Bro! I have been researching and RU-vid-ing (1 year +) to get the right rig! .... I watched you video and it was so clear that I just finished building my rig almost 1:1 and it is soooooo great. Sometimes I just set it up and look at it for hours, it looks like some serious Hollywood Spielberg stuff ...... Seriously, thank you for this great video and although all of the extra gear for my 6K put a nice dent in my wallet I am a happy camper now. Next piece of gear will be the Easyrig Minimax. Thanks Bro

I wish Tilta wasn't so proprietary... I have the Tilta cage and the Tilta baseplate, but rather than have another plate (Manfrotto in your case) under the baseplate, I wanted to keep the extra bulk/weight off the rig, so I bought the Tilta dovetail plate that the baseplate can slide onto. Yeah, I know that's what Tilta wants you to do, so I'm a sucker I guess, but I really just couldn't stomach attaching a quick release plate to another quick release plate... so I shelled out for the stupid expensive dovetail. 😅 May even get a second one if I ever find myself need to switch between tripod and shoulder mount a lot. Lame... haha Probably could have gone a different route, but I thought about it a lot, researching as much as possible, and had at least some reason for every decision, but yeah... this is just the corner I ended up purchasing myself into. Not gonna kick myself, there is only so much time and effort I can put into making things perfect, eventually ya just gotta try something.

@edwardleefilms 3 года назад
I would honestly have to say the a7siii right now. It is superior in pretty much all categories. Although the BM color science is amazing and definitely gives that filmic cinematic look you're going for. I think if you plan on using one camera for youtube, client work, some photography, etc, Id get the Sony. If you are looking to rig out a mini cinema camera for more video production, id save the extra cash for parts and get the BMPCC 6K

Great setup and video Edward. Thanks. A quick question, you mention that the Focus Side handle allows you to focus wirelessly but Tilta state clearly that this side handle needs a wired connection to the Nano motor. Can you confirm that you power the nano from the handle vie a wired connection? I assume, when you mentioned focusing wirelessly, you were talking about the wooden Nano controller that you mount on the right side of the cage. Also, I assume if you’re using a T5 SSD that you’re not using the run/stop recording features of the side handle. Is that right? Thanks so much.
@edwardleefilms
@edwardleefilms 2 года назад
Hey there, this is a great question and comment. You are absolutely right, the motor itself needs to be plugged into the side handle. The wooden piece is what is wireless (can be used with a monitor off camera). And I am not using the recording button on the handle

Curious why you use the side focus and the tilts focus wheel ? And a v mount you can power it with the side focus of you have the right battery 🔋
@edwardleefilms
@edwardleefilms 3 года назад
Because sometimes depending on the angle I hold the camera, it's more comfortable to pull focus on left or right side. Also, the tilta side focus needs a battery in it in order to not have a hollow empty spot so I figured I would just power stuff from there too. But definitely considering powering everything from the V-mount. Thanks for the comment!

Been waiting for this video champ! Just curious... on one of your replies on IG, you said that the whole setup costs around $4-5k, + lens and the BMPC 6K we have a round number of $10k i guess +/- and I’m wondering, wouldn’t it be better to get a used Red Raven Kit?
@edwardleefilms
@edwardleefilms 3 года назад
Honestly super valid question. I think its because I haven't really ventured into RED, C300, FX9 territory yet so this is sort of me stepping into cinema with this rig. Eventually, I would love to get into an upper end cinema camera
@shawnconvey7323
@shawnconvey7323 3 года назад
Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are referencing, but I think your math is pretty off P6k body = $2k, 18-35 $600, Tilta Cage kit $500, Monitor $600, IndiePro V-mount plate $150 is >$4k build with some cheap batts. BUT most EVERYTHING on that list minus the battery you would need on any RED build as well (cage, battery, monitor, lenses) so not only is your build math off but your thinking about costs is maybe a bit off as well... (I realize you said used kit but you can say the same with a used P6k kit and buy 3 used BMD cameras for one Red) ...

Very nice rig you have here! Just few questions, why you’re not using your vmount battery to power the small hd? And why having 2 follow focus?
@edwardleefilms
@edwardleefilms 3 года назад
Thanks! Honestly, I just haven't got around to ordering the proper cable for the v-mount to smallhd micro hdmi, but definitely should do that. I have 2 follow focus though because sometimes depending on how I hold the camera, I prefer to use left or right hand to focus. The side handle can be a bit awkward sometimes if I am doing handheld filmmaking

@standardracer
@standardracer 3 года назад
It's actually a good thing Edward isn't powering everything from the V-Mount battery! You can kill the HDMI port because the BMPCC doesn't seem to have protection against a ground power loop. Ground power loops can happen with any electronics. It will happen to the BMPCC when camera and monitor are POWERED from the same source, and they're also CONNECTED via the HDMI cable. The only way to ensure it doesn't happen is to run the monitor and device from separate power sources. The UMP also has this issue. There are quite a few posts on the Internet about this.
@dothefilmTV

you should power all with the v mount more cables but better battery management
@edwardleefilms

Isn't the focus handle sufficient to control the follow focus !? and if the wireless follow focus is going to be mounted on the rails, wouldn't it be cheaper to use manual follow focus instead !? To each its own, I guess. But if I were in the similar position, I would just be happy to use Focus motor connected with Focus handle.

hey buddy, do you need the nucleus nano if you have the title side focus handle?
@edwardleefilms
@edwardleefilms 3 года назад
Great question! You will still need the nano because the side handle has the focus wheel but you need the actual motor that mounts to the lens and I think that only comes as a kit with the nano

May I know how exactly it works with both batteries ( the one in the back and the one in the side handle) and if you could potentially run the monitor off one of these batteries to save some weight? Thank you for any feedback!
@shawnconvey7323
@shawnconvey7323 3 года назад
I was also curious about all the batteries... I sometimes use the NPF and other times use the V-mount and occasionally use the Vmount for just the monitor and the NPF for the rest of them but having 2 NPF's AND a V-mount seems like there are more batts than things to power :-D
@edwardleefilms
@edwardleefilms 3 года назад
@@shawnconvey7323 Yes good questions! So the side handle needs a battery in it or else it will just be hollow. In order for it to be like a grip, it needs a battery in it (even if you're not using it for power). However the V-Mount is probably not necessary. With just the side handle, you can power both the focus motor and the camera. The V-mount could also power the SmallHD monitor but you would need the specific cables. The real reason I have the v-mount is just for the added weight to even out the rig. But its not totally necessary.

Question! How did you equip your tilta grip onto your cage? I have the same grip, same dovetail base, but there's no where on my small rig cage to attach it. I don't really understand, do I need a different attachment other than the dovetail?

I never had enough torque from the npf970 to properly move the nano motors. Maybe because your npf isn't powering the camera and used only for the nano? Even though I had problems with it also when powering it from a d-tap (vlock that also powered the camera) :/
@edwardleefilms

Oh really? That odd, with my Sigma 18-35, I never had problems. I sometimes use just the side handle to power both the camera and the nano motor and it works perfect for me!

How did you take the covers off? Just pulled them off ? Debating if I should do that as well
@edwardleefilms
@edwardleefilms 3 года назад
You just need to take some needle nose pliers and grip the base or stem of the cover. Then just pull it out with a little force. Dont worry about breaking them because they do pop back in if you need it too. But pliers and a good grip are crucial.
