To me work ethic is totally based on the situation that you are in. If you don't have pressure early in life, then you have a more laid back kind of attitude and really don't care about working hard. But if you are put into a situation that requires you to work hard, or you were raised to be more independent, then you will be much more likely to choose hard work. I also think that passion plays a huge role in work ethic. If you love your work then you really aren't working, you are doing something that you love. And if you hate it, then you will be way more likely to quit or be super unmotivated to do something in life.

John, I am of the firm opinion that everyone's behavioral attributes are based on nature AND nurture. Pitting them against each other is a fruitless excercise. Life is complex, people are complex. You can't point at one thing and say "Aha! this is the reason!"

William Webb I agree, it's a mixture of the two. Training yourself to be disciplined and work hard is easier done when young so it's easy to see why people think it could be a natural thing. Also it's very much about making the decision and removing distractions from your life.

On the work ethic thing. As someone who is so prone to being a lazy poop butt, I do not think work ethic is genetic! I think it takes different motivations for different people to become hard working. For me I need a steady stream of new motivating ideas to keep myself off my ass. However, the two most consistent things have been dedicating myself to music and vlogging. Ever since I decided that"s what I really care about it, I can only couch potato for so long until I get jittery. And trust me, it was not always like that.

I'm about the nurture over nature, work ethic is based on experience around you, it's something you develop within your bounds of enviroment. But getting to top of your game opens up the next level of the game. You unlock the new enviroment

I don't believe that people are born with a predestined set amount of work ethic, but I do believe that some people are born with more of a "go getter" personality. Everyone has different chemical balances/imbalances in their brain and I do believe that it does in fact play a part in personality. On the other side of the spectrum I also believe that a hard work ethic can be learned based on circumstances and what not.
@EduardoLopez-ei4vd

I think that work ethic is like a muscle, and is partly from where you come from and how are raised. But regardless there's no excuse to not work hard. You must develop work ethic

I think u can for the most part control how much effort you put into something but i think it also comes down to how driven you are or how passionate you are for whatever your doing. and it probably can be different for people based on their parents drive / impact on that persons mind.

I'm studying psychology and we talked about what influences motivation a bit. There's a thing called the biopsychosocial approach that suggests that a combination of factors influence this. Bio is your physical biology of some gene combinations can give an increased likelihood for strong will power. psycho is you actual mental state. Like are you motivated in the first place to do whatever it is you're trying to. And social is how the people and interactions around you influence this characteristic. This includes how your parents raised you. I don't know if this makes sense but I hope it helps.

I heard this on a podcast called Millenial once and I think about it often. The consequences of failure directly correlate with work ethic. So the greater the consequences of failure, the harder you work. I constantly think about this. But I also come from a family of extremely hard workers and I love the daily grind. Interesting topic though!

I think that being able to hustle and do your own thing is a mixture between how you were raised, and your mindset as an adult. I know lots of things I wanna do with my life, and I'm doing it, but it's difficult for me to do. I think it's because growing up, despite growing up in a poor family, my parents still managed to spoil me. I think if my parents were harder on me, it would've been easier for me to hustle now, at the age of 29, and become more successful. So I think both parties play a big role.
@karlijn9669

We actually talked a bit about this topic at University. The ideal situation for a society (this is focussed on school and education in the Netherlands) is a meritocracy. Which means that everyone has the opportunity to use their talents, work hard and get a good degree at school. So everyone get's the same chances. And when they have a good degree it means that they get a better paid job, or that you have a higher chance of getting a job (this is it about what is going on in the Netherlands). When you read this you'll probably think that it's a good idea and fair. But when you think about it, not everyone has the same brain capacity to study hard or to even have a talent for studying and learning new things. So they actually don't get the same chances as people who HAVE the capacity to study hard and understand things quick. It's even a hereditary factor. Of course every person most likely has a talent for something, but it isn't realistic to think that everyone has the same opportunities. You need a certain brain capacity to be good at learning new things and understanding how certain things work. I'm not saying that the ability to work hard is a destined thing, but I do believe that not everyone has the same capacity's. Of course I can be totally in the wrong with this, but I just wanted to put it out here. :)!

I definitely think certain people are born with a certain work ethic from the get-go. But that doesn't mean that it's something that can't be developed. There are people who are naturally very driven, and there are equally as many people who maybe aren't as "driven", yet the concept of hard work isn't something that's foreign to them. I hope that makes sense... that's kind of a tough thought to formulate. Awesome vlog John, as usual!

For me, the amount of hard work I can do is greatly greatly diminished by the fact that I have to get up and go to a boring job every day of my life. I dont enjoy my job that much , I dont hate it but its not great, but I dont have time to focus on how to make my situation better because as soon as I get home from work , I am 100% mentally drained and I cannot engage in anything that requires hard work. This has been my dillema for at least 10 years now, I dont see how I can change my situation other than working hard on a project but I dont even have the mental power to start doing any of it because my job is already so hard and boring. The only future I can realisticly see for my self is to keep working to pay the bills until I die, any other futur I see for my self seems like a dream that will never happen ( unless I make it happen but for that requires time and effort which I cannot get no matter how hard I try ). People keep telling me I didnt try hard enough , didnt put enough effort in it, but I really cannot see how I could do more than what I already have to do to survive.

Its really interesting that you brought up work ethic, because thats a internal battle i struggle with. I just look at people like you John or anyone with great work ethic in my family and i just dont get it. I can't see myself working that hard and working 8 hours a day and being happy about it. Not about the work in particular, but just being happy that thats my life. 9-5 job 7 days a week. I just couldnt. Even a job i dont hate. I think your parents and life situations can definitely influence your work ethic and its something you can work on, but i feel there are some people with a natural high work ethic and something special to them that they dont hate it? I guess? For me its like, imagine the laziest you ever been. Like just got home from 12 hour shift with a broken leg. That's almost how i feel before doing anything productive, but as soon as i start i usually burn through things and its not so bad, but after a certain time i just can't be bothered with working at all. No i'm not depressed, but i believe those are habits that i have because of my past with depression. Too much in my head not enough in the moment is pretty much me. If i had a natural high work ethic i just know i could do so much and i look around everywhere to building a healthy work ethic, but nothing really works. Each new day is just so void of energy. Energy to do anything productive at least.
@craigstanley6530
@craigstanley6530 7 лет назад
I would say a hard work ethic is not predestined. I feel that for some people the experiences they face growing up trying to understand this crazy ride called life either motivates them and encourages them to push forward an work hard, or the experience pushes them backwards into a neutral state to fall victim to society's standards of going to school getting a job going to college and just working for a pay check in a 9-5 they don't enjoy everyday. Hard work comes from a choice and a call to action. There is no limit to hard work except the limit you and the people around you put on each other. You are the sum of the 5 people you hang around most. If they aren't motivated, hard working or goal driven. Hard work comes when you decide what it takes is whatever it takes and to never quit.
