Who are Kara and Nate?!

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married 2013 and were super “normal.” I was a teacher and Nate started a small business from the spare bedroom of our apartment. We discovered the world of “travel hacking” & became obsessed. So after 2 years of saving $35k and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016 for a “one year” trip around the world. Our goal was to see as many places as possible before we rean out of money and went home to normal life. We started this travel vlog to share our experiences with friends and family, but quickly fell in love with this lifestyle and did everything we could to keep going. 4 years later, we achieved our new goal of visiting 100 countries and all 7 continents. We had no plans to slow down, until 2020 forced us to ;) Which is when we bought a converted van to start exploring our own country for the first time. Van life was a major adjustment and so different than flying every week like we were used to, but we are incredibly thankful to be able to continue doing something we love every day. 😊🎥🌎

I didn't make it past the tying of the shoes. Had to grab the tissues! So sweet! I miss my grandpa every day. We used to camp in his Ford Aerostar van that he had taken the back bench seat out of and converted into a bed. My uncle was the VW bus enthusiast. He probably had at least three behind our house at one time.

That VW set me back in time. In the 60's we had 2. The first one was a camper with a 50 gallon water tank. The front was a bench seat. You pull the back up and it made into bunk beds with a curtain to hold the back up. Behind the front seat was a bench seat with the same kitchen set up as that. A table then another bench seat in the back. It had the closet. We camped all over England with it for about 4 years. Came back to the states and got a WV bus. Took all the camping gear out of the other and put it into the bus. Took that bus to Italy for about 3 years. Traveled through Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. The first one was red and white. The second was blue and white. Great memories 🤗

I loved so many things about this video. My favorite moment was when Nate and Pop discuss shoe tying techniques. It's not about the shoes, it's about two people who care a lot about each other cherishing time together. It's also precious that Pop knows how his technique is different from Grandma's! Great idea for a video and amazing that you will always have these memories of him on video! My grandma passed away at the end of last year at age 89 and she was my last living grandparent so it feels like the end of an area. Thanks to your Grandpa for the tour. When I was a kid in the 70’s, these vans were everywhere. I always wondered what the inside looked like! Now I know 😄

You are so blessed to have both your Mammaw and Pop still with you. Have every conversation you can think of with them now. Ask them about their childhood, when they dated, marriage, later life. Ask them every thing. I ran out of time with my parents and that still hurts to this day.

This video takes me back to the 1970s when my parents had one of these. We went on a LOT of trips in that van. When I was in high school, I took girls out on dates in this van. Oddly, none of the parents of the girls ever objected to a teenage boy showing up for a date with their daughter with a van with a bed in it. That's awesome that your grandpa is restoring the van... but the sad truth is that even restored, this van has a number of major flaws... the biggest of which is a way-underpowered engine. I remember many trips where we were the slowest vehicle on an uphill section of road.

Love Pop! Great guy that's always there for you either in person or on the phone! Keep this van and camp travels series with him going! Need to paint the van "Ruby Red Metallic" with a pearl white top, wheels, and pinstripe going down it with the word Ruby scripted into it! and get either the "4RUBY" license plate renewed or "RUBYRED" on it
