INFO: My Bloody Valentine is an Irish-English rock band formed in Dublin in 83. They’re well-known for being one of the pioneering bands of the shoegaze and dream-pop genres, known for their heavy use of distortion, reverb and tremolo manipulation. With the release of their third EP You Made Me Realise in 88, vocalist and guitarist Kevin Shields used these sound manipulations on his guitar to create an atmospheric and fleeting soundscape. Coupled with Shield’s and bandmate Bilinda Butcher’s soothing vocals, their sound became the musical equivalent of a daydream. Visceral and peaceful, but also blurry and surreal. But it wasn’t always like that. Before they released You Made Me Realize and not to mention Loveless and their newer work, the still growing band took their inspiration from post-punk bands like Joy Division and The Cramps and others. Offering a sound that was similar to their contemporaries. But since they lacked a sense of identity they were often panned by critics and received little attention to begin with. But from that place, they eventually became one of the most influential bands of all time.

More than anything this video shows how bands in this era were given time and usually money to work on their art and to evolve their sound. They were supported and nurtured by labels who ferociously loved music and invested in the bands because they had something even if that something wasn't immediately apparent. How many years did it take for them to become the My Bloody Valentine that we consider My Bloody Valentine? And those who invested their time, money, faith, well it resulted in Loveless. And I am very glad for that

Easily the most sonically ferocious band I've ever seen live. During the middle section of "You Made Me realise" people were leaving the hall, throwing up, falling over, committing suicide, committing murder, riding unicycles, undressing with farmyard animals etc etc. I myself leaned into it and survived thankfully because I was using earplugs. I never looked into My Bloody Valentine when I was younger because I kept getting them confused with Bullet For My Valentine, and I hate emo/screamo music. Then my friend played Loveless for me in college and that's when I realized I'd been thinking of a completely different band. MBV is now one of my favorite groups specifically because of that album.

oh my god i understand what kevin meant by the sensory deprivatiom high - everybody was so blissfully elated right after the philly 7/30/18 show. mbv had ended the night using the holocaust section. & before their actual performance i remember feeling so swallowed up by this crowd anxiety. but leaving, i just felt so immersed with the environment, & that same crowd as we streamed out. & everybody's dialogue was the same, along the lines of "holy shit it was amazing/ive never experienced a show like that". all riding the same collective high... i know i sound histrionic but FUCKK this video brought me back lol

Having a guitar per tuning actually makes sense. Many alternate tunings put a lot of stress on the guitar neck due to higher string tension, and switching between tunings can lead to the guitar going rapidly out of tune as the neck adjusts, or can even damage the neck permanently. Sonic Youth became known early on for bringing large numbers of guitars to their live shows, and they were a huge influence on MBV.

there's an issue there, as much as I love them, their current year fanbase are the same people they railed against in the 80s. only difference is a piercing there, a mohawk with maybe 1 out 10. no difference. if you look at them in that 80s picture of them in suits with dollars signs it was a foretelling of irony. same problem. good band though.

Lie Likes Music It always seems like bands or music enthusiasts who know about them to me. I see what you mean, but people definitely seem to love Kevin Shields interpretation of Shoegaze. I’ve listened to all kinds of Shoegaze bands, and many don’t even come close to the MBV sound, even when they’re trying to copy them. They’re a very unique band.
@thurstonmurru
@thurstonmurru 2 года назад
Kevin Shields having multiple guitars for different tunings can be explained by a setup issue: every time you tune your guitar to a different tuning chances are it’s gonna need a new setup to accommodate the new tension and height of the strings: the neck can bend and the strings could not vibrate freely. In guitars like a Jazzmaster (with a tremolo bridge) it’s crucial to have it set up the right way for the best sound. That said, setting up a guitar can take time (the wood would also need some time to settle for the new tension) so I can see how he can’t be arsed with doing that every time.

I hope to get the 33 1/3 book on mbv's album loveless for Christmas. It has been an album that has just fascinated me. Chaotic, distorted, and yet beautiful. It was an album that defined both the genre of shoegaze and the 90s itself. An album that stood out among giant albums that were released both during and after 1991. An album that both defined a bands career and shrouded them in mystery as they faded away for nearly 2 decades with only their initial releases to act as reference points to their greatness. MBV got me into shoegaze and almost no other band out there exists on the same plane as they do, especially in the genre of shoegaze.

Some of those books are really good. I got the 33 1/3 about Piper At The gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd. Tons of insider notes that i would never discover if i'd just searched the web. In terms of their greatness, i'm still very new to the genre. But it sure looks like they're the go-to band in terms of dream-pop and shoegaze. Do you know any new shoegaze bands from the 2010s? This is more dream-pop, but still pretty dope song from last year ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-46UNE3WQIoM.html

In fact it is not just reverb, but reverse reverb which takes away the attack of the guitar adding to the feeling of the guitar not sounding as a guitar

Pointless. There is nothing to understand. Kristian (hilarious real name) is and remains a pretentious hack. Weak minds are impressed by "epic" nonsense. Edgelords wet their pants at how "forbidden" it is to listen to a nazi and a murderer. His fans *define* the exact shallow nature they would like to think they are "above". Stravinskij was a fascist too, but at least he wrote some good tunes.

Tremelo/Whammy bars will de-tune a guitar crazy fast. Kevin would have retune his guitar after every song. Between that and wildly different tunings, having separate guitars was probably necessary.

They don't do "something called The Holocaust before or after You Made Me Realise." It's an integral part of the track. It's a noise interlude prior to the final verse and chorus, as featured on the recorded version, but they stretch it out when playing live, and have been doing so for decades. I think the longest version I heard was at Brixton Academy in 1992-ish (Rollercoaster tour), which probably clocked in at around 25 minutes. Also, it's 'The Holocaust section' (not that I think the band have ever called it that). Hope this helps.

A video essay on Masaki Batoh &/or Ghost (the Japanese psychedelic band). Truly mesmerizing music. Also, maybe consider indie record label primers (like Touch & Go, Kranky, Drag City, Mo' Wax, Ninja Tune, etc.). Or better yet just keep doing what your doing, mang. After this video & the Ween one, it's all gravy Peace & Jah Bless

Great video, but I think you really did not touch on enough on Loveless, that album has so many songs that leaves you feeling a way that I can’t describe. You should have touched on a lot on the songs on that album.

Well I think the video’s about how the sound changed, not necessarily how loveless is an undeniable classic - I think we all understand that, it’s been covered enough. This video is more about everything else about them, for that’s what most people don’t know enough about. I think your opinion is fair, however, he could have covered a bit more.

be the first of the video essay series to talk about cocteau twins! they are the deepest and most interesting of the 80s - early 90d dream pop groups and the internet NEEDS it. Robert Smith called it the most romantic sound he's ever heard. what more do you need to hear? :p
