I’ve been dreaming about quitting (I almost did a year ago, actually told my boss and then I took it back lol) but my fear is that I don’t know what I’m going to do after the fact. People who know what they want to be in life are so fortunate. It’s so hard knowing that you’re not happy where you are and at the same time not knowing where you want to go. I feel so lost.

@@MichaelOblitey that’s the thing. I don’t even know what I’m passionate about anymore (aside from taking care of my own kids, but it’s impossible for me to be a stay at home mom right now due to finances) and in between taking care of my family and working two jobs, it’s hard to spare some time to figure out what my passion is. This is SO relatable. I have not stayed in many jobs long because ultimately despite the fear, self-doubt and uncertainty that comes with self-employment, I cannot stand to unhappily work for someone else or a company and am way more happy and wealthier when I work for myself and am actually happy doing what I do and don’t feel trapped. I was also lucky to work and save when I was young to afford myself flexibility and autonomy in my 30s. Fear of instability and uncertainty keeps people trapped in jobs they hate.

I sincerely believe that it is easier for young people to quit their jobs than someone my age. I always wanted to have my own business, but I didn't have the guts to do it. I have a job that is not very creative and I still have difficulty with the hierarchy, but I have a good salary and a pension fund. I have thought many times to have my own RU-vid channel to talk about issues of people in their 50s. People still have dreams at this age, nothing is over until the end. If there was anything to take away from this, it was at the 8:39 mark. Make sure you are running towards something instead of running away from something. I think for a lot of people who dream of quitting the 9-5, those feelings probably stem from wanting to run away from the 9-5. But that hopefully shouldn't be a problem so long as it is recognized, and then you can start to think about what you want to start running towards. Awesome video again my man. This really resonated with me as well!!! What an amazing concept and mindset to have. For example have a side hustle that you do on the side and then build it as it is what your running towards! my struggle is that I am the only one working and am a family of 6 (4 kids who are 10 and under, myself and my wife). We rely heavily on the Health Insurance as well, which is another downside to quitting for me. But most of it has been trying to believe in myself if I could really do it...15 years of corporate America is really hard to get away from once you are use to the paycheck to paycheck and then the thought of going into the uncertainty is very overwhelming.

I am very interested in your perspective. Quitting my job is my ultimate goal, because it means I can support myself from my passion. My biggest worry of doing so is that my passion would then have added pressure to focus on income making it feel forced and feel like a job again. Also, the social stigma would be huge, I don't know how I would even go about telling my foreign parents lol.
@MichaelOblitey
@MichaelOblitey 2 года назад
First of all I can relate to you about the foreign parents. My parents were born and raised in Accra, Ghana. Second it def is a huge leap to go after your passions and it being your source of income. My advice, and this is just advice lol, focus on providing value and service to your customer. I have come to realize that when you chase money it leaves, but if you chase providing service and value to others, then money will chase you! Hope that helps!

That's true - there's always the worry of your passion turning into something that you no longer enjoy doing because you're being compensated for it. Hopefully we'll be able to find a balance with this. The situation with your parents is tough and I can 100% relate since my parents were born in China. Are you able to try to start your passion project and maybe make a decent amount of income first before you officially quit? That way you show your parents that it's a feasible path

@@VincentChan that’s very true! It’s my plan to first show a “proof of concept” and hope that makes it easier for them to understand. But they are so traditional I don’t think they will like it because it’s not something they understand. But perhaps they will and I am worrying for nothing! Your videos are very refreshing, I rarely watch any kind of finance videos bc for the most part they come across as disingenuous, scammy, and/or just have a way of making you feel guilty about yourself. So far your advice has been practical, realistic, honest and intriguing from your own personal anecdotes, your motives for making the channel and simply your personality lol :) just subbed

Impostor Syndrome is so normal when going freelanced but it’s just a feeling of being unprepared or the classic “not good enough”. But the best way to overcome this is identifying where do you need a bit more research or just let your self fail and modify ✨🙏🏻

Hi Vincent, I like the name Vincent, any how I am glad you uploaded this video. I worked from 1978 to 2015 years I put in my retirement papers and at first it was like wow, no more job to go to. However, I did have money coming in from all those years of working. I felt free. Relief joyful and a since of accomplishment I arrived. I was of a course 57 years of age and time flew by so fast I just celebrated 7 years being retired. Now, it is like I have lot of time and I do not need to work; I am also introvert I always been that way. So, when I feel I need go see somebody I take a walk and there people all over the place so, going for a walk help out a lot with the feeling cut off from people and even watching you tube videos help me realize there many people at home watching a screen most likely by themselves but I realize I am not a lone there 7 billion people all over this earth. Thank you for sharing your thoughts in this video.

New to this channel, glad to have found you, like ur content and sound and syntax of your voice. Plus i like ur humor :) and that song IS really catchy. Truth is there isnt necessarily a sense of security even with a job. The workplace drama of the moment, financial decisions of leadership, performance on our worst days (cuz we all have them), solvency of the industry and economic cycles of boom and bust can make that security feel way less than "secure."

For the algorithm! Off the charts, I think it is awesome that you are comfortable in your own skin, put a spin of humor on finance and career which is very appreciated :) Also we all appreciate your honesty that some people don't talk about, especially finance in society being somewhat still taboo.

Your idea for teaching young ones about personal finance is really great. Honestly, I really wish I have the knowledge about personal finance at a tender age. Maybe I won't be struggling this much right now.

The best quote is to make sure you’re running to something instead of away from something. I voluntarily took early retirement in March 2021. It was very difficultly at first to keep the focus on my purpose. I still work on it but definitely I am much happier! I could only have done it by saving early and living within my means. I love your channel! You are wise beyond your years!
