife, and multi tool on my person, part of my edc. Again this is just so when you drop your main gear , at least you have some gear you can hold out with and or get to another location with more gear.

Definitely. I can always remove stuff from the bag or ditch it entirely if need be (something many people in the comment section don't seem to understand). If you have to get out and cannot get back you usually have to move fast and inconspicuous. This isn't exactly possible with this. No matter how much you carry and you carry a LOT, if you don't have the experience, more so if you've never use the tools you carry, then it's all just an overweight, that you'll either leave behind, or slow you down at best, in case of emergency, which that's what an inch bag is supposed to be. If you're not trolling, then you have it all wrong! It's the experience and the knowledge,, NOT the tool. That has come, from our greediness as humans. We buy way more than we need, to feed our ego, which becomes bigger day by day. Start selling some stuff, and help a poor family, while trying to learn how to use your main tools. That's the right way son. God bless
@TheTroublemakersGuild
@TheTroublemakersGuild 2 года назад
Of course you gotta get experience with your kit. However when SHTF, like you said, you can always get rid of what you don't need. You can't add the stuff you wish you had. Fundamentally, you and everyone else who says "the more you know the less you bring" are correct. However we're talking about losing everything you've ever had and only being able to keep what you can carry or push. This isn't a bug out bag. This is all you have for the foreseeable future. Not to mention that most of the people who criticize the size of the bag (not necessarily you but still, most) more than likely live in more temperate environment than CO. The sleep system takes up a huge portion of the bag as well as a huge cost. If you're expecting -20° temperatures, you need more than a tarp and a reflective blanket. Of course having a big bag like this will slow me down, but the idea is to get out Dodge as far as possible with a VEHICLE, and then resort to the cart or carrying the pack as a last ditch effort. Once a Basecamp of sorts has been established, much of this gear can be left in camp while a consolidated kit can be utilized for recce, scavenging, defense or whatever. Not trying to get in an argument or anything but I do use the gear and I learn more and become more proficient all the time. This whole video was recorded during a trip where I put the gear to the test.

Just looking for inspiration for anything I could’ve missed, but you need some form of primitive weapon. A bow & arrow, slingshot, or a blowgun. Your ammunition will deplete at some point no matter how much you conserve it. I would use the primitive weapons as my primaries and the firearms as emergency use only for dealing with threats of the bipedal variety. I’m waiting on funds to get a bow myself. And if you get a blowgun get a 625. caliber blowgun by Cold Steel/SlockMaster. Bow draw strength of at least 45 pounds. A wool blanket is a must have! It keeps you warm even if it’s damp and it’s fire retardant. So if you are in a sleeping bag that’s made out of nylon with a small fire throw the wool blanket on it to protect it. I don’t know how I did it but I have a whole lot more in my kit but yet my pack isn’t nearly as large as yours. Also if you have to ditch the main pack, have the pack lid be your quick ditch bag with the bare essentials for survival in it and some small form of shelter like a basha tarp. Instead of having such a massive weight on your back spread the weight around. Get a HPG kit bag it sits on your chest and it’s compatible with pretty much all back packs. It’s also a great way to carry your pistol. It will counter balance the load on your back. Also if it’s just you going alone I would suggest a TCOP by Eureka. It’s a single person tent that’s all season. It’s only 8 pounds. Cuts off the weight of that gargantuan 3 person tent. I’d say that tent is a tad excessive. Do have any form of rain gear at all? You’re gonna need it. Take some seeds along with you, it takes no room and it weighs nothing.

I do own a bow but I can't imagine a realistic scenario where I'll blow through a combined 373 rounds of 9mm, 5.56 and .22 before I myself get taken out lol. It's certainly possible but if that does happen then perhaps it's my time to go. Bows require a lot of maintenence for the strings and slingshots will wear out quickly too. Guns and ammo will run out but it will be a while. I will have a group with me when i go. The Bunker fits me, my girlfriend and all of our gear and weighs the same as or less than that Eureka tent. I've also seen some Eureka tents that have an added feature of being a swimming pool after all the condensation that builds up throughout the night. I've had 0 condensation in the snugpak. Keeping all the essential stuff at the top is I great idea but unfortunately the top pouch is not removable on this backpack from what I can tell. At least not quickly. I carry my ammo on a plate carrier so a chest rig won't work for me unfortunately. Wool blankets are great and maybe I'll get another one eventually. I took my original one out because its heavy and doesn't make up very small. Seeds are a great idea. Might look into that for sure!

A bow and arrows are big and bulky. Moreover arrows and arrow heads break, so they are of limited duration, especially when compared to all that bulk. Blowguns do minimal damage and are of practical use only if poisoned IMO. A slingshot however is compact and ammunition never runs out. Spare bands do not take up much space or weight. That is definitely the route I would go for saving ammo. Another added benefit of course is that they make little noise.

If your bugging out a tent is definitely a horrible option to easy to be seen . Tarps and hammocks are the way to go ,hammocks are multi use . Also Colorado has cats etc you need a kit that can move on the fly fast the cart is a no go because you have to pull it or push it . That slows you down
@panpiper

If a cat is stalking you, I'd venture that running is the worst thing you could do. You are NOT going to outrun a cat and it will be more than happy to accept the gift of your back. You'd be better off tossing your morning kindling onto your embers, putting your back to the fire and wait for it, rifle in hand. Unless it is legit starving, it will back off.

So I see this mistake alot this set up would make an excellent bug out bag but it misses the mark a bit when it comes to an i.n.c.h. bag. A bug out bag is meant to sustain you from point a to point b or sustain you for a short period of time (3 months or less) an inch bag is meant for you to permanently establish yourself somewhere else. An inch bag should be incredibly tool heavy, an axe, saw, auger, shovel chisel etc. Long term food procurement traps and snares fishing gear. Building materials I've know plenty to carry a box of 3inch heavy duty nails. Mainly you want tools or gear that is hard to replicate in the bush that allow you to harvest and manipulate the natural resources you have available to you

I don't want to be too critical of the video and his efforts. I agree with your statements. If one is truly never coming home you would need much more than camping/hiking equipment. Real tools such as gardening implements, cast iron cooking vessels-dutch ovens, fry pans. Full size saws and axes for wood processing. As you mentioned, augers and other carpentry staples. Heirloom seeds and an abundance of salt and sugar for food preservation is also necessary for any long term existence. I would consider a .22 rifle, a 12 gauge shotgun, and plenty enough ammo for each to last for many years. I enjoyed watching the video. However, I feel these things are not realistic to a "forever" situation.

Id advise you to already find a spot where you think its safe to make your nest and put all of the stuff youl need only in the real survival modus there.
