My sincere and heartfelt thanks to all of you for your patience, kindness, and support. I know it's an understatement to say I'm not looking my best in this video. But please, people, a guy's got feelings, too. 😒
Hi Rich, people who are good at what they do are always busy! I found your beginners series this week and really like the simple steps and professional approach to teaching absolute beginners. There are so many talented people out there but are just not good teachers and after 20 years of teaching experience myself ( not nusic) I can honestly say you are one of the few I have found on the interenet that can both do and teach. I really appreciate whatever time you are able to devote to this channel and look forward to any future content. Thank you so much.
This says it all ☝️ Wow I didn't realize you play with Steve Coleman!! Consider me blown away/not that I wasn't already blown away by your content (for real)
Hi there I'm a 57yo beginner and after trying many other channels but you have opened the door of bass to me. I look forward to your future posts. Thank you
Rich, I live in Toronto. I’d love some private lessons if you’re offering. Not sure how to contact you directly. Let me know? Hope you get this message. Thanks!!
same here. 58 yrs. these first 8 lessons- in a logical, consecutive ordering has been so much more helpful than guys who bounce all over the place. i know and understand they want you to buy courses - fair enough-- but a good foundation before would make me much more likely to buy a lesson package
Brother, you’re sharing knowledge like this FOR FREE. I’m sure I speak for many of us when I say we are beyond grateful. Your teaching style and view point on the instrument is so useful and refreshing. On behalf of all of us who resonate with this message, I say thank you. 🙏🏽
I think I speak for most of us when I say we love ya , Rich! I’ve been a supporter of the channel for 2 years, 7months and 0 days . I’ll never stop supporting the channel . It doesn’t matter to me if you post frequently or infrequently. Every video you give us is a gift. I’m super happy for you that you’re busy touring and teaching ! Please keep us posted with your tour dates this year ( hoping you’ll make it close to Switzerland!)
Rich, as a kid in 1968 I wanted to play the bass. I was on my own to find an instructor. It was the local music store with a nice guy who’s primary instrument was trumpet. He knew a few chords on guitar which in his mind made him a bass instructor. Lol. So the blind was leading the blind. After a few months I quit. I simply was having more progress listening to records and mimicking the bass lines. Much of the music was simple stuff so we started a band and played through high school. I went back a few times to try and figure out what was going on. It never made sense to me. I went into the business end of the music industry for the next fifty years. Now I have retired. I thought I would at this juncture give it another shot. I found your site. I have to thank you. I can’t believe how well you explain your concepts. We are very much alike in our way of thinking about this instrument. You have made many many light bulbs turn on. Almost to the point of being giddy. You are one hell of an instructor. I intend to compensate you for the joy you are providing to me. Maybe I’ll finally start calling myself a musician rather than a hack. Again, thank you for what you are doing.
I just found your videos not too long after I picked up my bass about 2 weeks ago but I can say that you have been the most beginner friendly, kindest, and most knowledgeable bass teacher I have had the pleasure of finding. You are amazing at what you do and I cannot thank you enough for your assistance in my learning of this instrument. Much love instructor brown
I am a musician and know that most of us must take advantage of situations as they come our way and we can only be in one place at one time. So, post when you can and share when you can. We will all be here when, like you, when we can. Thanks for continuing to share with us when time allows!
rich, as an old beginner but long time bass lover, I want to tell you how muchI appreciate your video lessons. I have had a hard struggle. I'm recovering from a stroke that affected my dominant hand(left). At first I could only practice 5 minutes a day. I have worked up to an hour a day, but I still stink. Can't make my fingers keep a groove going. I've tried playing right and left handed. Whether it's plucking or fretting, The left hand doesn't want to cooperate. I also do my daily hand therapy exercises. But I love music, especially at the low end. What I like best about your lessons is your no b.s. style of presentation. the lessons are well thought out. Not a lot of ego, but a lot of consideration for the learner. Thanks
So glad to hear you are well and busy! Thank you for all of your great instruction thus far. It has really made a difference for me. Looking forward to seeing more!
Rich, your content is the gift that keeps on giving for me. I find that going back to things I viewed and practiced more than a month ago still yields new fruit. I find new things in material I've viewed three times (just reviewed pentatonics today), so the thought of more new materials is very exciting. I pick up little things from other teachers and other channels but nothing has the continuity and clarity of your lessons, your logical approach to the bass, and I really thank you for that. You have made all the difference in the world to my playing. I play 4 string, but do not mind when you demonstrate on the 5 or 6 string, whatever works for you. Thank you again!
Thanks so much Rich for your commitment. You already have a great library of videos that I’m just digging into. Your effectiveness as a teacher is far and away miles ahead of many others on RU-vid. And you got style😎
Glad things are going well. No need to apologize. I have a channel myself and although I’ve had it for years, life gets in the way sometimes. Sometimes I just don’t have anything to say. And sometimes I produce a stream of content for a while. Yours is definitely among the best if not, the best bass instruction channels out there. I’ve been playing for a long time and gig regularly, but I really enjoy the various exercises and concepts that you throw out at me to try. Like you said there’s always room for improvement and there’s always new ways of doing things. I can’t always think of those things so it’s great to have these as inspiration.
Professor Brown, I am very glad to hear that you are doing well and that you have more content coming soon! The heart that you put into quality of your lessons is truly transcendent. I have applied many of the exercises that you have shown into playing and am excited to learn more!
Focus on what makes you happy! We're happy to wait. Your lessons are so good and the quality is outstanding. You're the only instructor I could find that actually taught me at a beginner level, and taught me well. Keep up the good work - you're great at what you do!
Glad to hear that you're well, that's a relief. You are such a great teacher and so positive in all your messaging, it is totally worth the wait for more bass goodness!
Thank you for the update! CONGRATULATIONS FOR REACHING 100K!!!!!! I'm not frustrated one bit! You're understandably a busy musician earning a living and living your life. I continue to be blown away and humbled every time I listen to music by Steve Coleman and the Five Elements and Andy Milne/Cosmic Dapp Theory/Dapp Theory!!! to Thank you for blessing the bass-playing community and may God continue to bless you as you bless us!!!
Thanks for the update, Rich, and for all that you do to help us. I love your channel and your teaching style. I wish that I were in Toronto and could take classes directly with you. One great aspect of channels like yours is that they remain available to us even when you are too busy to add new content. I review lessons multiple times, which is very helpful. I look forward to new lessons. Congratulations on the 100,000 subscribers! Alex
Love the channel, and always looking forward to new videos whenever they show up! Unlike so much of what's out there, your videos are 100% worth coming back to again and again to keep my practice routine in good shape. Your videos on metronome study and the sixteenth note subdivision fundamentally shifted my approach, and it's something I had never heard explained so well before (at least for me). I always keep the metronome set to play 2 and 4 now.
Thanks for the update Mr Brown, u have put my bass playing on a beautiful level. Your sequential exercises are glorious, so melodic ,the true essence of music. U the Man!!!
It's a privilege that you devote any of your time to US. So much gratitude to you for sharing your talent & knowledge. Much Love to you & the Brownstone channel 🤎✨️🙏✨️🤎
The best bass channel that revitalised my bass playing and the way you teach helped me to unlock a lot of stuff that I was struggling to get past for 10+ years. Thank you so much for your videos
Man, you ARE the Best!!! There’s already so much on here…. Who can honestly say they have mastered it all??? Thank you so, so much for this gracious offering!!!!
I inherited my one of my dad's bass guitars many years ago. A Yamaha BB3000A, worn and rough. Still, I always thought it was a beautiful instrument. Then, around 6 or so months ago, I saw a really cool bass cover of a song on RU-vid, and it kept showing up in my recommendations. I've clicked it every single time. Probably listened to it at least every other day since then, and each time I felt my desire grow until I just recently realized; I MUST learn this instrument. You've been a great help in my first 10 days of playing. After taking an embarrassingly long time to figure out that it wasn't just my fretting technique that sucked, but also my bass' setup, I've managed to play up until your beginner's lesson 4 decently well!
So glad this was a positive update. I am new to bass playing and you have helped me so much in understanding basic music theory and how it applies to our instruments. Thank you Rich, looking forward to whatever comes next.
Love your channel even more now that I know you're in Toronto. I'm in New Brunswick and have been playing bass off/on for over 30 years. You're an excellent teacher!
As a 67 yr old guy who after 45 years of playing rhythm guitar switched to Bass about 5 years ago and am self taught your videos have helped a lot. As someone who plays mostly gospel, blues, bluegrass…I seem to learn more in shapes and patterns. Looking forward to your new stuff. Thanks.
So happy to hear about all the great things you've got going on with touring, teaching and getting your new house set up. Your channel is a great learning resource for bass players of all skill levels and we as your audience are lucky to have whatever you have time to give us. Thank you for all you do. :)
I always look forward to new videos from you, but if they don’t come for a while, there is so much material for me to work on that I’ll be pretty busy. That said, keep ‘em coming when you can. You’re a great teacher.
Thanks for the update. I plan on following the beginner series. Built a bass (Solo Guitars) and fighting for time to work on learning with it. Only 80, so all you young’uns - no excuses!
As somebody who has only just found your channel, after looking at honing her bass skills after knowing I need to step up my playing ... I found yr beginner episodes, and now after a week of using them (1-4) as my warm up I feel I am playing so much cleaner. I can't wait to see how your content will improve and make me love my 5 string more each day
I fully support you! I am grateful for what you have created and shared. I also kind of like when creators release less as I too am a busy guy. Take care of yourself first. Much respect.
I only just came across this channel the other day, and I was so anxious at the beginning of this video; worried that I had only found this well of knowledge after it had dried up. Glad to hear that this is not the case and I'm looking forward to all the future videos, bless.
I'm newer to bass and even to the channel and have really loved what and how you have shared, i dont usually jump onto update videos a month after subscribing but explicitly - I would never want you to burn yourself to give more. it's awesome to hear that you're giving so much in every direction. Would love to see and learn more from you when you can at a pace that doesn't cost your sanity or health ❤
Honestly, we can't thank *you* enough. You're such an incredibly inspiring musician, a masterful teacher, but most importantly, such a kind and generous soul. That comes out in words and in music. Thank you!
❤🙏❤🎵❤LOVE 🎵LOVE🎵 LOVE❤🙏❤🎵❤ THIS channel and your vibe sir! Your skills on the bass are only matched by your humility, honesty and love for teaching....I am so very blessed to call myself a 'student' of yours.
I started following you just the other week, after seeing some of your videos. As a professional bass player always looking for ways to build a stronger and wider foundation I've found many of your videos very helpful, and I will for sure be directing new players to your channel in the future. I'm glad you will be keeping this channel going. There are many bass instructors on youtube, but not many that knows how to really teach. You're one of them.
Bonjour rich !
This is AMAZING! I just bought my first bass from an estate sale yesterday - a Steinberger Spirit Bass!!! Just wanted to say that your videos are insanely helpful, considering I'm self-teaching. You definitely inspired me! Thanks for dropping some knowledge & massive thanks for being yourself! Your efforts are not unnoticed! :) Hang in there!
Thank You! The best bass lessons ever, very intelligent way of explanation of important things, friendly way and tempo of speaking. I studied the wide use of triads within and beyond one octave, which is really useful and exciting. Very very big thanks to You from Estonia!
You´re the best bass educator I´ve seen so far. Take care yourself. We´ll stay here, when you release your next videos. Thanks for this update and for everything else!
I’m returning to the bass after many years away and I really appreciate your exercises, they’ve given me new ways to practice and quickly (re)grow my skills.
Rich, I came across your channel last year and it has been so helpful to me with my bass journey. I’m grateful for the beginners series you started. I have been using those videos to practice bass. Whether you post frequently or not I’m grateful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 🙏🏾
You deserve every bit of your success... You are one of my favorite voices... I'd always try and stick around the Rex when you were in the next band... Don't burn out!!!
Congratulations on your new home and the silver playbutton Brownstone! Truly impressive! I'm super happy for you! you're a staple in my bass growth, you have helped so many players including myself. you deserve all the amazing things coming towards you, and there's nothing wrong with taking a break.
Now I’m even more grateful for the videos you already posted. Even if you continue just enjoying living in your brand new home and teaching talented students and touring playing what you teach…we can revisit your vids and be inspired and encouraged. You thought me a lot: i am now a slow jazz base walking cavaquinho player on any chord scheme. Be good!
Great to see and to hear that you are well and have been otherwise occupied. Looking forward to the new content from the coolest, kindest and nicest bass teacher 🤗👍🏼
Thank god for that Rich, I thought you were going to tell us you were ill. Heaven forbid. Thanks for your wonderful videos with your superb calm manner which is a godsend to beginners.
Thanks for being such an awesome part of the bass player community Rich, and all the great content you make! Sounds like some great things going on, and good to hear all is well. As others have mentioned, we'll look forward to any future content if/when YOUR schedule allows! 🎵🎶🎵
I am SO relieved that all is well and that any lack of video content is for good reasons! You deserve all the success that comes your way and if that prevents you posting videos, then so be it! Thank you for all you do.
Well if no one else has said it. Mr brown your sincerity and gracious share of knowledge is appreciated time and time over.. this is why your channel is loved and appreciated.. much respect sir.. a busy soul is a clean soul
Thank you Rich for all you do for the bass community. You are easily one of my top "virtual" bass teachers (along with SBL who I know you have done work with). Even though we play different styles of music, what you have taught me in so valuable and translatable to how I play. I am out in Whitby, so hopefully one day I can thank you in person and maybe do a private lesson if I am so lucky.
Thank you, Rich. Luckily, I found this channel couple months ago. Unlike other youtubers or bass lessons on youtube, your video is really focus on the basic and fundamental skill and knowledge without the fancy editing or video effects, which is perfect for me to concentrate and listen. Thanks again. We are lucky to have you. :)
