In this video I show the viewers all the steps necessary to produce a sunflower food plot for dove hunting. Fertilizer, seed, ground preparation, pre emergent herbicides, and deer control are things I discuss.

Glad to see someone else advocating for broadcast spreading of sunflowers. Very effective and something anyone with light equipment can do. I played around with a no-till drill this year but regret it. Should have stuck with what works best for us! Good stuff

Yes sir I like the broadcast method, as you said most food plotters don’t have tons of equipment to use. Thanks for the support! I enjoy your videos, I’ve watched several of them!

Old JD 7000 planters are out there, there’s a guy that even converts them to 3-point, 2 rows. A planter will give you some precision to your dove field, you can cultivate, if you wish, etc. keep your eyes open in the farm newspapers.

Hey Scott, I’ve actually got a John Deere 7000 6 row….great little food plot planters. I try to do some plantings with it and some without it on the channel so that folks who don’t have the equipment can still put out food plots. Thanks for watching

I recently broadcasted an upland game bird mix into my perennial plot in the name of science. I spread the seed and then mowed the clover and rye down to cover the seed. 🤞 Not sure what to expect with soybeans, millet, sorghum and sunflower seed not drilled in. I figured the weight of all the chaff+ all the clover that rolled flat onto the ground would play the part of being drilled 1" deep. It's completely covered but I doubt the seedling can keep up with established clover and alfalfa after a mowing 😂 It works for buckwheat and rye

I’m doing this in 5’ tall rye and crimson clover soon. Did it with pure soybeans last year and it worked!

It should work so long as moisture is present, rains right after seeding make all broadcast applications way more successful. Good luck with the plot and thanks for watching

Hopefully you’ll have some doves to come and use your plot. Dove numbers seem to only be a fraction of what they use to be. Be sure to do a September follow up!!

We have had good success here in the past just hunting harvested crop fields, hopefully the sunflowers will bring more in! Yes sir, I’ll absolutely bring y’all some updates throughout the summer and fall. Thanks for watching

Really surprised you didnt lay em in rows where you could keep up the chemical program and knife in nitrogen to em. I knife at hand high and knee high. 60units at hand 90 at knee. I just tried a test strip this week of dual over the top at knee high to see if i could get a second coat of residual on them it burnt the tips like it does on cotton but so far so good might try drop nozzels see how it pans out. Keep up the work brother.

Man it’s Amazing how much we think alike, I was just wondering what the dual would be like over the top as a post emergent. So far it’s pretty clean with only a few scattered pig weeds here and there. Thanks for watching

@DIYfoodplotpro I went with 1 pint to the acre carried in 15gal of water per acre. If you got drop nozzels I think probably be better really sweep it up under em

Hahaha thank you sir, I’m doing good now! This particular farm doesn’t have any rocks….only rocks we really have are gravel bars in the fields. Those are mostly in the creek bottom fields. Thanks for watching

Wes,hope u are staying health....my sunflowers look sick kinda yellowest any suggestions? Great videos keep up the great work 👍
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro Месяц назад
Thanks rich, I am feeling much better! If they are yellow that can be a sign they don’t have enough nitrogen….how much nitrogen did you put down? Also with as much rain we’ve had this spring, super wet soils can also cause yellowing. Herbicide damage also comes to mind, what have you sprayed them with? Thanks for watching

I put 100 pound of 19-19-19 on about a acre.....I sprayed 41 percent genetic round up.....to kill it down end of March and then went back over it April 20 the...I planted May 13th......thanks so much for your help 💪
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro Месяц назад
Rich likely you have a nitrogen deficiency. You put 19 pounds of nitrogen on them, and they need around 100LbS of nitrogen. Get you some urea 46-0-0. 100LBS of 46-0-0 get you 46LBS per acre.

Last week I drilled 14# per acre of black oil sunflower seeds. Before drilling I sprayed gly at 2qt per acre. I’m a little concerned that I did not get a good kill of broadleaf weeds. Is there any herbicide I could spray now as a preamergent?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro Месяц назад
If the sunflowers are not up out of the ground, you can spray dual magnum as a pre emergent if it’s labeled in your state….check the label. It’s important to note that a pre emergent is not going to kill what’s actively growing in the field….only going to stop grasses and some weeds from emerging later. Thanks for watching

In this field, I’ve got 5 scarecrows and 14 motion detectors noise makers….together they have worked extremely well! Thanks for watching. My video protecting tiny plots goes over the scarecrows and the motion detector noise makers.

What are you spraying om them for a pre-emergence ??? Won't that kill the seeds ?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro Месяц назад
I’m spraying dual magnum as the pre emergent. No it won’t kill sunflowers, it’s actually labeled for pre emergent in sunflowers. Dual magnum is mainly a grass pre emergent, but also does well on some small seeded weeds. Thanks for watching

Have you ever tried a drag harrow to cover your seed?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 2 месяца назад
Dusty, I haven’t but I’m sure it would work well! I wanted to cultipack it but I don’t have a cultipacker and didn’t want to drive over every inch of the field to pack it in with the tires, so I opted for the a shallow disking. Thanks for watching

@@DIYfoodplotpro. I used a drag harrow for my replant. It left a lot of exposed seed. (Had to replant, because the deer ate all 2 acres.) Culitipacker does a decent job. I prefer to use a planter. We bought the little 2 row and it does a decent job for corn and sunflowers. My dad destroyed our Covington 🤣.
