Cool set! I have lucked out and yard saled myself some nice axes. A 60s Scout hatchet, an old German Foresters axe and a couple large felling axes. I paid a reasonable price for a handmade tomahawk. And I have a roofers axe I like throwing and using as a camp axe. Guts fish nicely too. But some of my favorites are some of the 'Gimmick' axes you can pick up cheap at Princess Auto or Canadian Tire or Home Hardware. I found a few in gas stations! Basically just an axe shaped knife. I put wood handles on them and carry them instead of a belt knife. I aquired a couple fiskars in a fire sale, his RV burn in a cooking accident. He hopped in his Jeep and said " No good to me now, you can have it', to all the extraneous gear left on his site. Axes now ride in my pickup, with my Pulaski, bow saw and shovels. Just about to rehang my Pulasky, my buddy used it, badly.
Having the right axe for the job = a life well lived. By the way, the Swedish ä is more or less a Canadian e, as in ”eh”. Gräns = Grens, and Fält = Felt. If you want to go for extra points, the Swedish ”rs” consonant blend sounds like ”rsh”. Grens forsh. Once you get the hang of it, Swedish isn’t that different from English, really. I mention all this because these particular words are good bushcraft words to know, if you ever visit Sweden or Norway. Gränsfors (Grens forsh) means something like ” boundary waterfall”. Fält (Felt) means ”field”. The operations where Helle, Gränsfors Bruk, and Casström are made can all be visited, and are not all that far apart in terms of driving time, unless the snow is deep. And there is one more good bushcraft word; ström (strem) means ”stream”. So if you look on the map and it says forsström, expect some whitewater. 🇸🇪
Nice collection. Still have and use my frankenaxe. Best thing you can do with that Husqvarna head. The axe certainly becomes more important the colder the climate becomes.

Just picked up the Gränsförs Bruk hunters axe. I like the size and balance. finer edge and sleeker profile than a camp axe, and the poll is rounded so that once you get the animal’s hide started, you can strip it away by hitting it like a hammer. I haven’t done it yet, but it is very packable and slicy, so it is on my rucksack/get home bag right now, and lives in the jeep.
That last axe is going to be a big restoration project. Keep us updated. I have about a dozen axes, they are mostly camp axes. I found an all original U.S. military camp axe made in 1943, also a Boy Scout camp axe made around 1956. Everything else is more recent. My newest one is a Brant & Cochran Allagash Cruiser made in Maine. It's a small company that makes high quality axes & I love the name too. I have a couple of Gransfors Bruk axes, a 40 year old Collins felling axe, Chopper One splitter & a few odd axes that I restored & hung. Thanks for showing your collection.
@@Woodswalker1965 Yes it is. It is the Maine wedge design & it came very very sharp. My first day with it I bumped the edge putting the mask on and cut myself. Oops.
Beautiful collection of axes Wade. I, I’m in the camp of knife is the most important tool for survival. With some caveats of course, as either the axe or knife would be fine as your only survival tool. Myself, I go with knife mainly as a personal preference. Some of my favorite axes were found either rusted in the woods, discarded, or thrift store finds.
Nice collection. Suggestion...Council Tool Woodcraft Camp Carver...25° flat grind..easy maintenance, spark a ferro rod on the front, blade is cut out for a close carving grip, hardened hammer poll, similar size and weight but much lower cost than GB's great SFAxe. I have both plus several more. Have fun with your new project axe.
I talked to the Council Tools people about making the carving ace with a shorter, straighter handle, more like a hammer. They showed me a picture of a prototype that they were considering, and then eventually brought it to market. it works better for me than my GB small forest axe, which for me is too long and curved for one hand use, but too short for me to use two handed, being a fairly large, wide person. I love the head and blade on the GB small forest axe, but never found that handle to be a good fit for me. It works for my daughter, though, so I think it just a matter of being a good fit for me- nothing wrong with the axe.
Nice collection Wade. As always thanks for sharing. I do not have a collection. I no longer feel the need to split wood. My best camping axes are East Wing. They have metal handle. They split a lot of wood. I use a chainsaw in some time back to cut firewood from fallen trees around where I used to camp.
Axe, knife and saw Right tool for the right job If I could only have one of the tools with me and I was in the woods it would be my GB small forest axe or outdoor axe I would love to get the GB hand hatchet I feel this would be more in line and easier to replace my knife with while being more versatile ✌️🇺🇸
It would be a great video the fixing of the axe head, great to pick up tips. Most of my axe are Scandinavian axe's, I do have an old English hatchet and a cold steel tomahawk but the rest as I say are Scandinavian, oh I nearly forgot I have a Russian army surplus one to.
Axe is the best all-rounder. I would never go out without all three, though. The right tool for the job, just that the axe is able to do all three tasks.
Nice selection. Suggestion...Council Tool Woodcraft Camp Carver...sharp spine for ferro rod, hardened poll for hammering, head is partly cut out for a choke up grip, bit is 25° flat grind...easy edge maintenance. And it costs much less than GB's great Small Forest axe. I have both. Have fun with your project axe.

That’s an awesome collection of axes buddy, still can’t answer the question between a knife and axe as a one choice option and I’m probably might think a knife is it but I think an axe is the better choice because if I really have to survive an axe is the better choice because if I have to build a shelter it takes less effort,and if I remember correct Mors Kohanski mentioned this also ,thanks for these great vids Wade,take care
Thanks for watching buddy, we think alike on this matter. I would never want to be without an axe, knife or saw but you may be able to get more work done with an axe. This depends on climate and terrain of course.👊🔪🌲
Great video and collection! If I only could pick one of the trio and was walking into the woods for a long period of time it would be the axe for its power and durability. I have a Snow and Neally collection including an old broad axe for hewing. Thanks my friend.
Nice collection! I have 3 different axes from gränsfors bruk but i considering a hultafors åby axe ,looks like a ultimate compromise between the Scandinavian forest axe and the small forest axe
A good parang with three different sharpening grinds is my perfect all rounder, but it all depends on your skill level with each individual tool, I do have about 8 axe's but although I'm safe using one I'm not as confident swinging an axe as I am a parang I suppose thats just down to more experience with the parang. I suppose it also comes down to were you live, an axe in the jungle is never going to beat a machete. I love the gransfors outdoor axe, I always have one on the side of my haversack, this and a decent folding saw is a great companion to your sheath knife, or pocket knife for that matter.

Thanks buddy! I’ve never owned a double bit…maybe one day. I do own a few hardware store mauls, extremely handy for the tough splitting jobs. I didn’t include them in this video because they are very common no name mauls. Thanks for visiting my friend!
