This review helped me realize my M1 iPad Pro is still more than enough for me. The whole filming/streaming thing is amazing but doesn't apply to me at all. Thanks Dave for always delivering unique perspectives on this stuff.
Same, I’ve been thinking about updating as I’m a bit addicted to having the latest tech. But I think I’ll stick with my m1 iPad Pro 12.9. Sounds like the mini led is good enough not to feel blown away by the OLED.
Agree. It would be great to boot Mac OS. I think if my MacBook has a native Netflix app that I could download films and series on for flights and travel, my iPad would become redundant. Looking forward to seeing the m4 and OLED creep into MacBook. Would love to see it on the air but know they’ll hold it for the MacBook Pro. Also the trade in values on our iPad is pretty strong. That’s the one thing that’s tempting me… but then I think I don’t want to have to buy another pencil on top of it etc. I don’t get why Apple couldn’t support the old pencil. Even if it couldn’t charge the pencil, I’m sure there could be ways to charge it externally.
I almost exclusively use my m1 12.9 ipad as a 2nd display with my MacBook. I've barely taken any notes since I graduated, I don't read mangas anymore and consuming media on my phone is more comfortable for me than using the ipad. I also have to remind me to charge the pencil in fear of deep discharge. It feels weird using this behemoth of a powerful device almost only as a monitor. Maybe I should sell it.
not really that insane tbh, every reviewer gets the product weeks ahead so they can fully film the review ahead. You just have to upload the video ahead and make it available for public at the embargo lift time.
I mean it seems like a cool idea, but I feel like with a studio like his, why doesnt he just get some real hardware video switchers? ATEM + stream deck with bitfocus would run his set up pretty nicely.
@@MoChuang343 Because it will cost much more than the iPad, will be much more bigger and not as easy to use for a single person. It would be an extreme overkill.
i believe the only reason the 13 inch pro has a black cable is because its colour matched, considering you have the space black 13 inch and the silver 11 inch, it may make sense
Oh man i love this guy. Just pure video edited in real time, no stupid cuts every second and no “right after word feom today sponsor blah blah” 🙄 YOU ROCK! 😍
Wouldn't it make more sense that the 11 inch didn't have a black cable because it wasn't the black variant and your 13 inch model was!? Or am I missing something here?
This is kind of the first iPad review I saw that explained how the iPads could be used for the actual pro workflows other than the drawing ones. You never fail to bring the best out of your reviews man! Always a fresh perspective!
As a daily iPad Pro user, the "Magic" keyboard is the bane of my existence. Not because the hardware is bad, or because of the missing keys, but because iPadOS just does not like to work with physical keyboards, first-party or not. For example, to use the password manger, I have to remove the keyboard so that the virtual keyboard would show up which contain the password-auto-fill button. In addition, almost every app I got does not work well with it. The keyboard overlay menus would block whatever in the bottom right corner (like the "send" button of a messaging app). That overlay also often cause the UI of apps to glitch out; at which point, I would have to un-dock/re-dock the thing. So... I don't care if things are changing, I will care when they are changed.
They have a faster processor now though, lmao. Yeah, Apple software quality is falling off of a cliff, along with hardware fragmentation. They still have a lot of mojo, but in many places they're becoming one of the other manufacturers.
Yes I thought I would use a lot more but this just is so annoying. Also because of the os whatever they do this can't replace my Mac as a software developer
You can pick up the keyboard UI bubble and move it around. Move it to a corner to have it tiny and out of the way, flick to the other corner if there's a send button in the corner you need. Then drag it to the middle to get the big UI with the auto fill passwords and other suggested auto fills and flick it back away once you are done. No redocking required.
You don’t need to remove the iPad from the keyboard to use the password auto-fill. I use iCloud passwords all the time. Maybe try enabling predictive typing? Not sure why you’re not seeing passwords at the bottom of the screen.
I could watch Dave talk about his experience of watching paint dry and still enjoy his thoughts. Such a genuine person. Keep the great content coming please, sir.
I got a black braided wire with my 11 inch M4 iPad Pro also. 😅 But having spent a couple of days with my M4 iPad Pro, I can’t help but feel the M4 capability is being limited by the OS. Perhaps an updated iPadOS just for the iPad Pro?
Was just about to post the same thing. 2018 pro I use daily for school, homework, and watching youtube/ shows. Can't find a reason to upgrade with these new devices.
We will see if WWDC will bring iPadOS 18 updates that make a difference. I really think Apple wanted something with the 3E (M4 and A18 Pro) available to test some iOS and iPadOS AI features that won’t be on the 3B architecture (M3 and A17Pro) chips.
Still rocking a 2018 daily, it's my go-to at home for RU-vid/TikTok, browsing, messaging, email.. use it on a stand for recipes, great for viewing photos. Still snappy and the screen is great but man.... I am really looking forward to an OLED screen.
Wow! You do all this all by yourself...I would have thought you have atleast 3 other people with you in your studio to shoot your vids...That's awesome Dave!
Thank you for an honest review I have the mini led I pad and would only upgrade if it was truly worth it to get oled screen I think I will wait a bit, as you said you have to put them side by side to see the difference. Great job mate. Thank you
Only stupids and careless dumbs bend expensive tech. Oh, and RU-vidrs to collect dumb people views before they return them within the 14days or under Apple care+ “iPhone 6 bends when I put it in my back pocket and sit on it”!!! Because nothing tech should be in the back pocket when you’re sitting dumdum! Jeans are not good because they’re gonna be torn when you sit on a knife! 😂
Exactly, but since N.A. barely has any exposure to Chinese phones, he may have missed it. I on the other hand read GSMArena almost daily so am up to date!
Hope you can keep us posted for your setup switch from Mac to iPad. Sounds very interesting and I am actually blown away that you do the editing in one single take! awesome
I do understand now how your videos are so qualitative and how you step up everytime (been like 5+ years I watch your videos) Running and manage four cameras is insane 🤯 Thanks as always for your work
Appreciate your thoughts, but the thing that you could've stressed on is the fact that the elephant in the room is iPadOS. It simply doesn't host powerful enough apps to really exploit the chip inside it, and that's why it seems mostly similar to the 2018 iPad despite being much more powerful on paper. The strengths you mentioned are real, but are for a niche audience nevertheless: the iPad would still struggle to be a great portable computer because of its OS. In that sense, the processor thing is just flashy and of little use.
It's up to the developers to make pro apps for the os. They don't need to change the os. I don't understand why people want them to turn it into a MacBook. Yes touchscreen this touchscreen that. It'll just make the other insignificant.
I am typing this from my new iPad Pro 11” and it came with the black cable. I downsized from 12.9 in because it gets too much with a 15-16”laptop. Thinner and less weight is amazing. Its more for multimedia consumption, browsing, reading, etc
I really appreciate your perspective here, I also have a 2018 ipad pro and I'm in the same boat, I have never really seen a reason to update. I still dont need a new one and it seems like you really have a legitimate reason to get the new one and I hope it works out as well as it did in the demo.
Hey Dave! Which app are you talking about for the multi-camera set up? i do similar workflows and seems like a useful app i could research about! thanks!
Wait...the thumbs and subs line is BACK!?!?!?! 🥳🥳🥳 I feel you with the 2018 iPad Pro. I have one and still don't feel a need to upgrade. Same with my M1 MacBook Pro. One day, just not needed yet. Hope it works out for your setup! Would be a neat vid to watch how you get everything working on th new iPad.
video production on one ipad taking inputs from multiple cameras at the same time: unimaginable just a few years ago. also didn't expect that to be the reason to be upgrading to this ipad
I think the black cable is to match the color of the iPad... As I'm sure you were trying to get this out that just slipped your mind. Great review, excited for mine to get here! I think they were using 4 iPhones, definitely looking forward to see if you can get it working with the other cameras!
I really loved seeing your camera set up, I always notice your hand go off the screen to change the layout and wonder what you're using. As for your idea, how are you going to send the video from your 4k camera's to the ipad wirelessly? Also, I'm not convinced a single ipad (even an m4) would handle 4 4k streams seemlessly. Anyway. Love the videos Dave. Please do an update on your setup when you get your ipad rigged up!!
I haven't looked into iPad specific implementations, but from what peripheral knowledge I have in the imaging industry, there are already wireless HDMI transmitters. So you would plug the wireless transmitter into the HDMI output port of your camera. Typically, in the professional industry, these would use their own proprietary radio standard, and the signal is then received with another device that is then connected to a monitor via HDMI. I'm fairly certain I've seen online products that will just have the transmitter plugged into the camera turn itself into a WiFi hotspot that an iPad can connect to, but I have no first hand experience with them, and I would imagine there would be a signal camera limitation in that case. I'm not sure if such a product currently exists, but if there was a wireless HDMI receiver device with WiFi hotspot capability, then it would theoretically be possible. -- I would imagine latency would be worse with this, but theoretically possible: -multiple proprietary radio, low latency radio transmitters hooked up to each camera -multiple proprietary radio, low latency radio receivers to pair with the above -each of those receivers connected via HDMI to a multi-video-input device/controller/manager -the output of that controller into a single HDMI output, which is then connected to an HDMI to WiFi hotspot device, which the iPad wirelessly connects to
How would you have all your sony cameras wireless? If it’s using the cameras Ad Hock wifi I wouldn’t expect it to work reliably. Curious to see if it works!
Hey Dave with the new ludicrous M4 upgrade, does it support output of 120hz to external monitors though? 4k 120hz to be exact. A bit dizzying and jarring for me to let my eyes keep changing from the 120hz ipad to a huge external 60hz monitor.
I don't get it, isn't this multi camera iPad feature only for iPhones cameras? So you'd be switching your professional mirrorless cameras with a bunch iPhones? Which when added up will be around the same price as a maxed out Mac Studio?
If you have a Samsung phone get yourself a video capture card and you can use the IPad Pro 11 as a monitor for Dex when you have work to do, the Tab 9 Ultra is far too big to be carrying around whereas the Pro 11 is just the right size and you also have access to iOS along with Android.
I am sooo ready for that OLED screen… Maybe I am hyper-focused on the details but the black levels between the mini LED and OLED are immediately apparent.
The 11" iPad Pro (in space black) also comes with the black charging cable. It's shows the color of the charging cable on apple's website during checkout (the "what's in the box" section)
Thanks for the insightful review, Dave. The reason I have not been upgrading is because of the "limited" features on apps on iPad. For example, I use Excel quite extensively and there are a number of features not available in the iPad Excel app even though I am using the Office 365 which supposedly the same as the Mac or Windows versions. Anyway, hopefully the day will come I can make a switch like you. That will be the dream because traveling with an iPad is definitely a lot easier than bringing a laptop.
Hey Dave, I get it the multi cam function is native and Logic Pro ready but have you considered or tested apps that promises to do this on the store already? Recently I've had similar need on a smaller scale and found out this app called Detail (or Details I think) which is a fancy OBS but did the job connecting phone, pad and MacBook m1 together nicely.
The charging cables are colour matched with the iPad, so black for Space Black and white for Silver. Then there’s a cleaning cloth only for the nanotech display only. I like Dave’s style of content, not just repeating what Apple said on stage but giving an insight on the products.
Wow, I did notice in the beginning of the video your camera record arrangement you before you explained it at the end of the video. Felt we're really connected I do look forward to your video about these setups, which I feel you also would share.
If you're not drawing something, just get the MacBook Pro. iPad OS will never catch up with a proper computer system like MacOS or Windows for productivity work.
hey bud.. so i really love your videos. but i wanted to ask you a question. of topic, but how do you get that split screen animation? Thank you so much in advance!!
2:13 LG has been making tandem OLED for car displays for years, get ready to hear how Apple just invented it 😂
I too have the 2018 ipad pro and I too felt the need to upgrade after 6 years. Certain software and games were just starting to show wear and tear on the trusty 2018. I'm excited to jump from M0 to M4.
