Consume less and create more is a great goal! Making more art off-camera is also something I’m trying to do, as we need to maintain our sanity and wellbeing. I can relate to so much of this video, and it’s like we’re having the same experiences on YT. I too have turned nocturnal. Last night working til 6 am. Crazy. It naturally sorts itself out. Not worrying. I love listening to you while I work tho. MVP here. I am on a no-low buy in all dimensions of life until I (god willing) finish my law degree in April 2026 and can move back to somewhere with a cheaper cost of living. It is during that time that I hope to pay for the Kofi membership and retroactively experience the artist retreat that you guys go on this year. I am manifesting it ✨

I love hearing artist goals, it also helps me think about things from another perspective. I laughed at the slow-mo of 'not buying sketchbooks" 🤣🤣🤣 I FEEL YOU!!!! I definitely agree that brands are using youtube artists to advertise and we are really getting taken advantage of. That's why I stopped accepting products completely. The amount of work involved is so high and all we get is the product? The video lives on forever, but we get the product once. I've seen some channels will edit-out the 'ad' part after 6 months, which is an interesting approach. Unless the brand sponsors/pays appropriately, they shouldn't get infinite advertising in a video, as you never know which videos will go viral.
Oh my goodness - I was just thinking about you and your comment popped up! Nigerians see it as a sign you'll live long lol (I'm Nigerian). I was thinking about your gouache landscapes & as I scrolled past our livestream video, you commented :) Loool the "no sketTtChhBoOkKssSs" was also because I hadn't scripted the video, and it was a bit of a stream of consciousness... and I wanted to take it back, but in theory, there isn't a scenario I could think of where buying another sketchbook (and ignoring my 100) would be necessary lol unless I complete 2 sketchbooks a week / sell my sketchbooks. :P Lol editing out the ad is interesting & honestly something I hadn't considered - I just took down some of the videos. Feeling used really grates me, I think at first I held on to the hope it would lead to paid collaborations with the brands, it's been 2 years lol... I'll finish off the ones I agreed to & then stop. I'd rather rest :) I can't wait to see all the amazing things you have planned for 2024! xx
But it's still an ad. Most "influencers" prop up an item in order to keep getting free things and/or paid. So now it's deceptive. Just get things you want to try and use them. It's more authentic.
Don't give up on making your own sketchbooks. There are so many artists or hobby painters who can't find the right sketchbook. Nothing seems to fit. And that's why we all end up having more than hundred sketchbooks and still searching. Again and again and again. Maybe your creation is the perfect one for so many people. It is not important if it happens this year or next or the year after. But it will happen. Don't give up on dreams!!! Loved this video very much. Always so honest, humble and heart warming. 🥰
I gave up Instagram a long time back. It is not an app I was drowned towards. Once I realised that I had to force myself to post there, I gave up. Mental health come first! I choose youtube because I actually enjoy post in here. Totally agree with gifted collaboration. They can send free stuff if they want to, but it need to be clear that they won't get a free video for it. I would just enjoy the supply for myself and make a video only if it makes sense for me. Such a thoughtful video. Thank you! I too am focusing on more creating, less watching, no buying. And I'll be making at least one plein air or urban sketch overnight roadtrip monthly to fluff my aura and escape distractions. Best wishes with all your goals. I imagine it'll become much easier to direct your energy into the things you truly want to make happen as you shift from the things that aren't serving you well. Just a thought, and it might be antithetical to your goals.... maybe do something like a limited edition sketchbook building course where you could mail a supply kit (except paper, so they could use their favorite) and offer a discounted short (time limited) personal zoom if they want individual assistance with a problem. I'm unaware of any such offerings; it might be a way to gain access to the broader sketchbook universe. And i have a sense that personal sketchbook binding is on the edge of becoming a Thing, as more folks want their own perfect sketchbook. Happy 2024!
Hi, Yes, I have goals this year too. I am actually planning to go on a low buy/no buy. As I too am an art supplyhaulic, and I truly need to take the time to enjoy the supplies I have and create more art, create more you tube content, and do less scrolling. That is one of my 5 main goals. You have many great tips. I will do the quarterly check in as well.
My art goals for 2024: 1) start a sketchbook practice 2) take up acrylic painting again 3) create at least 10 pieces I'm proud of 4) learn something new (maybe lettering)

I have no written goals at this moment except for trying to use what i have (art supplies, bath products, books etc) and not buy much new. I do love stickers so that's the hardest part, to not buy cute stuff and support my favorite illustrators
Lower buy. Create more. Less reels scrolling. Paint earlier in the day. Prioritize using art supplies I own that are hidden in drawers or on shelves. Take online or in person skills building classes each month.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and goals. My only goal is to finish all the paper I have accumulated through the years since I started painting. I have hoarded so many that I am running out of space. I also found interesting your whole collaboration perspective and I will agree with you. Artists are taken advantage too much. It will give you more time to actually search for paid collaborations than having things that you don't need in the long term. You cannot eat paint and you cannot exchange them for rent. I admire that you have a crazy work schedule and still make time for filming, to the detriment of your sleep unfortunately. I am constantly tired and I would rather eat and sleep when I am home 😅

yeah, I've goals. a low-buy is one of them, making more art another actually. I did the whole Insta detox thing a few years ago and never got back on the wagon since. I check every now and again, and sometimes I post, but it's just not fun anymore. And there are so many other things I spend my time on. Loved hearing your goals for 2024 and hope you are able to achieve them because many sound like they will truly improve your overall wellbeing, not just your art, and that is so important! I actually took some time on the weekend and wrote out my 2024 “intentions” for various things in my life that I would like to focus on improving/changing. I have several healthy habits that I followed for MANY years that fell off my radar during some very stressful times in 2023 and I want to re-establish those habits to feel better. Just by spending more time doing other things, it will lead to less time on RU-vid which will help my low-buy 😅. My low-buy will allow me to replace things I run out of, but generally, I want to create more and spend less. I want to work on my creation hobby, not my collection hobby 😊. I ordered Etchr’s new sketchbook sizes as a Christmas/birthday gift to myself and that will be my only sketchbook purchase this year! I truly hope a lot of other RU-vid artists follow your lead regarding gifted collaborations. I understand wanting to continue with certain strategic brands and perhaps selecting 1 or 2 that you want to work with; I think it makes sense to do that (i.e. Etchr 😂). I hate looking at my video feed and seeing 10 artists all reviewing the same set of products within days of each other. It feels like I’m being asked to watch 10 LONG advertisements (I often watch to support the content creator, even though I have zero interest in the product). It has actually made me NOT like certain brands because I feel they are using artists to create commercials for them. I prefer seeing reviews of items that someone has purchased themself and has used for a period of time.

Year 2023 I completed my no buy year, yay! This year 2024 I want to creat more and reduce watching RU-vid. Here I am watching RU-vid BUT…. only for a short time 😄 then I need to carry on with my commission 😊 got to try do art when I get home from work 🤨
My goals are to create something every day and to start plein air painting. Especially, since I got etchr field case and slate. Plus all my pan paints and travel brushes. I am hoping to inspire my high school art students.
Happy new year 😊. I’m repeating to anyone who will listen. I’m doing a watercolor no buy but a low buy for other supplies. I have some unopened watercolor palettes therefore this year I’m not buying any watercolors until Thanksgiving, where I will assess if I need anything or not; I can buy art supplies if I really need it/I have run out (rather than want it); or I have credit card cash back. Confession: I haven’t done any watercolor painting for weeks. Last week I picked up my coloring pencils and started to color a line drawing from one of my coloring books. Well said re: the gifted collaborations. It's not really a gift if you are busting your gut for hours in exchange for a $20 product. Your time and effort is worth way more than £1/hr! My self-imposed goal for 2024 is a low-buy challenge: for every 10 half pans of watercolour I use up, I can buy 1 new one :)
My goal is to do more Art and too carry on making birthday & celebration cards for my family and friends and to not purchase anymore watercolour paints but I do have 5 more colours in mind for my Roman szmal pallet which isn’t yet full . I’m yet to try and get hold of a few colours that are difficult to get and to increase my colour range a bit . But apart from that nothing else but just to carry on with my art inc abstract art & architectural art and landscape art and to improve my watercolour skills when painting flowers , roses & sunflowers mainly and lavenders . Oh and most definitely improve on drawing and painting tree’s , I’m terrible at drawing and painting trees . I would also like to purchase 3 more things this year , a new fude fountain pen the green sailor one and some of that waterproof fountain pen ink and the pentel pocket brush pen because I’d love to do more art with a fountain pen but with waterproof black ink . So not many purchases this year and they can wait until either Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day , or a bit of both and spread it out a bit .
Happy 2024! I have definite goals for this year. I have too many art supplies and will remain on a no buy unless there is a limited edition watercolour paint I really want. I laughed at your sketchbook comment because I think I have enough sketchbooks to last me a couple of years. No sketchbooks in 2024. I want to loosen up in my painting style and become less detail oriented. I want to really get into urban sketching so that’s my 2024 focus for art. I really like your idea of one committed art day a month so I don’t get distracted with other tasks. Sleep is a goal. Sleep has eluded me for months because I’ve had BPPV vertigo when I lie down or turn my head while sleeping. It’s improving but I know it will take time and I’m glad it only hits in bed. I am looking forward to your 2024 videos.

Hello! I loved this video! Have recently subbed to your RU-vid. Your amount of energy just amazes me!! I raised 5 kids and been married 49 years Jan 31. Now have 2 Great Grands! So cute. I ve never been a goal setter because im all consumed with just THAT if I do it. So having said THAT I do have a sketch book by my bed and if I havent done art that day I draw something - anything before I allow myself to read. So i guess im not totally hopeless😅 I am going to be on a low-buy this year and I only buy what I can pay off right then& usually buying on-line. And sleep... I have a hard time getting good sleep. To listen to my heart more say NO to anything that feels heavyweight for me but YES to myself because I just know I'm fun to hang out with 😊 looking after myself I feel I'm really looking forward to this year...I'm using my desk calander and my little diary to plan and make my dreams come through love the idea of art retreats but I'm pretty ill on treatment and cannot commit to anything pretty much so my goals are doable I love reading walking for 10 mins meditation for 10 mins I make it short sessions so it gets done and I feel happy and confident in the moment ✨️ loved 👍 subscribed 😊HAPPY New Year to you and all here❤

I'm really proud of you for working on a healthy sleep schedule! I do love to tease you by asking you what time it is in London, but sleep is so important, and sometimes I do worry about you when you're up at 4 and 5 in the morning. I'm glad to hear you're prioritizing rest in general, particularly with the crazy work schedule you must have. Among other goals for 2024 -- I want to do a low-buy for art supplies this year. Like you, I have so many supplies I've barely used, plus a ton of sketchbooks, paper, canvases, etc., as well as a new mini-airbrush and a gelli plate I got myself for Christmas. One of my goals for this year is more art, but just playing around and experimenting, rather than starting a drawing or a painting with idea that I need to produce something for Instagram. I also want to fill up one (or more!) of my unfinished sketchbooks!
The free product sponsorship on youtube is so prevalent :'( I've received a bunch over the years and have really enjoyed them, but I keep having to remind myself they're really taking advantage of artists. I accepted one more but I'm the same as you; I really need to knuckle down and learn what to charge for a video, especially with the rise of tiktok/shorts, they usually expect both a video AND a short, and it's getting silly. It's great to hear your thoughts!
I agree, and I think that it can be done right, but now that it is the norm it is just brands taking advantage of artists. It is going to be hard for me to say no in honesty lol the video was in part to hold me accountable so that once I complete the collaborations I've already agreed to, I can stop. Good luck xx

I like this consume less and create more. I hope to reduce my screen time and increase creative production. But also the walking, I plan to start walking soon. Once a week is a reasonable goal,so I think I’ll copy you.

I thought about breaking them down into quarterly actions, but decided to set monthly intentions instead. What?! You have grown your art channel and you are still making vids for brands for free? 😮 I mean, at the beginning, when you are growing the channel and community, it's great! But now you have full right to ask for a fee for making videos for them. At least that's what I'm planning to do. It's your time, energy and skills you put in making videos, so you'd better ask for the deserved payment 😊 I understand that you are not the only part in collaborations, but you still can have your standards and requirements ❤️ This is me, leaving a note to my future self as well 😅 Anyway, I hope you'll achieve all of those goals this year ❤️

There was a time when these brands offered some 20pound supply or cheaper and you really weren't expected to do anything other than what you saw fit, such as some plain swatches, some people were doing like half hour videos without any creative content or any significant editing. I was asking myself the same question, why do people accept such a high volume of work for some cheap supply box, sometimes it's obvious that it's not worth it. I think that they expect that the people would be on RU-vid making videos, and at least they get some supply, but still it's not worth it in most of cases. Thank you for upload, pretty hair lady 😊😊

I hope to finish at least two, hopefully three, of my sketchbooks. I also want to spend less time watching watercolor videos and looking at IG and more time painting. I plan to do more plein air painting. And finally, I'd like to learn about value studies, shadows, color theory. etc.

My goals have to be being more proactive in doing healthy things as I’ll be turning 69 in 10 days! I need to get on my bike, start walking again, and get my hubby to go with me. I sit too much, and I know, when I’m doing art, it’s not really sitting. But am I using it as an excuse? Yeah, sometimes. 🫣
