Using my Dad’s 8mm film camera, I set out to explore whether it would have been possible to vlog in the 1970’s.
Film made by Paul Allen
Behind the scenes and back-up sound: Marek Larwood
Titles and Credits: Claire Speight
Music: Thomas Harvey, Barbarella’s Bang Bang & Paul Allen.
Official Selection: FilmBath / Palena Film Festival / Making Waves Film Festival 2018.

As a 60 year old today, I'd say that the tape recording sounds like what we used to think was great back then.

In the 80s it became more easy to vlog yourself but even then it was weird. Nelson sulivan who vlogged from 83 to 89 would always be asked "why are you filming yourself?" Its crazy to sew how far we have come really

I am not sure if someone pointed this out, but Kodak was making Sound Super-8 film up until the 1990s, and Super-8 home movies could absolutely have synched sound. Sharing was done by way of using a projector, some would project and read the soundtrack on the film as well. There were also cameras with macro lenses that you could have just hand held and been in focus. I admire the efforts you have put into place to make this vlog - probably the only vlog I've ever watched because I am not fond of the way digital images look, and would definitely watch more user generated content if it was shot on film - for what it's worth, the process you followed is as interesting as the result and a big part of it.

There’s something about the old grainy look of 8mm film that makes everything appear much more cinematic. I saw footage that was taken the other day on a flightline of US Air Force pilots scrambling current day bomber aircraft that for some reason was taken with an 8mm camera. Much more intense and the plumes of smoke from the back of the planes firing. It full throttle reminded me of Vietnam war footage. Made it somehow seem aged and yet, it was filmed last month.

in the 70s it was actually possible to record sound directly onto the film, as some film stocks had magnetic strips for audio. However sadly nobody makes these films anymore and no one currently processes them.

Seventy quid for a Super 8 cartridge!?? Hells bells. That said, even back in the 70's, they weren't that cheap either, so it would be prohibitively expensive. Great video though and a smashing idea.

Could he have vlogged? Well, yes. And easily too. My dad's super 8 was simpler than yours, but my uncle's had a better lens, recorded sound (a mag strip ran down the film), and was only a little bit bigger. When I was 11 (very early 70s) we filmed going to Niagra Falls, and were able to film ourselves sitting at a table in the Skylon, even though that was only a short distance between us. The lend coped fine. Of course, we still had trouble with the spool size, but prices were better then because it wasn't such a rare thing. On holiday. my father would shoot ten or more reels, then edit with a very basic little hand editor onto a big reel for the projector. It was hardly the big Steenbeck I would use later, but it worked, and the sound was kept in sync throughout. So, although your experiment was fun, it wasn't using the right gear - it wasn't using much better gear that was easily available back then.

Outstanding Video, Sir! Your video is about what most of us age 63 (myself) or older already understood. The only way to "hear" what was said on my parents old Super 8 films would be to hire a lip reader. During the 1960's filming Super 8 film with no sound, I spent most of the time just dancing around & smiling....with no audio PLUS that huge blinding, unending flash machine shining on you while you filmed. On my parents NYC wedding day in 1958, the film shows my Mom post-wedding, serving my father his first "post-wedding meal" with Big Smiles. On the film seated at the kitchen table, he takes one bite of food, stood up & fell to the floor pretending to die from poison, while my Mom feverishly waved a white cloth hanky over his head on the floor in her effort to "revive him". Super 8 films made all of us behave like "Mimes"....if we wanted to make a clever film.
