@@undeadpriest best decision I ever made was to get my Elvui how I wanted it and then export the string to a notepad doc on my computer. Took a 5 year break, imported my UI when I came back from that string and it was up and running in maybe 5 minutes.
@@ekuda lol are you really being an elitist about not using WoW addons? Blizzard isnt the be all and end all of design. There are some incredible addons literally created by PLAYERS just like me, you, and Asmon, who saw a design opportunity that Blizzard didn't, that improved the gameplay experience for thousands, in some cases tens or even hundreds of thousands of players. Blizzard even later incorporated aspects of addons into their own patches and expansions. To renounce all addons would be to renounce any and all innovation to the UI and Gameplay over the years. But hey, I guess even the Dark Ages had its fans. 🤷 Don't get me wrong, I wasn't so reliant on them I'd use them to COMPLETELY modify the game into something different, but as a Shaman there were definitely a few things I found incredibly useful, like totem bars & timers. Sure, I think too many addons can take away from the actual game, but to act like using any makes you somehow a lesser player than someone who doesn't is just ridiculous.
His friend coming up to him and asking if he was okay and saying it was a fixable issue and it was going to be okay was very wholesome, that’s usually the best and only way to help someone on the spectrum through a difficult change.
fuck bethesda, i have been trying to get around to modding skyrim again, but just don't have the heart to spend 100 hours only for another update to ruin it all
The question that we all asked ourselves: Do I want to test all the mods I want one by one for many ours to be completely sure there's no crash or do I YOLO drop them all in hoping the game won't brick 20 hours later.
Being visually impaired, these addons are essential for me to be able to play the game and enjoy it to a comparable level as someone without vision loss. Having issues with addons (even minute visual changes, having to update/reconfig after a new parch) is thoroughly frustrating. My heart is with Asmon's sensibilities on this. "I just wanna play the way I did days earlier. "
@@Calx9 Being angered or extremely resistant to change CAN be a symptom of autism doesn't mean it definitively is. I'd say normal would spend 2 minutes going " oh there was a change" and moving on. Asmon made a 30 minute video on it. That's not normal, and there is nothing wrong with either response imo.
He was complaining about addons... that help control other addons. That has got to be the most convoluted nonsense system. Addons in WoW need to be completely reset. It's gotten just as bloated as the actual game lol.
If all your spells are in a big block at the bottom of your screen, it's as far from vanilla as it gets. Vanilla is max 2 long action bars sitting on top of one long action bar surrounded by eagles, and 2 action bars along the right of your screen if you wish. Anything else isn't vanilla lol
I love how most of the time ppl complaining about addons have an addon for literally everything. Since wotlk i mostly have dbm and a dmg meter thats it. Login and play ez
Did he get his stuff back because there is no reason the developers can't recompense a 10 year players stuff back when they already knew exactly what he had
Says the classic andy with like 1 high pop server filled with mostly bots, retail is rent free bcz ur sick of doing 1 raid for the next year on classic 🤣
Sometimes i wish back but this game is not fun if you don't play it with your friends, and tbh most people now is too obsessed with games like overwatch 😢 RIP WOW 💔
Because everyone who plays retail are in the new zone right now. Why would anyone waste there time on this old man yelling at clouds because there is no silver dragon or some shit lmao. I'm 35 btw so older than Asmon or the same age. And throught my time playing wow I've learned to back up my UI before any major update. Takes like 5 seconds. I got no idea why he's not doing that if his precious Ui is so important to him.
In FFXIV you can upload your UI settings, Game settings & Charakter settings to their server and download it any time to any PC you need. All with a few clicks build into the game and free of charge. It's 2023 guys
I can sort of relate to this. In SWTOR I had my interface setup perfectly, after years of fine tuning it, and then I came back one day and all my UI settings had completely vanished. It was a bit frustrating as I won't ever get it perfectly back to what it was before, considering I borrowed a save of the UI from an online site. It's just a pain in the ass to set it up all again, that it really destroyed my desire to give the game another chance.
Totally feel that, this happens every time to me when they push a UI update (there’s been a lot in the last 2 years like persistent map overlay, etc). It’s two text files that get created when you back up UI and keybinds - incase something happens, throw them in your google drive or whatever and keep them handy if you’re still playing! Best of luck
I feel that. Fuck that update where they give you a giant area map taking up most the screen instead of the old circle minimap. Now anytime I create a new toon or log into an existing one I have to go into Interface Editor, disable the eyesore map, and re-enable the tiny corner map.
This is my current fucking pain. I reinstalled the game and I'm deciding whether or not to just delete the fuckin game again. UI is all fucked up. Menus are all fucked up. I don't know where the fk anything is, I'm missing abilities I used to have, my bars are fucked up, I can't figure out how to change my gear colors anymore and so much shit is just wrong now. God damnit.
@@GGtheRealest They may have just straight up gotten rid of the ability. They keep dumbing down the game when it comes to classes, and it's kinda sad. Or they unassigned it and you just have to reselect what combat skill to choose.
Yeah it seems to be stored locally. I specifically have a problem with SWTOR because the moment I changed computers I had to do all that shit over again and I was not happy. I think I just half-assed it at that point and then copied and pasted it onto all my old characters. I always check that first when starting a brand new character so I don't have to worry about it anymore.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry watching this video. It's definitely making me reflect on the time I spend playing games and whether it's worth it or not.
It's definitely worth it to reflect, as maybe you'll realize that you didn't need games in your life (or at least as much time spent on them). However, I wouldn't think too terribly hard about it, either. As the saying goes, the time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time. In my case, I have 310 days worth of playtime on my main FFXIV character. If my account were to be deleted and I lost absolutely everything with no way to get it back, I would be understandably upset. Yet, at the same time, I wouldn't regret having spent that time. All of that playtime would be filled with memories and I still would have the friends I made along the way. The same principle goes for all the other games I play as well. All of the games with phenomenal narratives that I've played will stick with me for the rest of my life, and with other games that I spend lots of time on I can appreciate the artistic endeavors that went into its creation.
It's not worth it, and it is. I wasted a lot of my youth playing video games or watching TV or whatever, and still do to a degree. And when i think back on the stuff i "missed out" on, i come to the realisation that i didn't really miss out on anything. I had no friends to go out and hang with, none of my family wanted to hang out with me, no hunting or camping trips or whatever, and i was too young to do most stuff by myself. So really there was nothing to miss out on since there was no opportunity for that stuff to happen in the first place. At least watching TV and playing video games with subtitles introduced me to a large amount of words and increased my vocabulary. Among other things.
if you think about it like that, then basically nothing you do in life matters because it is 90% possible that at some point you're gonna move on from that and never do it again, people hate to just live in the present without thinking about what they did or what they will do
This happened to me once. I spent the entire weekend trying to get it back to original but I ended up with a slightly different UI 😂😂 I feel your pain Asmon.
@@NNggBB True, but I did that for years and even imported my profile onto a new PC and used it for a while. Then, Dragonflight released and and ElvUI broke. I thought "meh whatever give it a bit of time". Updated. Still boolean errors. Posted on their discord. They were like "wtf that is old". Had me try some things. Then confirmed I had to build my UI again. Glad I had a friggin screenshot. I use Shadow & Light for the extra options in ElvUI too. Same UI since Cata, gone. Oof.
@@Caligulove the fact any of you never backed up your WTF folder is amazing. Just update the backup anytime you make a major change and it saves you so much effort
This was sad af and just kept getting worse. I feel for you bro. I quit WoW a few years ago and I can say, my mental/emotional has only gotten better playing other games.
I've felt this pain. To have everything that you loved changed and not for the better. The utter anger and rage in your chest as you frantically go through the settings to try to fix it just have it diminish into a bag of anger and sadness when you find out you cant change it back. We personalized all our settings and ui to the way we want it just to have it be torn down without care. And then people go "Get used to it", "I don't see what your talking about", as if im suppose to be okay with spending hours to change everything back, if possible, and force my muscle memory and game knowledge to change on the spot.
100% the people that defend the ui change haven’t been playing this game as long as we have. They act like they are better because they don’t care about the change.
Not really, he plays a character on stream by acting overly angry at stuff. He probably deleted his addon folder on purpose for content since he knows that isn't required to reinstall the game. When you've watched him for a while you realize when he's being sincere and when he's acting for content.
I feel this to a lesser extent. Every time I come back from taking a break, it takes me a few hours to set up everything properly to play. It's honestly ridiculous.
15:20 - 15:30 You can see Asmon’s face change, you can tell he meant what he said but felt that he overdid it with his change in tone. He did 100% mean what he said about that dude was a nobody, but I think that he felt like he may have crossed a line and then started to explain it as if “well what if you’re wrong” versus the dude just flat out being a nobody like the majority of us are lol 😅
i had this moment when they made eso "new player friendly" by nerfing everything and ruining EVERYTHING build wise. i spent 3 years working on my necromancers build (i worked alot during this time and didnt have much free time to improve) and one day everything was just not working how it should. i moved to ff14 ever since and have been having a better time not only with the community but with game play too. it sucks cuz i played eso since release and i havent been back in a year. i miss the game so much man. ive been playing games since i was 4 years old (im 26 now) and games arent just what they used to be. im really sorry your favorite game isnt what it used to be asmon.
As a person who has been in WoW for as long as you I feel your pain. When you use add-ons for so long and they stop working you get to a point where you don't know how to work without them. I feel your pain, I'm 48 and I really do feel your pain.
@@Zer0Spinn I feel this. Lost all my settings, plugins, samples . It was like I just went through a break up and lost a part of me. And the thought of having to re-configure everything is like.. fuck that. Just the way I feel about starting over with someone else lmao. 'whats ur favourite colour'
Even if you somehow get it to work and set it up again its still not the same. Cause you look at it and you know there are missing things but you can't say what it is that uncomfortable feelings is really annoyning.
That’s why I ended up forcing myself to a minimum amount of addons. Taking long breaks from the game to come back and have to reset up my UI, weak auras, etc was annoying. Quitting permanently helped fix it permanently.
I'm someone who has never used Addons for bars/bags etc etc And I still feel the same way. I have used the Default UI sense day 1. Only real change I make is moving portraits. I spent hours trying to make the Default UI again with the new system but its just not possible.
Just fix them yourself if they are no longer being developed. You got the sources right there. Be self reliant and fix the damn issue instead of moaning because some internet stranger no longer does it for you for free...
i 100% understand what Asmongold is going thru here and agree. Seems like a little thing but when you really care about something the little things matter. i feel for u bro
This is like a mechanic having a toolset that he has relied on for years to do his job walking into his shop one day and having his tools being replaced by dinky or ‘better’ items that actually make his job harder because he has to learn how those new pieces can fit into his needs for the tasks that he has to encounter.
Yep, that had always been my main complain with the way Blizzard handled things. Some of theses changes are way to drastic, that's why I always backup my files, my macros, and addon settings.
When you've devoted so many years to something and all of a sudden everything is changed, you feel disrespected. You have a right to be pissed. That being said, it sure was entertaining watching this.
That and this game is tied to his mother and all the memories he has with her. I feel for him and it is entertaining but this is how I’ve been reacting since bagnon broke the other day lmao
And such is the story about how Asmon learned to RENAME the folders instead of deleting them so that he can revert things that wasn't the cause of the problem.
As someone completely now to asmongold and wow, I thought the video was going to be about him losing his entire account and I was worried. I’m glad that’s not the case. The pain from the UI change is relatable though.
I'm planning to get back to wow but not sure if I have the heart to get used to the new addons I'm going to need to run the game.. Thank you Asmon you made me laugh so much. I feel like your OCD kicking off in this one.. Love it
I can't tell you how many games I've had perfectly good mods or add-ons only then to find out a month or even a few years later it's all gone or changed to an unrecognizable extent. 😢
@@mykeCA82 The endgame is designed around players using addons. Instead of making 15 mechanics on each fight because you know players will use addons that will make 14 of them irrelevant, just make 3-4 visually obvious mechanics and ban addons. Until blizzard competely changes their design philosophy, addons are required to play the game. That's 100% blizzard fault.
This is where him and I are EXACTLY the same. I might even get a little bit more upset when this happens to me but after a couple of times now I've decided to copy the WTF folder onto a portable drive I can use on any of my machines to quickly update most addons to my desired settings. Not always flawless but most of them seem to work by doing like that.
Started playing right before burning crusade launched. I've probably spent more time organizing the friggin mods than raiding. My ui was the only thing I've ever been that ocd about. I totally get what you mean by one is darker than the other and having to download another mod to get a mod to work. Drove me nuts
I've spent hours tweaking UI, I know the feeling of wanting to get everything perfect how you need it. I've had corruptions before or w/e so I would make damn sure to back up the wtf/interface after that. Anyway you get pretty good at hammering out the behaviors and appearances of what you need. WeakAuras is a whole other layer too. Pain in the ass but so worth when it's up and running smooth. I've had a few raid nights where I've had to say "sit me my UI is all fucked up" and had to quickly troubleshoot things.
I used to enjoy spending time config addons like that but after trying other games/mmos, I realized how insanely stupid it is that this game relies on so many addons and that every patch just fucks the game up randomly in someway and you just waste time trying to troubleshoot even though it might not even be your fault. Like people like to shit on Lost Ark but I aboslutely love it, I can just open the game and... play?
@@The_Babe WoW UI is horrible indeed, but on the other side i didn't find another MMORPG during my break that had this much freedom in customization because of the addons.
Yeah coming back to wow each time is a struggle. I run minimal addons for this exact reason. Even the 3 to 5 i use give me a headache. It was great. We had fun .. but time moves on an wow is juat part of the past now for me. It was incredible and i wanted to thank you for making it more enjoyable for all of us.
I remember during wrath, Daily boss mods made a cool help for warlocks for shadow trance. A very cool voice would say “shadow trance” loud and clearly. It was very needed mod for a long time, as it was pretty easy to not know show tranced was active all the way back to classic. Within a month, it was broken.
SAME FEELING when I first loaded in. I've been playing since wrath. Busted up action bars, which I had to try and re align everything to where it was originally. Kept having bars stack over others, and additional special cast buttons pop up on the action bars. Finally got it straight after a good while of working at it.
@@dannymoontattoos i have a near photographic memory and I was an alcoholic after I turned 21 to 26, then stopped that with weed So it probably isn't that
This is why I wait a few days after every major patch to even bother loggin in. Gotta give addon devs some time to update all the stuff. Thanks, addon developers, for all the hard work.
If asmon has regular system restore points he can go to the wow folder or whichever one had the w t f folder and right click for properties and check the previous versions tab. This will allow him to restore old files for that folder.
@@MithDragon if that be the case then file explorer and right click the hard drive and you can find the same previous versions tab. Everything just depends on whether the drive with the game/mods has a system restore point.
As someone who doesn’t play WOW cause I don’t own a pc, I had no idea what was happening this video but was dying lagging because of how mad you were getting 🤣 love the content
he is right, there are moments where change is good and there are moments where it isn't and each moment is individual to yourself, if you literally grew up with how it used to be you wanna keep it like it is, because you've optimized your gameplay with it ..and you gotta add up, all these changes bring minimum benefits, so for a really old player that's been adapted to how wow has always been it's more of a loss than a benefit
I actually feel you even though Ive touched WoW for less than half an hour in my life, but I know what it feels to get taken from just simple things that mean lots to you, specially when they are tied to the most innocent and tranquil years of your life. Stay strong we love your content.
I 100% get this, when my years old TF2 settings got reset i deadass quit the game for like a year because of how uncomfortable it was and how it just didn't feel the same when i tried to get it the same way again
When I watch this and think about all the time I sank into WoW, and ask myself if it was worth it... it truly 'was'. WoW gave me some of the best memories, and I've made friends who still send memes and birthday gifts overseas. But trying to relive those good times, and hope glory days would return just causes pain and sadness. Legion was the last best xpac, I played SL & DF but it felt like spinoffs. I think the next time I'll possibly experience the same joy in an MMO might be Riots (the League of Legends) MMO, which won't be for 3-5 years. P.s Backup WTF, Interface, Addons folder, and after an update, restore it. All the Addon cache, settings, presets etc are stored in the WTF folder. I always backup.
I had to look up the mount's old run animation just to see what he was complaining about. And my god, the new run is SO much better. The old run has him taking fast baby steps that make him look like he's running to the bathroom. Hailstorm Armoredon is the name of the mount if anyone else wanted to look it up.
I only recently started trying the game, so it took me some time to get used to much of the controls. I would say the only real issue I have with the game is the lack of direction. I've played FFXIV for so long I got used to there always being "guideposts" that clued me in to where to go next and which quests to go next. WoW makes me feel like all I can do is "see quest, take quests, complete quest, repeat". Even tho WoW HAS some kind of lore in its universe, I can't honestly tell where it is, it feels like it's just shotgunned all over the place. My brain has been hardwired now to gauge where I'm at and where I'm supposed to go based on story progression, now I feel like I just wander around aimlessly with no goal in mind. Not that I mind that, but that feels like it should be near the end of the game, not the first type of setup I encounter upon playing first time
I got a PTSD flashback from watching this. I had a major issue with my phone backup when I switched phones about a month ago. Had to reinstall and reconfigure everything, including authenticators. Took me 10 hours to set up my new phone.
I swapped to using as much of a vanilla UI as I could about 10 years ago because I could not stand having to remake my UI whenever I'd get a new PC or if something broke and reset my UI. I feel your pain, man.
This. Every time I think about coming back to WoW, only to have to come to the realization that I'm going to have to reinstall and reconfigure all of my add-ons. One of the biggest barriers to restarting for me tbh.
One day you'll log off and you might not even know it's the last time ever. Had so much fun with this game from playing it on my mums brick computer and getting yelled at all day long to raiding mythic in my on flat. It will never be the same and I'm happy I moved on. Happy memories
It's hilarious because when he covered the announcement that they were making these UI changes. He was super happy that some add-ons would be redundent and give new players a better experience to have these tools in vanilla UI. Ah the things we give up to streamline a game.
@@thequestbro I'm not trying to be rude but do you get out a lot? Because when I stopped treating wow like a 9-5 job I realized how awful it was. Dragonflight is just a stripped down Shadowlands with the same renown grinding and mythic spam used to waste your time and keep you subscribed.
how about commissioning someone to make you a custom addon that gives you the functions that you have used for 15 years, all in 1 addon, and the only changes that are to be made aftewards have to be approved by you become the provider of a addon that everyone remembers
I mean idk how he hasn’t encountered this issue sooner lol, I’ve went through so many patches where some addons just stopped working for whatever reason and I needed to find new ones. This is the same energy as when my brother quit after they changed the talent tree system after wrath and wrecked his builds.
All your addon settings are stored in the SavedVariables file which is in the WTF folder in your wow map. They are separate from the Interface > Addons folder so that you don't accidently override them when you install addons. Not sure if he still had access to his old drive but you could've literally just copypasted the SavedVariables and all your addon settings would've carried over.
I still have all my settings in my Dropbox (haven't played seriously in like 8 years). I would even symlink them so I don't even have to worry about uploading them when I make changes.
I haven’t played WoW in years but I remember this pain well. I was good about backing up my folders for my addons so I could copy them to other computers or restore them if needed, but when I quit for a few years and came back and had none of it I was lost. I ended up remaking my UI similar to how I remembered it, but I could never get it quite right and many addons were no longer being supported so I had to find new ones. I could manage with most of that but the worst part for me was losing my keybinds that I had played with for 10+ years. I never could get them to feel right once I came back, and it severely affected my ability to play well. I had maybe half of them exactly how they used to be, but the other half I just couldn’t remember exactly so I just had to guess and then adjust them as I played. Between that and all the class changes that had been made, it was tough to play without getting frustrated constantly. I eventually gave up and just quit all together and I haven’t been back since.
@@noname-gp6hk Not just that, but entire spec overhauls that completely change the way a class is played too. It’s tough to make that transition even if you are playing when it happens, but coming back after years away and it’s even harder. You’d probably be better off just starting fresh as the class and spec so you can level up and learn how the new spec works as you go, but just coming back to it being completely changed is hard. You look up guides or whatever but the vast majority of those are for max level characters so you may not even have all the abilities they’re talking about. It’s just another layer that makes coming back to the game even harder than it already is. It just wasn’t worth the effort to me.
That's exactly how I felt in SWTOR when they changed the inventory UI and removed pretty much half of the active skills from the player classes 🤬 I haven't played for more that a few hours every half year since
I was watching Bellular saying you can grind out 389 gear a couple hours ago and how the game is so much better. I stopped playing months ago and have a better ilvl. I just don't have it to play anymore...been playing since 05. Get gear, to be replaced by higher ilvl, legendaries that are replaced by an expac greens a month later..keep grinding to get higher ilvl to get squished and have to hit the same lvl i did years ago with less numbers and higher ilvl...blah blah, content gets more dull, players get more toxic to play with...same shit different day...time to move on...wow is dead, to me.
Add-ons breaking with new patches isn't exactly a new thing, and it usually takes a week or two before the devs manages to fully update them. But still since Dragonflight made a complete overhaul to WoW's core UI, the add-on devs essentially had to create the add-on from scratch, so there's definitely more problems now. Hopefully this will be fixed overtime once the devs get used to their new written add-on core.
