The old albums and particularly Scott's have a charm about them not ever seen again. I love the covers on them.

I love seeing old albums, I'm lucky enough to still have my first album that was started by my uncle in the 1940s, it was passed down to me when I was around 10, and it started my interest in the hobby way back in the late 70s/early 80s. Great video Ted, as always.

Ted, I had a 1927 edition in excellent condition. Picked it up at a Salvation Army with over 800 stamps. Gave it to a friend to start him out in the hobby. Those old classic albums are amazing.

I have a soft spot for the bound Juniors. It is my understanding that the Junior is the International Volume 1. For some reason when they made the Internationals they didn't use the Brown pages and went with the Junior pages resulting in an album that was less comprehensive but now that we know the company was acquired by the Clarks it makes more sense. This was the pre-digital era after all, so it was probably a lot easier to create pages from scratch than try to edit the Brown pages.

Thanks. I’ve never found a good chronology of the Scott album line, so most of the details are sketchy.

My dad's boyhood album, a Scott International from 1938, was one of the main things that got me so interested in stamps. I was nearly in tears when he gave it to me a few years ago. It's at least twice the size of yours and 90% full. Nothing very valuable, but to me that album could never have a price 🥹 Would you happen to know how a few of those Belgian parcel stamps (one of my favorite categories) came to be postmarked "Jun 18, 1638"? 🤔
@tedtalksstamps
@tedtalksstamps Год назад
The cancellation stamps used by clerks had removable slugs with numbers and letters to spell out dates. They were not keyed to fit only one way, and it was not unusual for clerks to insert them upside down.

Thanks for sharing your album Ted. I bought a ‘38 Junior about a year ago and have really enjoyed having a lick n stick album as it was when I was a kid. I only put in stamps that already have hinge marks and aren’t valuable. My only concern has been tearing perfs since the stamps face each other when closed so I have been adding sheets of paper between the pages but that adds to the thickness. If you go slow and careful I think that can be avoided though. I’m not really too worried about it. Half of my hinges are crooked anyway 😊
@tedtalksstamps
@tedtalksstamps Год назад
I, too, thought about stamps from facing pages getting tangled, but, like you, I will go slow and carefully and deal with it if and when it becomes a problem. Thanks for watching, Brian.

I buy those big albums every other week and then soak all pages one by one, remove the stamps, dry them and sort and catalog them one by one. And when I can t find those big international albums cheap I get a pound or two of international off paper from Mystic stamps and spend my relaxing time sorting them.

Put the light on one side towards the wall to bounce it or wrap the light in vellum to diffuse it. Personally I would put it above and down at an angle above your camera.

Nice album. Lovely to see such an old album in a good condition. It is very fulfilling to fill spaces in such an album. What I do is I put little pieces of papers/labels with catalogue number and year in a Leuchtturm/Lighthouse album as place holders. So with some countries I have an almost empty album and then I buy specific stamps to fill the album. Anyway, nice video again and please keep us updated on the album!
@tedtalksstamps
@tedtalksstamps Год назад
Thanks, Chris. I’ve started using the placeholder method for the sets I store in stockbooks before I make album pages to mount them on. It’s handy to see at a glance which stamps, with catalog numbers, you need without keeping a separate sheet with a checklist. Thanks for watching.

I've my father's Scott 1928 Junior album that he purchase 6-11-30 when he was seven years old . His mother gave him something like $5 to buy it and it was the most expensive purchase he'd made as a child. He was never much of a collector, receiving used stamps his older brother did not want. Nevertheless when he gave it to me when I was seven it sparked my interest. When I got a Harris Statesman album in the late sixties, I moved all of his stamps to that. I didn't collect much until my mid-thirties when I bought the National Album, but after a year, I couldn't justify purchasing stamps when I had a family to begin. Another three decades passed until the lockdown led me to return to stamp collecting whereupon I commissioned the printing of a four-volume album to hold every stamp of the French colonies; no surprise given I'd been a professor of French West African History. Albums even more than the stamps themselves define our collecting. I still have Dad's Junior album. He's 12 years gone, but in his day he was a preeminent physician, and apart of the Greatest generation. To me he was always larger than life, but he claimed there was inside him a child that never grew up. I look at the album and a see a little boy skipping home from Woolworths with it tucked under his arm. Love you, Dad,

Nice to see this. It's interesting that the U.S. section has no stamp illustrations, unlike for the other countries. That's because it was against the law at the time to reproduce images of U.S. stamps. Also, about the "bulging" album--some versions of this album came with expansion strips bound in, which helped reduce that by giving space for the pages to get thicker.
@tedtalksstamps
@tedtalksstamps Год назад
Oh, I think I know what you mean. It’s a very narrow “page” that only extends an inch or so out of the spine. I was wondering why it had that.
@NisargSutaria
@NisargSutaria Год назад
In 1935 was there no mounts? People paste the stamps in the catalog?
@hrhenderson51

No, they used hinges (little folded pieces of gummed glassine-like paper).

Collectors also used another method wherein they placed the stamp inside a butter paper and later hinged it's rear side.

It was among the best ways to keep the stamps undisturbed and organised. I'd once acquired a rare collection like this.
