The 140 kilometer ride in preperation for the 180 kilometer ride on June 15th brought some good news and some bad news.
The good news first;
I kept a well paced-out tempo almost throughout the entire ride, and I kept it on the flat side of things. No climbing except one longer, shallow one and one very short one. I did the same round twice, starting 9am in the morning. I was prepared.
I was mostly worried about energy and tanking out at some point, which I have done before and I remember the 2021 90km ride with horror. I read up on nutrition and did my best with gels, oat meal, protein bars and coconut milk. It totally worked out so well in the end. I had absolutely no problems. Very pleased.
What I didn't count for was the fact that my muscles had no intention of continuing on past 110 kilometers. Between the 100km benchmark (which I reached in the middle of a roundabout) and the stop I did at ca 110km I had to give a bit of effort due to increasing headwind. By the time I reached about 120km my body was aching. My shoulders were aching, my back was aching and I had an ever increasing pain in the right side of my right knee for the rest of the ride. Not good. The knee gives me most worries at the moment.
