@@serpentine8124 I apologised to Guy, because the segment is comparably long for a youtube video. BUT - I find if you give feedback and criticism you should explain WHY - everything else makes no sense. And I also think someone can only truly improve with honesty and it would be a disservice if you just told them "well done". That does not offer any opportunity for growth.

there's the hobby of painting for wargaming , and there's the hobby of painting for painting competitions . i know people who've won gold medals in competitions , but for games they've fully painted nothing larger than a Warcry force and have tons of partially finished larger projects . they can spend a month doing a single 54mm figure for a contest , but painting up 10 identical space marines is impossible for them . so you really can't judge one thing by the standards of the other . not trying to say that pushing yourself to paint at a higher standard is a bad thing , but it can lead to hobby frustration .

@@ernieme101 Too right. I just got back into the hobby last year after a 5 year hiatus and I ended up watching a lot of painting videos before putting brush back in hand. I pushed myself to put more effort into painting up my first 5 man Intercessor squad than I would have put into painting a "tabletop ready" squad in the past. Consequently, as I started on the 2nd unit, I quickly realized that I didn't have the stamina to sustain that level of quality for the remaining minis. Not wanting to paint to a lower standard for the rest and leave the one squad sticking out like a sore thumb, let alone entertain ideas of repainting the finished squad to a lower standard, I shelved the project and haven't gotten back to it since. I feel I have learned my lesson and going forward will focus on doing the minimum to get to table ready with the idea that I can always go back and do more, but even if I don't, at least I have a painted army to play with.

Honestly, the feedback Trovarion gave you is some of the best I've ever heard. To the point, no unnecessary cruelty or sugarcoating. Picking out the things you actually CAN improve on as the next step while still giving credit to the things you already have accomplished. One could hear you felt a bit crushed at 16:52, but if you take Trovarions advice to heart - more shadows/contrast and more controll (less washes) - you can have HUGE success with your next minis if you keep giving it your best. I think your Farseer is a great piece of tabletop-art and the paintjob is very fitting for an HQ model. Be proud.

You also have to consider he's looking at it from the perspective of competition tier. What Guy put out is a soild paintjob that most of us would be very happy with for our own armies. But he's being based against the criteria for a higher tier. The dismissal of washes at that level was really interesting (contrast doesnt surprise me).

Very impressive outcome imo, i have had issues myself because i also have colorblindness and trying to mix and match green and red (and colors that's a combination) is quite difficult. Love the holographic nail flakes, i gotta remember to get some myself to mess around with. I'm curios if you prefer to paint loads of models fast, but maybe not as detailed, or spend loads of time painting few models with a lot more detail. Paint the entire titan with the holographic nail flakes ! :D Also great feedback from Trovarion, i can even use the tips and tricks

Hey guy! I'm also colour blind and use a wet palette :) A big thing that can help with a palette is to be VERY intentional with the placement of the paint on the palette itself. I like to keep the paints I'm using in the same order of bottles, and put the paint on the palette in the same order, so that I can reference its positional relationship for the colours

Also makes me laugh at a Battletech mini I used to have called Pinkie. It was a bright pink like 1980s bright bubble gum pink hover scout. I would get him in my enemy’s drop zone and leave him there to steal points while my mechs fought on. He was so obnoxious it was the best cammo I had especially since the rest of the unit was Ghost Bear white and ice blue

I am not colorblind but I am mainly a fine artist. I use a larger square wet palette and lay my colors out in the same spots every time. Reds always upper left. Blues upper right. White and yellows center. Greens bottom right. Black and brown shades bottom left. Larger wet pallet leaves lots of space between for mixing and creating gradients. I also have a standard way I lay out my round palette. When I see mini painter's palettes the color chaos freaks me out a bit. This might help you remember which colors are which. I do it to avoid muddling my colors as I work. Also, consider taking a photo of the layout and marking up the photo or printing it as a guide and marking the printout with your color names. I will often take a photo of the palette or painting and convert it to black and white to see how I'm doing with contrast. If it doesn't have good highlights and shadows in monotone, it probably doesn't in color either

Granted this is just me and how I do things, but I've actually found wet pallets ability to keep paints useable between sessions to be not all that useful even thought that's the feature people always try to sell them on. The real killer feature for me is that during painting I can mix and tweak blended paint a lot longer and easier during the session. I resisted using them for a while because for the longest time, all people talked about was how you could reuse the same paint for days or something. It wasn't until Squidmar's vids on them that I learned their true purpose and have never looked back.

Would be the one(s) that Reaper Miniatures does during ReaperCon. It isn't uncommon to get to talk with the judges either during or after, doubly so if you're wanting genuine feedback on what was liked, what could have been improved, and things like that. Love how the mini came out, and also how genuine and helpful the opinions given on the paint job were - and how it was worded in a way to help someone work towards their goal.

Great and respectful feedback. You can tell he really just wants to help. Also have to remember that this is your first time really going "hard" on one mini. Still amazing work all around.

I think the best mini painter has given fair critique but he clearly complimented some of the elements. That's high praise from a pro. Well done dude.

I am verry bad at painting and never painted a minis. This was an awesome video, I was engaged from start to finish. It was amazing to see that mini be brought to life and hear the critic judge your mini. Get all those thing he said to heart and keep getting better even if you are an amazing mini painter witch imo you are. Awesome work.

This is great! Thanks for getting grilled for our benefit. I love how Cristoph gives you all the negetive points, and then the positive positive points. Sometimes even when I think I've sorted out all the mould lines, I find then later...staring at me.

One of the other nice things is that the bright red of the gems really helps to draw your eye to those spots on the mini, giving you natural places to rest your vision as it flows across the mini rather than getting it all lost in one mono-color piece. Very well done and I can't wait to learn more from you.

Great video Guy, I love your farseer. I have amassed a nice collection of old and new Eldar, they are the army I will paint to show off my skills rather than rush to finish and that model is one i've been saving for a rainy week. Now i'm very inspired, and thanks for leaving in the annihilation at the end it is very useful for those wanting to reach that standard :)

While I'm not in a position to be #1000, I did want to say your down-to-earth style and unfussiness about "this precise color, followed by that precise color" have brought me hope and joy and inspired me to keep going in the spirit of "the best thing to use is what you have," and while I'm not colorblind I too paint out of a cheap cup palette and will never be a professional-- if it's rewarding, you're doing it right. Whatever your skill-level.

Good job standing there and taking a harsh evaluation with grace. That the road to seeing your blind spots. Your mini is sweet, I used to look at those ethereal elder robes in the 1990’s white dwarf magazines, and couldn’t imagine how people got that look. Also, nice outro music.
