Oh man, this sucks. My beloved 2014 Toyota (Tesla) Rav4 EV is DEAD! Multiple faults. It wont charge, wont go into sport mode and the code I am getting indicates a possible battery fault. Im very sad about it. Its a great car! Im really hoping it can be fixed by my local Toyota Dealer here in NY.

Toyota told me if I bought one outside of California, I was on my own, so I skipped it after reading about a host of issues they're prone to having. Really cool EV though, hope it gets fixed sooner than later.

My 2012 Rav4 EV's traction motor just went out. So sad, loved this car. The motor has already been replaced once under warranty in 2018 and now that the warranty is over its not worth putting the 8k+ into it. I hope Toyota releases something like this again.

If you save money for the maintenance and replacement, 8K is about 160$ per month over 4 years. I think it is worth.

I just learned my RAV4 EV has the same error code. I plug it in to charge, and you see it go through normal charging LEDs, clicks, and such, but when the wall charger send the 240 volts to the car, it clicks off after a half second. Then it tries 2 more times and then a larger connection click from bottom of RAV4 is heard and it goes into that lock out mode, with the charging malfunction message popped up. It then never tries again until I remove charger and reconnect it. then the same attempts described above take place. this really sucks because I just bought the car a few months ago, and immediately I had the battery coolant pump go bad. Toyota dealers would not even look at it then, because I have the Chadmo DC charger installed. So I ended up changing the pump myself for $400, then paying Toyota another $200+ to clear the Tesla EV problem error in diagnostics, so I could get my sport mode to work again! It took me only 20 minutes to swap the pump, and 3 days of dealer visits to have 2 dealers tell my No we won't honor your platinum warranty and won't help me prior! It sucks really! The lack of service and attitude on the added DC charger is BS. I love this car, but if these break downs happen every couple months, I will be selling this car soon.

That sucks Jeff. Yeah, same boat it sounds like. How old is your 12v battery? A bad battery definitely creates issues with these cars. The contactors inside the battery pack are also something that causes this issue. That is my problem. Its a great car but the support is HORRIBLE. Thankfully I have needed almost nothing all these years. Have you watched my Rav4 review videos?

Sad to learn that after 10 years that Electric cars will eventually break down. Rav4s are great when it’s pure gasoline only. I know that batteries are complicated to deal with according to Scotty Kilmer. They save gas and money, I got to say, but the life expectancy is what makes it difficult. Thanks for sharing. Hello! I own a 2013 Rav4 EV that I purchased in 2015 pre-owned. Live in Las Vegas, and bought it through Carmax here. Broke down twice, first time the battery failed and they replaced it at 45k miles brand new battery. The second time was recently. An error code which stated "The computer EV gateway ECU needed to be replaced. That was costly. 😭 I justified the expense in hopes to buy me enough time with the vehicle to wait and get the Cyber Truck. Been doing EV vehicles since 2012. No turning back. Quick question, is their a way to reset the vehicle to showcase my true range? When I charge it only shows range of 80 miles. That can't be, since it's a new battery pack with only 30k. I tried unplugging the 12 volt. Doesnt do much. Any suggestions would be helpful. 😁
@JamesKlafehn
@JamesKlafehn 3 года назад
Im sorry you have had issues. I hope you are done having problems. Yes you can reset it but after some driving it will revert back. It thinks its smart and its estimating your actual available range. But i always found that it was low. 1) Fully charge vehicle using "Extended" with the J1772 port (not CHAdeMO) 2) Battery must be at room temperature. When you charge the RAV4 EV to 100% full on extended charge, it will be warm. If you park in an enclosed garage with outside temps in the 50F-60F, the battery will likely still be warm enough in 4-8 hours. 3) MAKE SURE THE CAR IS OFF !!! 4) Disconnect all 3 of the 12 volt battery negative cables, and leave it that way overnight. This will require removal of the M8 wing nut for JdeMO equipped vehicles, or a 12mm socket to remove the M8 hex nut. The cabin climate control will automatically go to OFF with battery disconnect. ***** Next day: ****** 5) Reconnect 12 volt battery 6) Hold foot on brake and press START button with key fob nearby just once 7) Energy "fuel" gauge will show Full (16 illuminated segments) and "LO" on the GOM 8) Wait for navigation unit to complete its start up (about 20 seconds) 9) Press START with brake pedal depressed a second time. You will hear a clunk of the main battery contactors under the front passenger seat and the dash should indicate "READY". The cabin climate control must be off. If it was not off, there is some issue prior to this step. 10) The displayed range is "RATED RANGE" at 3.5 miles per kWh 11) Divide this Rated Range by 146 to get usable battery capacity compared to new. Example: 142 rated range / 146 = 97.2% battery capacity from new

There is for other cars. If you have a leaf, bolt EV or i3 you can literally order parts and get service from the dealership fine.
