Templates are key in everything on the computer. It’s a universal truth. Make templates for any task you find yourself repeating. Anything from pre-made folder structures to code snippets. Work smarter, not harder!

I use Cubase but this was still really useful to see. I like the grouping you've done. Definitely going to try this to speed up work flow.

Great video! It’s great to show how simple and minimal a template can be. A lot of templates i have seen over the years are way too packed with plugins, to the point where the CPU is already in the red before you do anything. One instance where less is definitely more ;) Also congrats on the progress of your tutorials in the last 2 years! You’ve done a great job of condensing your content and explaining your subject matter with much more efficiency!

@@artfxdnb hahaha! Got that bell on so I never miss a vid dude! Great subject though mate, I really needed this because I am sick of being stuck with ideas the moment I open a blank Ableton project. Because it's blank, to start with, I find myself constantly messing with different plugins and shit then struggle to finish the tune I started in the first place. I'm definitely going to set up a template like this to help me kick-start my projects for the future though for sure. Cheers as always Art 👍

Very useful video ARTFX as usual, big thanks! But sorry for my maybe stupid question - how do you group different groups of tracks? I use Ableton 9 Live version and I can only group different tracks in different groups with ctrl+G hotkey, but I can't group these groups in one common group. Can you explain pls? :)
@artfxdnb
@artfxdnb 5 лет назад
You need Ableton Live 10 for that.

Great video mate, thanks! One question, how did you change the colour of Track Activators/ Track Delays/ Track Volume etc? They are usually yellow by default and I can't seem to find an option for changing this.

Cool video. Had a question. Why do you use a MIDI track to trigger the sidechain instead of an audio track? Just wondering what advantages you found over using audio.
@artfxdnb
@artfxdnb 5 лет назад
Just so I can easily change the sidechain trigger sound if needed without having to adjust all the audio clips.
@nikku1166
@nikku1166 5 лет назад
@@artfxdnb That's what i figured, but thought id ask anyway to see if there was addition advantages i was missing. Thanks for the quick response. I used to do it like that, but switched to audio clips. For me it's easier that way since I like to just sidechain the initial transient of the Kick (or Snare). I can chop the initial transient off the kick, then paste that ona new channel to create a SC trigger track. I've actually stated experimenting with a lot of other techniques i've seen recently. Chris from DC Breaks used Tokyo Dawn's Nova EQ (free actually) and sidechain's that to his kick\snare using a tight bell curve to carve out the frequency range of the desired conflicting channel. Saw Joe Ford doing EQ sidechaining as well, but he actually automates the negative gain of a bell curve in FabFilter Pro Q to do it. Thanks for the tip on how to get my FF1 compressor algorithm back, totally forgot about that when switching to Ablelton 10.
@crishimdnb
@crishimdnb 5 лет назад
since you make some processing on your Master Channel, do you also make by yourself the mastering process of the track?
@artfxdnb
@artfxdnb 5 лет назад
That depends if the label likes the master and/or if they have a mastering engineer.

No, I won't upload the template. If I upload the template that actually beats the purpose of having a template... A template is something *you* need to set up yourself so that it works with *your* workflow. This is the main reason why everybody's template will end up looking different because we all have our own workflow. Make the template like *you see fit* and include the groups, tracks and plugins that *you* use all the time, don't include stuff because you've seen me do it.

@@artfxdnb I understand your approach in this but maybe you should think about those who struggle with workflow.. I bet that lot of guys will copy your template anyway and will adjust it later... I think that is nothing wrong with that, we just need to be open-minded and not stuck with premade things and not adjust them but maybe I'm wrong, it's just my personal experience... disclaimer: I'm not trying to change your mind with that upload, just want to give you other perspective on this matter :) Thank you for your tutorials!

For me a template kills my creativity because it makes me do the same stuff the same way. I prefer to start with an empty project, with just a limiter on the master and a spectrum analyzer.
@artfxdnb
@artfxdnb 5 лет назад
That to me sounds like you have too much in your template than what is needed, limiting you in your choices. I purposely keep my template very minimal with no instruments loaded, just a few tracks, some groups and some basic effects I know I use 99% of the time anyway but other than that I'm free to do whatever I want. In the end, the template is still blank in terms of the musical content.
@Andre-gy5ml
@Andre-gy5ml 5 лет назад
@@artfxdnb Not at all. For example having everything grouped the way you have, you end up with the same routing and signal chain in all your songs. I can understand that for genres like drum n bass it kinda works but im trying to do something a bit more experimental and i dont enjoy that way of working.
@artfxdnb
@artfxdnb 5 лет назад
@@Andre-gy5ml well that has more to do with you as a producer than the fact there is a template, a template doesn't have to force you to do certain things, you can always break free from the things setup in your template. The point is if you use a template then that one should be set up according to your needs and if that is experimental music, then approach it that way.
