My 82nd Airborne Division

This is a video about the 82nd Airborne Division. I served as an Airborne Infantryman with the 82nd while I was in the Army. This video was shown at the 82nd Airborne museum on Ardennes back in the mid '90s till whenever. I used to watch this when I would go there, and my mom bought it for me. I was born with paratrooper blood and finally realized my dreams when I joined the Army in 1997. This is a little dated...heck, it was a little dated when I was in....but it still is a cool video and should make some people stand up and feel proud. Airborne!

Its all good... I commented on the post because I was in the 82nd 1/504 Scout Platoon back in the early 80s when most of the stuff in this video was still being used, we were still eating C-RATs until about mid 1982... I was in CSC (Combat Support Company) RECON I think CSC was renamed when they did the restructure of the unit... Dam... I am old

There was a similar PR video when I was there 94-97 that ended with General Sullivan addressing us after Operation U Turn (Haiti), and closed with Firehouse's "Reach for the Sky" song.

The 82nd Airborne Division kicks ass. I remember reading a book about them and it stated that everyone -- from the cooks to the mechanics are all airborne-qualified.
@fenianguy
@fenianguy 15 лет назад
Yeah....pretty much for sure you'd get to the 82nd with 11x + airborne. You might get up to Alaska or Italy, but probably Ft. Bragg with the 82nd.... best of luck. AIRBORNE!

Of course there are certain elements of many units that are Airborne - but the only Airborne Division where the whole Division is Airborne qualified is the 82nd. Thanks for serving us.

Hey I want to be in the Special Forces 18F in the long run, but they say I shouldn't do the 18X cause no people from the Special Forces likes new fresh recruits straight from basic. I was wondering if I should go the 82nd Airborne or 101st Airborne? Which one should I follow the path of?

I remember watching this while I was in 82nd reception fresh out of jump school in '96. I love how they hint on all of the shit every grew to bitch about- running all the time (minimum 4 miles monday-friday), being in the field or on deployment, and then they throw in this cheesedick ending. Don't get me wrong I loved this shit but the fact we were forced to sit and watch it! HAHAHAHAHAHHA!!!

Does anyone know anything about the last clip of the soldiers returning? I remember picking my dad up at Dobbins when I was 11 coming back from the Gulf. He was on one of the first flights back, we threw a great party, police shut down the street, his work paid for his party, we had something like 2500 people show up in our front lawn. I did not go into the army but I have the greatest respect for you all. Be safe and come home soon.

Well the Army is very big. SO far the only active Airborne unit is 82nd b/c they are part of the Rapid Deployment Force. There is the 173rd in Vicenza Italy, usually when people re-enlist they choose this so not many slots are left for new recruits, not to put them down but they are a smaller unit and not on call like 82. Then I heard of a ABN unit in Alaska but Im not sure who they are. I pretty sure most of the units you mentioned were deactivated a while ago.

Dude, tell your recruiter that you want airborne school in your contract. If you go 11X, you might get something else. I went in as an 11X, I wanted 11B but I got 11M. I had lots of fun and do not regret it. This is the best way in my opinion. It's been a while for me so things might have change. Good Luck!

Magic Man. How old are you? Are you planning to join the military? what are your questions? Training hasnt changed much since 70's, lol. 82 does only static line jumping=there is a cord(static line) attached from your chute to the plane. Your chute opens automatically you only free fall for 4 sec. Combat jumps are from 500ft(very low) so low that you dont have time to open your reserve :D. Most training jumps are at 800FT some fun jumps like from helis are 1200ft.

Just tell your recruiter make sure he can get you assigned to 82nd. If you tell him you want to be Airborne and pass airborne school there is a 98% chance you are going to division. The other 2% goes to Alaska or Italy. 82nd is where you will end up :)
@adamc6371
@adamc6371 7 месяцев назад
Yeah, thats not quite how the math works. Where you go is highly dependent on your MOS where some places you just cant go because you're the wrong MOS but if you were one where you could go anywhere, I'd say somewhere like 70% chance you get bragg, but only 50% chance you get into div. There are only 5 airborne brigades in the army, 1 alaska, 3 bragg, and 1 italy. Plus cmd support 82 div hq/hhbn, 18 abn corps at bragg, and the 5 various SOF support groups (about a bn size of non-SF personnel each) 1 also at bragg, and the tradoc airborne element at benning and AAS at bragg (They might actually be under corps or garrison rather than tradoc tbh, i don't know). If you're combat arms and not going through selection (or washed out, rip), then yeah 82d is where they send you unless you're (un)lucky and get italy/alaska, I worked with many people who went there for their first assignment then came to the motherland. Highly recommend doing the reverse because there are so many 82d-isms that some people have difficultly adapting to either because they came from 173 or from non-abn units. There is a reason why nearly all senior ldrs in div have spent basically their entire careers in div. Is it nepotism or strengthening/guarding an ABN culture from legs? you be the judge.

Airborne is becoming obsolete now a days with regular Infantry units, light infantry like the 75th and Special forces on the other hand is a different story. The bread and butter now a days is Air Assault. The school is much tougher than airborne anyway. If I had to choose between where I would go it would be an air assault unit.
