Found this: Dieback (Pestalotiopsis): Dieback occurs when fungal diseases affect arborvitae, especially weak or stressed plants. It causes branches and foliage to turn dark brown or black, particularly near the base of the plant. Fungicides, careful pruning, and proper soil moisture and fertilizer management help control dieback1.

I leave my vinca vines in the pots in the garage for the winter, and they don’t freeze for me. I have them for a few years now. I live in Pennsylvania which has much colder winters than you.

I honestly think it’s the spraying. In my area they send out kids who have no idea what they are doing. One of my trees has a little of this as well but I just left it. The rest of the tree looks great so don’t worry. My brother-in-law is a professional arborist and sprayed our maple and all the leaves on the bottom turned brown and he admitted that they looked burned from the chemicals.

Anna, I know how you are feeling. I lost 3 Grimson King maples...looked healthly for 3 years then boom, leaves turned brown and all 3 died in a matter of weeks. So expensive!!! Take a sample and maybe a photo to your county extension ...in meantime, prune out all affected branches, inspect the shrub's main trunk. Keep check of its moisture going forward and make sure when fertilizing that none gets up on the arborvitae. Good Luck.

I agree with you on the trees. I read something that said it could be fertilizer being spread from a cyclone spreader. I noticed too that your grass is nice and green vs the grass by your neighbors trees. So hopefully that's it and there won't be any further damage. Fingers crossed and good luck! 🤞🏻🙂

Also use neem oil Captain Jack's contols black spots good for many difference trees ,roses, shrubs, fruits, many uses. It also kills eggs ,larvae prevents fungal and its for organic gardens. Rust ,powder mildew , spider mites ,white flies... You can get it at lowes hardware. Hope this helps❤

If I remember right your arborvitae were ball and burlap. I believe you just planted them without removing that. Many expert gardners stress the importance of removing all that so the trees don't rot and can root out properly. Might be worth the cost to consult with a arborist. Just a suggestion.
@homeandgardenwithanna.
@homeandgardenwithanna. 4 месяца назад
Some growers and nurseries say to plant a balled-and-burlapped tree as is, including with the wire basket in place and the burlap intact. They're mainly concerned about soil falling from the root ball and tearing off roots. Some sellers will even void warranties if the root ball is disturbed.

Hi Ana. I don’t think is the root rotting. My first impression. 1. Could be a neighbor playing a prank on you. Just saying. It’s funny how they are black on one side. And more than one tree..2. If is an animal. Take moth bolds or shave Irish prong soap around the trees. This will keep any pet or pest away.. I come from a farm family and I see it all. Envy is out there. I see it all. Just my observation y friend. I enjoy your videos very much.

two things you should check with your local extension office and see if they can diagnose the issue and second, if it is a fungus you should have thrown away the clippings in the trash and not in the paper bags as those will be composted by your recycling company and you don't want to spread that to other plants. Sorry you have to go through this.

So sorry to hear about the arborvitae, I know the pain of losing mature garden pieces. As far as snails, I live deep south close to New Orleans and have a snail issue. I put out something from the nursery but not working. My dad used to hide beer cans with a little beer left in them under or behind the plants in the garden.....and voila...the next morning he would pick up the can with a bunch of drunken snails..😂. That is where I am...not a drinker but to buy beer for my garden snails. Crazy but works.

Slugs drive me crazy! 🤪 I use Sluggo…it works, but you have to use it consistently.

It's expensive 😩 I'm having a hard time pulling the trigger. Here in the south we get so much rain anything I use swells up in water and I'm assuming is no longer effective. 🙃 ugh!

Looks like Sooty mould. I would spray eco oil to kill the scale bugs that cause the leaves to go black.

Ugh! Ok. I'll look up that oil. Thank you!

Your theory makes the most sense BUT what about your neighbors trees? Could Ernie have gotten those too? GOOD LUCK 👍

Good Morning!! Oh nooo.. I think it’s a fungal disease. Try spraying it with a fungal spray. Hope you can find out before you lose them. Hope you have a great week !!

Take a cutting to your local garden center. They should be able to tell you what that black is and how to treat it

Do you have an extension office? When I moved from New England to Georgia, the person from the University of Georgia office came out and explained what my trees were and what to do if I have a problem. Good luck.

Mine have done that and I ignored it. They no longer have black. Not sure what it was but doubt it was root rot.

It looks like someone painted them. I’ve never seen that. Did your neighbor spray paint close to the trees? And odd it’s just that side.

@ijustrunb2125 I wish that is what it was. Unfortunately, it's the actual plant turning black.

Looks like a chemical burn but more than one chemical? Like fertilizer and bug spray kind of how we shouldn’t mix bleach with cleaners etc.

Hey Anna. God wants us to pray about everything that concerns us. No matter how small. He knew that we would have times of anxiety so he even told us what to do about it in Philippians four. He says be anxious for nothing but in everything through prayer and supplication with thanksgiving make your request known to God and the peace that passes all understanding will guard your heart and mind. I pray this this scripture every time I am struggling with anxiety about something then I literally picture of myself putting that problem in a basket and laying it at the foot of his throne. Then when my mind wants to be anxious again I tell myself no I’ve already put that at the foot of the Throne. I hope this helps you. Love in Christ

Hi Anna. I saw where if it’s located only on the bottom it could be urine from animals. Otherwise, it is likely a fungus. Fingers crossed!

Is there a male dog that runs loose in your neighborhood, looks to be about the same height on each tree? Could also be fertilizer if you fertilized at the base of each tree right before a rain. Arborvitae don’t really like to be fertilized. If that’s the case they will recover. We have arborvitae across the back of our yard and do nothing to them and they are huge, they just like to be left to do their thing.

Ern fertilized the grass and most likely hit the trees. I'm putting money on that 😆
@cathtf7957

If it was urine, you'd get an odor near the trees. I'd fertilize with something to stimulate roots. Hmmm
