A review of the woods that I use in making automata and other wooden designs and those woods that I have stopped using.
Woods include beech, lime, (linden, basswood), American cherry wood, walnut, boxwood, birch ply.
I talk about the strengths of each one and show applications on my automata.

With an interest in Automata and Marionette Puppets I am still trying to work out the best woods to use while being readily available here in New Zealand.

Finding good wood, particularly for carving, is difficult. I increasingly use imported American cherry wood. This works well for both carving and structure parts including gears. It’s a special order here and I have to buy a big plank from the importers.

It would be useful for everyone if I made small tutorials on various movements, but individually. Seeing some of your magnificent creations explained as a whole, in my opinion, is confusing, especially for those who want to learn. An example could be creating a character and each tutorial inserting a movement. It's my idea that if I were in your place I would definitely do it. Thanks anyway for what you do.

Thanks. It is on the CITES list and when buying small quantities it is difficult to get certification so likely to cause issues when exporting. cites.org/eng/news/pr/2003/031111_mahogany.shtml
