Hi friends!
In this video I wanted to share my top watercolor brushes.
I've been painting with watercolors for about a year now, and have tried many many different brushes. I finally settled into these 6 brushes, which I consider the best watercolor brushes for me.
** List of Brushes: **
1. Leonard, mop, size 6
2. Silver Black Velvet, round, size 12
3. Silver Black Velvet, round, size 8
4. Raphael, round, size 12
5. American Painter, rigger, size 2
6. Museum Emerald, flat, size 3/4
END OF 2017 UPDATE:
My top favorites are the Silver Black Velvets.
Here's the EXACT set I purchased (affiliate link): amzn.to/2A8yVEA
I hope you enjoy this video and learn something new!
There are plenty of good things to come. I'm happy about my progress and I'm really curious to see where I'll be another year from now :D
Thank you for watching, and I'll talk to you soon!
- Liron

Excellent wisdom imparted at about minute 8. An entire philosophy of watercolor tools and supplies squashed in to one and a half sentences. For paint and brushes start cheap, work your way up. For paper, just pay for the best you can afford.

Well Liron I have just bitten the bullet and order a #12 and #8 silver black velvet round from Jackson’s. I live in Australia. When I see use them and others they just look fantastic. I have been wanting them for ages, so I’m so excited. Thank you for the great review and the great work you do. I watch all your work. You are a very good drawer but I love your watercolours so much. Keep them up please.

I am a brush junkie 😊 I love watercolour brushes. Years ago a bought a huge batch of brushes ( a variety) & noticed this week that three of them now cost £70 each ! Art tools are becoming ridiculously expensive.

Liron Yanconsky Hello Liron. Since leaving you my comment about the prices of brushes, I looked yesterday at a brush I bought in 2014 for £29.75 and today it is now priced £79. 85. Absolute daylight robbery.

Great video! I've been wanting a mop brush for a while I just never knew if I'd actually be able to use it. I've been using flat brushes for my washes but I think I'll be trying a mop after seeing this!

Vagabond Painting Cool, let me know how it goes! Flat brushes CAN be superior to mops, if you know how to use them efficiently. But it's worth trying both (:

The firsts brushes i've bought are two synthetic brushes by Raphael soft-aqua.. and they have really surprised me!!! They are imitations of petit gris, and they are really soft!! I'm loving them...!!!

Thank you so much for your sharing and opinions. I’m a beginner. I do start from cheap brushes. But i have problems with the tips. Almost all of my cheap brushes have a broken tips. So I’m looking for a Pro one for my detailed painting. Again, thank you for sharing. 🙏🏻

Thanks Liron, newbie here and trying to find a round brush that isn’t so pointy. Do you still like the Raphael round #12 for a more rounded wash and for bashing around to create foliage texture etc? Looking forward to our annual visit to Israel in the fall. Thanks so much, I have enjoyed your channel and especially the warm up and drills.

After watching this great video, I was doodling with watercolor and I use my number 8 brush and it works well with its natural bristles. Then I compare it to my new number 8 synthetic bristles brush and the point creates a thinner line. I now have a new favorite brush and a brush for a young person to use when they want to paint with me. Thanks for your brush video..I would have just bought a new brush for a thinner line.

Wow not the size brushes that I thought you were using. I use Princeton Neptune Brushes: a #10 Round mostly, a #4 Round, 3/4 inch Square Wash/Flat, 1/2 inch Oval Wash/Cat Tongue, 3/8 inch Filbert Grainer (for grass & fur textures), and a 2 inch Mottler. I have got a question about brushes for you, how often do you have to buy a new set of brushes? Or how long do your brushes last before you have got to buy new ones? I started out 3 years with watercolor painting using some very cheap round brushes by Dynamic Distraction I found on Amazon. Only 2 months ago I upgraded to the Princeton Neptune brushes

I am also testing some brushes at the Moment. My current favourits are a da Vinci series 418 size 6 squirrel brush (it gets a really Nice tip, so you can use IT for bigger washes and some smaller details) and a winsor &netwon professional Water colour sable in pointed round size 5. It holds a Lot of Water and has a really Nice tip for Details. i have also 2 Medium size da vinci Cosmo top mix b brushes. These are ok, but i can Not get the fine Tip. I think its because of the mixture of synthetic and animal hairs.
@LironYan
@LironYan 7 лет назад
Oh, I actually heard great things about the Cosmo tops, but will probably not get them now (: I'm indeed looking for a brush that can both cover large spaces and come to a good point. Not 100% pleased with my Leonard brush. Will check out Da Vinci.
@FreeSpokenOne
@FreeSpokenOne 6 лет назад
It's a relief that Leonard isn't optimal since I can't seem to find them. I'm not willing to spend a fortune on brushes yet so am interested in finding those geared for someone newer to the media and have been looking at a Princeton Neptune #4 quill. I've seen Alvaro Castagnet using mops for his work and as impressive as this (and he is), he also does larger artworks than I'm currently able, yet would hope to work my way into doing. Thanks for sharing your finds!

@rowantheo809
@rowantheo809 6 лет назад
did you buy all the brushes online? because im having a hard time finding good local art supply stores (in the jerusalem area but not only), and would you recommend buying them here or ordering online? (because taxes)
@LironYan
@LironYan 6 лет назад
Yeah I get it - brushes are a bit of a struggle here. I know Arta in Tel-Aviv has quite a few good brushes. BUT here's a better option - you can get three Silver Black Velvet brushes (sizes 12, 8 and one I forgot) off of Amazon. They are actually one of the only ones that ship to Israel. And the price is pretty decent (: I hope this helps! For the large mops / flats - harder to find, and pretty expensive. I got these when I was visiting Paris mostly.

@ClariceAust
@ClariceAust 6 лет назад
How do you feel about the animal cruelty factor? Don't we exploit animals enough in this world today?
@capyboppy
@capyboppy 6 лет назад
Clarice Aust I have an issue with this. I cannot find anything that gives proper information. On where the animal hair is from. Some say it is by products from what is left over from the animal's other uses; other accounts are very vague. I can see as a newbie to watercolours that animal hair is the best. But as a pescatarian it goes through me to think we are using animal hair to further our pleasure. I do have one brush made from pony hair and one from sable that belonged to my late mother. The sable one is very old and tiny, and I have not used it. The pony hair I have only used for brushing eraser shavings off drawing paper; I can't bring myself to use it for painting. Do you know which are the best brands quality wise that are synthetic?
@ClariceAust
@ClariceAust 6 лет назад
capyboppy, I am a beginner myself, but have scoured the Internet over the last couple of years and have seen good things written about Da Vinci 'Cosmotop' brushes and Princeton Neptune. My art teacher has used my No. 12 Roymac, but I'm in Australia and I think Roymac could be an Australian brand. The Da Vinci Cosmotops, I've found the most impressive. God bless you for caring about the welfare of our friends without human voices. (P.s. I have never found anything either on the welfare of the animals from whom the hair for the brushes is taken and I think this in itself is suspicious and must tell you something about a cover-up.)

Some hair falling off in initial use is normal, as long as it stops at some point (: I had that happen with the larger Leonard brush. But if the shape degrades than that's a larger issue.
