In this video I review my Boston Marathon 2024
I made a video previewing my Boston Marathon 2024 and all the things that happened before I left Ireland. I this video I go through what happened after I landed in Boston, my preparations in the run up to the race, or the race up to the riun, as well as the Boston Marathon 2024 itself.

Hello from Wellesley College! It’s one of my favorite traditions at school, I screamed for about 3 hours straight until I lost my voice 😂. Always inspiring to see the runners and I’m glad we could cheer you on :)

Apologies. I thought I replied earlier. I was so thrilled to see all the students out (I teach design in the Technological University Dublin). I got such a buzz as I ran along and am grateful to all you and your colleagues for screaming your heads off. I would love to hear a scream off with Wellesley on one side of the road and Boston College on the other! Very best wishes for your studies.

Awww, Barry, thank you for helping me relive my Boston from three days ago, my 12th finish. I think you may have been one corral in front of me. I just love your thoughtful, reflective, sympathetic recap of what this is all about. Stryd power on the uphills will be high, making it really easy to hold targets and do so comfortably. On the downhills it is very difficult to hold power, but you know the pace is fine. I now tend to just forward lean and let my body carry me. And I practice this is training frequently. Now that I trust the Nike airpods in the AlphaFly / Tempo Next% they REALLY help on the downhills. Which I wear exclusively on my downhill runs, and my quads never feel bad afterwards or the next day. I make my attempt to get a bib for Boston 2025 in less than 4 weeks. Really appreciate the journey you took us on, and I hope I have need to want to watch this again in April 2025!

Barry, I enjoyed listening to your Boston experience. Again, congratulations and you deserved it. It was an unusually hot day apparently which made it more challenging but also made it more memorable. Cheers! You made an observation about Stryd in your video that you were going too fast. Since I got Stryd I didn't yet follow a Stryd plan but I am checking out the suggested Watts on the races and it looks like I need to get significantly better in downhill running because I find it quite challenging to keep up to the recommended watts. I wish Stryd had a Garmin PacePro like system where it broke down the race into segments of different watts. What is next? London or Tokyo?
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner 3 месяца назад
Tolunay. I’m going to have to practice a little more with Stryd in races. My next two marathons are decided. Dingle in Ireland being one that will suit Stryd. I’m hoping to take my drone and a variety of cameras. Dingle is very beautiful. In an ideal world I would run Tokyo and then London. I lived in London for seven or so very happy years. The race runs on one of the streets I lived on. My plan was to do it last but who knows. I am lucky to have visited Tokyo London and Sydney and would love to run them all. My guess is Sydney will be added before I complete the six. Nice to always have goals…

Great recap Barry, good to see you enjoying it, sometimes we focus on times too much. Interested to hear your stryd comments, I think that's down to your power refresh, personally I do every 10 seconds. I hope one day to qualify myself and like you I regret not doing the 5k the day before NY. Did Chicago last year, no urinals there, scraped into my pen after queuing so long. Out of interest is there anything you would have done differently? Doesn't sound like it.
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner 4 месяца назад
I wouldn’t change a thing, well nothing I can think of. Almost 9% of runners visited the medical tents and 126 were taken to hospital (38 still in hospital, thankfully none critical) 980 didn’t finish. So I am happy with the choices I made. The toilet queues in Chicago are a disgrace. Hence why so many men are peeing under the first underpass.

Few queries: a) if you run without phone then the digital key would be hard to use. How would one get in the hotel? b) how many influencers get bib via brands? (Some of us cannot get in but some get in easy. Great you qualified.) c) adidas had evo at the expo. Did you try? Thoughts on new shoes like Puma elite 3? Happy with Edge? d) did you go for any shakeouts. Hope everyone knew your top channel. Thanks.

Rajkumar. Hello on another beautiful Boston morning. I contemplated not running with the phone. I bought another camera and was thinking of using it instead. I am glad I brought the phone. The Hotel gives people physical cards if they need them and I could have carried one in my hat, with my ID and Dude wipes. My hat has a zip compartment. I don't know how many influencers got bibs via brands. There was some controversy online. You can get in by using a travel operator, at least you can from overseas. There are also charity entries. I did not go to the Expo to see the Evo. Funnily enough a man ran by me in a pair. He was not going very fast, nor would I have if I was in them. I have not seen the Elite 3. I have enough shoes for the moment! Delighted with the Edge, Sky and Alphafly 3. I did not do any shakeouts. I loved the Boston 5k. The rest of the time I stayed put and made videos!

It was way hotter than my training. I heard a number of local runners discussing this also. Apparently 9% of runners ended up in the medical tent and 136 in hospital, over 900 did not finish. My start time was 10:50 so I ran over the midday peak. I typically lose 1kg per hour of summer running in Dublin. But do not feel thirsty or drink excessively. Having said all of that, I wouldn't change a thing

@@OldManRunner Go to Kenya for 3 weeks before a hot weather race or Thailand. Same effect 👍🏻. I grow up in Kenya but have not visited in 45 years.. I really want to do the 2 weeks high altitude training.. Maybe before Valencia?

It helps with getting the body in tune for the early journey to the marathon start and with all the eating and digestive stuff. Then when I fly back the time differential and jet lag doesn't kill me...flew last night and back at work today

Maybe it's me but the part before the race sounds like an administrative nightmare.. 😂

In theory yes. In practice the BAA deserve huge credit for making it all so very simple in practice.

Congratulaions! The Boston Marathon is my runningdream (that will never happen). But can we talk about the view out of the hotel? Wow! The funny thing is - that container ship in the back is the Evergreen, who famously wrecked at and clogged the Suez Canal in 2021.

Thanks! I love ships, strolled down the quayside to have a look at it. Watched a few others loading and unloading, wondering where all the cargo was coming from and going to...

@@OldManRunner What amazes me is the sheer size of those things. In your video you could see an already big ship drive towards the bridge. But compare that with the Evergreen... Unbelievable how these things are able to float.

I know. I am lucky to have travelled from the UK to Malaysia by ship and back and forth and to Jamaica a couple of times, and two of my uncles were marine engineers...so yes the hotel was perfect for me...

No pressure cooker explosions this time? Ok I'm not interested then, hopefully they'll bring it back next year.
