My neighbours here in Beijing took me out for Beijing local dishes! I learned a lot about Beijing food, found a food I'll definitely be having again, as well as a food I definitely WON'T be having EVER AGAIN!

6:05 when he asked you how much you paid for the douzhi, totally felt like my Chinese dad growing up, always making sure I didn't get ripped off. The “aaah" after you told him you spent 3 kuai was 100% an "aaah" of approval and relief. XD ”These neighbours seem like really great people who want the best for you. Looking forward to more content with them in the future.

Your neighbours are like your parents away from home now, they are so hospitable and this is so wholesome, definitely create more content with them! LOL. As a 4th gen overseas Chinese myself I've never had douzhi before so I'm kind of curious how it tastes like, not sure if many Chinese people have ever had this before, since it doesn't seem too common outside of Beijing (speaking based on my past experiences of travelling to China), especially in the southern parts of the country where my ancestors were from and where I've only travelled to before. It is true that Beijing food is not that popular or famous among the entire Chinese community. In my opinion if I had to pinpoint one that has gotten really popular in recent years it would probably be Sichuanese or Hunanese cuisine. (Though that's speaking purely from the standpoint as someone who is of Fujian/Guangdong descent, so Min/Yue cuisine has been around me all the time).

Sausage rolls are pretty popular in the U.S. and are frequently sold at doughnut shops for breakfast, but if we have them with any condiment it's usually yellow mustard. As a ketchup lover, now I'll have to try that with them next time.
@icebaby6714
@icebaby6714 2 года назад
Ketchup is not the best to go with, however it is common to dip sausages or hotdogs in ketchup in Australia, to cover up the strong lamb smell in pork downunder? I had lived in Australia for 10 years and had also been to San Francisco and NYC before, I realized that the pork in the US doesn't have funny lamb smell and there are so many variety of sauces there, nobody will choose ketchup for yummy sausage rolls as it will kill the taste instantly.

In chinese, sausage and intestine is the same character 肠, because sausages are traditionally made with castings and do shape like intestines. 灌 is the motion of filing/stuffing, usually with liquid. 灌肠 in chinese means stuffed sausage, usually stuffed with some kind of carb and/or meat, but it can also mean ennema which is filing your intestines with water. If you run 灌肠 under machine translation, you'll definately get enema instead of stuffed sausages in english, lol~
