MY BIGGEST FOOD PLOT PROBLEM IN 2024

This is My biggest problem that I am having in 2024 to produce my favorite food plots to hold more bucks on my farm this fall. Standing corn is the backbone of my food plot program, I believe most years standing corn will win out against all other plots, especially when interseeded with turnips, radishes, cereal rye, winter wheat, oats, and annual clover. Most years I produce corn in my food plots with little to no problems so long as rainfall is sufficient, this year may be totally different with thousands of LBS of leftover corn still in the field from last fall.

Odd problem to have. Luckily for me every time I grew corn, if the deer hadn’t eaten it I could have picked the twelve stalks that actually grew.

Sounds like another reason farmers do the classic corn/beans rotation. Good luck this year!

Disk plant the corn then cultivate at a later date worked for me last year

That’s a good idea! I thought about doing that but I don’t have a cultivator to go in between the rows of corn. Thanks for watching and good luck with the plots.

If any of the plots are fenced you can bring in cows and turn them loose for a bit to take care of the existing corn. Glad you are doing better!

I put up some hot wire fence and my cows are doing that rate now. I hope it works. I'm still seeing allot of waste or corn left over. I can see where this is a problem and it's my first year after planting corn.

Wes...God Bless, as you know I too am facing some health issues. Because of the acorns and our lower deer population, we have cut back on the size of our food plots. Even saying that we still have had an abundance of corn left from last year. We usually switch our corn and beans each year, and don't get concerned about the volunteer corn in the beans, as it actually gives the deer some cover while walking through the beans. Our greatest challenge was eliminating Mares-tail a recently. Good Luck, Bob

Wow! Just amazing to talk to folks all over the country and see just how little corn was consumed last fall/winter. Bob thanks for the well wishes, I sure hope and pray you continue to heal! Thanks for watching

@diyfoodplotpro Wes have no fear! I got you covered! You should capitalize on option 3. Here's why! You disc that corn under like you were saying and let what germinates soon come back. Ok but broadcast soybeans over the entire thing. A broadcasted plot of corn and soybean mix are an amazing food plot crop. The beans leaves feed early before season! The bean pods + leaves feed early season! The corn feeds in gun season! You can't go wrong here. Then before spring green up mow and disc it all up. And you saved the cost of corn seed this growing season hahaha! You're winning!
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 3 месяца назад
That would be prefect if I only had some corn, my fear is it would be way to thick. In some spots it would for sure work and be a great option. I just can’t decide what I want to do! Thanks for the suggestion I really appreciate it!

Same problem here. I broadcast buckwheat then did a shallow til before rain. Hoping the volunteer corn will germ and i will either brushhog or til again and plant later (mid june). Thoughts? Glad you're back. No other food plot channels are talking about this.
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 3 месяца назад
Thanks buddy, appreciate the support! Bush hogging isn’t going to do much to it….we’re gonna have to either till it under or kill with chemicals….thats the only 2 options that I see for raising corn again this year. Both tillage and chemicals have there pros and cons though. Thanks for watching

1 month follow-up.... the volunteer corn is out of control. I'm gonna spray the field with clethodim and re-plant new corn. My follow up question is about plant back timing.. everything I read online says "6 days" after spraying to plant corn. Here on the video you mention 30 days on the plant back timing... I just wanted to see where you gathered that information from and if you can elaborate. Thanks Wes!
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 2 месяца назад
So there are different brands that have the active ingredient clethodim…on the label of the brand I bought it says 30 Day plant back from spraying to planting corn….but I have heard there is some products out there that only have a 6-7 day plant back period. If your label says 6-7 days, I’d spray it then wait the 7 days and replant the corn. Hopefully that will get rid of enough of the volunteer corn that you will still be able to raise a successful plot. I switched one plot to soybeans, one I ended up disking it 3 different times to get the volunteer corn under control b4 planting corn again.

Praying for ya Wes! I’m betting that wasn’t any fun at all friend. Been through it, and it usually lights a new fire under me to get out and soak up creation. You are lucky to be able to do what ya do brother! I hear ya on that corn problem. You are not alone. We actually still have acorns in May! Never seen it before here in IL. Take care!

My problem is always. No rain. Here in north fl. April is a very dry month. If we are lucky the afternoon rain starts by end of the month. But then the day time temps are in the 90s. So hard growing food plots

Glad you are better. Im have thd same issues. I have my cows in the corn field now but they dont eat all the corn. Im not sure what to do. Plus it wont stop raining here in the Northeast. I have about 3 weeks before i plant the corn so i need to come up with a plan fast. Oh ya a 50lb bag of round up ready corn here has gone up in price. Its almost 300.00 now..

I guess I’d ask, why would you plant corn 2 years in a row anyway? I’m fully expecting another bumper crop of acorns again this year.
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 3 месяца назад
George that is 100% a valid concern….if we have as many white oak acorns as we had last year no matter what we plant it’s gonna be limited use. Thanks for watching!

You don't think starting early and disking every two weeks would have worked? Maybe disking 3 times? Even if you had to plant a later maturing variety to get in enough disking?
@DIYfoodplotpro

Yes sir, that definitely would have worked, the problem is I have a bunch of these plots, and they are spread across the county….takes lots and lots of time just in travel time to drive to them all. Thanks for watching

I’ve got the volunteer corn too. I planted beans. So I take it I should spray with cleth. How much per acre ?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 2 месяца назад
Yes sir, cleth will clean the volunteer corn and any other grass right up for you….it depends on the product you bought. Generally it’s 4-8 oz per acre depending on the product….it should be on the label next to soybeans. Thanks for watching and good luck with the plots!

I’m not up on growing corn…. But couldn’t you just mow what’s growing??
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 3 месяца назад
You could but the problem is, when I plant my corn, I’ve got no way of mowing the last years corn and not hurting my current years corn. Also mowing wouldn’t kill the corn, might set it back, but I don’t think it would get a 100% kill across the field. Thanks for watching

Kinda had the same issue in some plots of mine. One way I found to beat it Is to disk/harrow the field every time it turns green ! Let the field grow up about 4 - 6 inches, then disk it. Repeat ! *Make sure the undesirable doesn't seed ! 👍🏼
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 3 месяца назад
Yep that’s a great option, and that would likely be what I would do if the plots weren’t a long ways from my shop and scattered across the county….but that may be what I end up doing anyway, as that’s the only way to be able to plant corn again. Thanks for watching
