On-Running CloudNeo End of Life Review: Don't buy a pair

In this video I review the On Running Cloudneo after 300km (186.41 miles) of running
I bought these shoes because I am interested in a few things.
In the initial running review video I wanted to delve into those aspects of the shoe and try to answer
Is it sustainable?
Does the subscription package work and represent value?
And of course, find out what it is like to run in
In simple terms, it is sustainable, it is super to run in and a great show, but the subscription model makes no financial sense for the consumer. In short, as the title says, don't buy a pair
As always there are chapter markers below so you can skip ahead to the parts that interest you

What a racket. I've never bought an On shoe and your review reinforces why I never will.

The shoe is good...but the way they go about selling it really isn't. Shame really

Pulling no punches! Good on you for calling it like it is, Barry. Sustainability doesn't need to be this inflexible. What On running shoes would you recommend to someone who doesn't have any and is looking to try the brand?
@bev9708
@bev9708 Месяц назад
IF you like an exaggerated feeling of drop, then try the Cloudsurfer 7, probably their most popular shoe, but personally i didn't like it as the drop feels a lot more than the 8mm on paper. For a high-stack, I enjoyed the Cloudmonster, for me very high cushion which is a little firmer for those looooong runs, BUT the outsole leaves a lot to be desired imho, it wears quickly!! Reviewers certainly seem to prefer the new Cloudeclipse though which they say is softer. Truly Bartek, I don't think anything from ON is gonna even remotely compare to the Superblast!!! Hope you're doing well Bartek... thinking of you!!!🙋‍♀

@@bev9708 thanks Bev, will take all those into consideration ... once I'm actually running again 💪 ... lots of walking atm (with a few strides and some drills here and there) ... I have a week and a half left of treatment, so very glad that it's nearly done 🫶 ... but it will be at least 3 months of waiting for inflammation to go down before I get rescanned = and that will require a lot of patience 💪

Bartek. great to hear from you. I have enjoyed lots of On shoes and clothing. Despite the cloud references they tend to ride firm. I like the Cloudmonster, but it is not as soft as the Gel Nimbus or Invincibles of this world. I have not tried the Eclipse series but would be tempted. To be honest I really love the CloudNeo...

Thanks for revisiting this, I remember your original video on the shoes, I thought that you could keep them for 6 months max then send them back, and that if they were in bad shape before that, they would replace them. Cost wise I guess they don't make sense, unless they are your primary shoes. Anyway, you're not the only one who made an expensive mistake. I recently bought the adidas Prime x Strung and I think I have the same issue as you had, the left shoe feels like it's tilting to the outside and it makes it really unstable to run in. Can't win them all Barry 😂
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner Месяц назад
If only we could! I have had some great shoes from On and some great apparel so the odd no so good experience I can live with.. Really curious about the Prime X Strung. A few people said the same thing and I am wondering what caused it, but I sent mine back before I could investigate. I wonder did the rods shift internally in the sole?

That's very disappointing from On that they wouldn't let you keep the shoe. Excellent insights and review. I think the subscription model on running shoes is flawed and unsustainable. Pun intended. There are so many shoes to choose from and more and more releasing daily so it is difficult as a running shoe consumer to be loyal to a particular shoe for any length of time. Especially when you have huge sales cropping up throughout the year that allows you to purchase 'better' shoes at a cheaper price.
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner Месяц назад
Yes. I love the shoe and would happily buy it, even at a slightly inflated price compared to other shoes. I can see no reason why it is on a subscription model.

I was an early adopter of these and one of the first in the UK to get them, sent them back as they were horrible to run in. Liked the eco credentials but such a hard ride, used them for walking in the end and cancelled my subscription. I'd try a pair with the Cloud Tec Phase so like a Cloud Surfer 7 sole.
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner Месяц назад
I could tolerate the hard ride initially and liked the rocker feel and lightness, but when I got injured the hard ride made them impossible to run in...they have just launched another more Cyclon shoe that may have a softer feel, but it's on subscription and once bitten twice shy for me...

Very sad to hear/watch, On as a company they are doing a lot of things right in the running world , they should sell it at an slightly inflated price and include a self paid bag which when done you can just send it back when you want like the SURI toothbrushes) , sounds like a mis communication / someone not on the ball at boardroom level .. unless its just a tick in the box exersize to say look what we have done. I would like to think not. Thanks for the honest review.

Agree 100%. More carrot and less stick if you are really into sustainability...People will pay a little extra for organic food and free range eggs etc.I think if On did that there would be more uptake and then more people would buy the shoes and the circular cycle could really kick off. For now the shoe is buried down as an afterthought on the On site...

This is the first time I've heard of a subscription shoe. I like the concept but I can see that's it's a minimum 6 month commitment, so €180 is a big wedge for a shoe you never own. In nikes current sale you can pickup vaporfly3s for €10 more. Personally I'd probably pay them €10 for a 9 month subscription, but wouldn't go much beyond that when you consider how easy it is to get shoes on discount a few months after launch.
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner Месяц назад
Atreyu used to do a subscription model and abandoned it for their shoes, but they were really cheap...and still are if you live in the US. And yes Nike are having another summer sale with 25% off at the moment...
@TolunayOrkun
@TolunayOrkun Месяц назад
I hope they do not charge you for sending the shoe back sawed in halves. Subscription model is hard to make it work. The only other company that attempted subscription model is Atreyu for their base model and while theirs were more user friendly (no monthly fees and you could skip a delivery if your shoes were lightly use) it was not sustainable for the company when they produced the shoes and users didn't consume as much as they expected. I guess with monthly "lease" model, On tried to avoid that situation but then it becomes more costly for the user than buying them outright (if they can of course)
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner Месяц назад
I have several Atreyu shoes and I like that they concentrate on bringing value to customers, at least in this particular shoe On seem to be trying the opposite approach...

Ha! I am not sure what will happen when they open the bag...but my logic is that they will be chopping it up anyway...

OH my gosh that's PATHETIC!!! I don't see anything at all sustainable in a shoe that is past its prime at 200km. I have very little experience with ON shoes but the little I have is that yes the outsole wears way too quickly ... there are SO many great shoes out there to choose from and PLENTY which both last for well over 1000km AND feel great to run in too, (that from my own experience with them) and long-wearing seems far more sustainable to me!! I admit however that me personally, I do seem to be far kinder to my shoes than most.
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner Месяц назад
I get that it may wear more quickly. But charge the shoe at a sustainable price...The general wear of On shoes has improved, particularly the uppers, but the outsoles wear off really quickly...I am hard on most shoes...
