In the beginning of my ongoing RV research I was looking at two Thor models among many others. A dealer I spoke with at a reputable dealership told me they don’t carry any Thor, and they also don’t carry Entegra or Joyco, which are also from Thor Industries. He didn’t say outright that Thor is junk, but I caught what he was trying to communicate. Everyone has their opinions and preferences so I never take one view as gospel, but in the meanwhile I’m convinced he was absolutely right about Thor. They are superficially great. Lots of bells and whistles, great floor plans, etc. but their rigs are carelessly slapped together and there’s truly zero quality control at any point.

I had a similar experience. When we were picking up our new Winnebago Travato just pre-pandemic - which was already signed in sealed, and we were just waiting for them to do a couple of add-ons for us - I was chatting with the sales guy. For no particular reason except that I was making fun of a huge trailer with four TVs that was parked next to our little B van. He said, "That's a Thor. I refuse to sell them. If a customer insists on buying one, I will turn them over to another salesperson." There was no advantage to him to tell me that because we'd already bought the little van, so I filed it in the back of my mind as something to pay attention to. And I've never heard of a Thor happy story. I'm sure there are some people who luck out, but I've never heard of one. So I can understand why as a salesperson, he wouldn't want the grief of unhappy buyers.

I watch five different RU-vid channels and they all been RVing, 5+ years each channel I have watched has said that things are not put together in RVs the way they used to be so I don’t think it’s just Thor I just think they don’t have the care they used to while putting RVs together they want to mass produce as many as they can so the quality of everything goes downhill at that point I am not an RV owner, but I am so grateful to these five channels that I watch because they tell me the truth on how things are done in the RV industry and when I am ready to buy my RV, I will definitely do a lot more research and I will definitely hire an inspector and I will tell their inspector that they need to check for leaks, and they need to check for every tiny itty-bitty thing known to man that might be wrong with the RV because I am not going to spend my hard earned money on a recreational vehicle that is going to give me problems. Other than regular wear and tear on the engine brakes. Another words regular maintenance I’m not going to make the dealers rich, when they don’t care, it’s the same as the makers of the Rv’s

A Friend of mine was looking to buy a Thor class C. He rented 1 for a weekend. He took it to a Truck Wash. He said it leaked like a Sive. He took it back to Dealer, told them he'd buy 1 that they would guarantee had no leaks. The dealer had a bunch of excuses but would not guarantee " no leaks ". They hounded him for 2 weeks until they gave up. In my opinion the entire camper industry needs regulated and guidelines put in play. Now they ( not all ) throw them together, take your hard earned money, and laugh all the way to the Bank.

I'm looking to replace my existing TT and visiting dealers to see what's available (used). Boy, they'll tell you anything! They try to poo-poo my comments on obvious, glaring problems when I point them out. Wrinkled wallpaper from water damage? Oh, well, little lady, that's just the way the wallpaper was hung. Shower door off the track? Oh, that just needs to be snapped back in place. Crumbling caulk? Oh, that's an easy fix, ignoring the fact that if the caulk isn't maintained, the camper probably leaks! Makes me crazy.

I've heard so many bad things about Thor personally, but so many others are also doing a terrible job at giving us quality RV's, for our hard earned dollars! I'm feeling I lucked out, buying from the public a preowned Tiffin Phaeton, and as all RV's there are always little things to fix, so I've been keeping on top of them so far, but we've thought of perhaps trying a truck & fifth wheel, but again, so many issues with them as well, so I'm certainly not going to be in any hurry, as I usually research the heck out of things before purchasing. Thanks Liz, thanks for keeping us informed!

It's the new ones that are a problem. Not a good time to buy new, but trailers and fifth wheels built in 2019 and before tend to be well-built. The motorhome sweet spot is 2002 to 2008. Whatever you buy, join the Facebook group of the model to get the scoop from owners. And always get an inspection. Another advantage of buying used is the seller has typically gotten the kinks out. I currently camp in a vintage tow behind trailer and have had a number of folks stop by to take a look at the camper for nostalgia sake and casually mention the build quality then compared to now. A few have admitted they hate their new RV mainly because what they paid compared to the build quality is nowhere to being equal. My next camper will be a self build cargo trailer to camper conversion. You couldn’t pay me to take a new RV/trailer right now. With the cargo to camper conversion I get my exact floor plan, I’m not paying for garbage I don’t need and since I’m installing the components I can act as the repair department, plus I’m saving money on overall cost, it only costs me my time and building talents. The manufacturers are pumping out garbage expecting the dealership to bear the brunt of the remediation but the dealership isn’t interested in customer service only profit so ultimately the consumer gets screwed by both.

A tip I can pass along for newbies: Have the dealerships go over everything with you and have them explain how everything works. When you get it home, go over everything again on your own. Fill the water tank. Hook up the city water. Run the sink. Flush the toilet. Run the appliances. Put out the slides. Better yet, leave the water system pressurized for a while and make sure you don't hear the water pump cycling and/or you have water appearing in strange places or dripping off the frame, because you may have a leak. Even brand-new RVs might have some loose fittings that need to be tightened, as the guy in this video found. Our brand new 2023 Wolf Pup had a couple loose hose fittings, but they were easy to fix.
@johntalbert8227

Thor sucks! In fact most of the industry manufacturers suck. Very few out there I would even consider purchasing. And most especially not new. I had a blow out about two years ago and while waiting for the four new tires to be installed I was talking with a service rep. I asked him which were the more dependable and which were the worst. This dealer had been in business for over 23 years. He told me Thor was the by far the worst they had ever seen on the market and the warranty work they were doing they weren't getting compensated for. The best unit he ever seen there they dont make anymore, King of the Road fifth wheels, and the second best in their opinion was Nu-Wa Industries Hitch Hiker and they dont make them anymore either. The quality was by far superior and worked themselves out of business. So they must make junk now so they can continue selling and repairing. It is a vicious cycle. Shame on anyone for not having a RV inspected by a certified inspector, especially when spending that kind of money. And double shame for ever making a purchase sight unseen! Live and Learn. Keep it between the lines!

This story is so familiar. I cannot understand how Camping World and Thor can still be in business and continue to sell junk. I bought a 2022 Thor 24CM Coleman in April of this year. It had 3500 miles on it so pretty much new. I have only been able to use it three times for weekend trips over the course of the six months of ownership due to it developing leaks, electrical failure, stabilizer motor failure, slide motor failure, black tank pipe fracture that turned out to be duct taped, which we did not realize may have been hiding a fracture. It's been in shop for over two months and I visit every week for more lip service, so it sits in the tall grass in their "service" field. This motorhome was my retirement life plan. At 71, sell the house, and get on the road. I used every dollar I had saved to purchase and fit this out. Camping World has given me nothing but lip service. I finally cancelled my storage space fees that I was paying for while it sat in their "service area." And don't get me started on the extended warranty and roadside assistance policy they soaked me for. Not worth the paper it is printed on. I have cancelled several trips, using my car to camp for the ones that I could not cancel. I really want to unload it and buy one manufactured by someone else pre-pandemic. They are trying to get me to consign with them, but the trust has been ruined.

They are slowly coming to the American market due to people wanting smaller and more fuel efficiency but sadly the price doubles once they reach our shores.

Great video. Unfortunately with slowing economy, rising rates and fewer buyers... highly doubtful rv manufacturers will up the quality on their units. Higher quality = more expensive to produce and consumers aren't in the best position to pay more.... I hope one day quality improves. Thanks for posting.

Have an independent inspection, even if brand spanking new. We bought our 2018 Airstream Classic from a RU-vid channel. They had documented everything on this rig, but my husband still wanted an inspection. It was worth every penny and the inspection was documented by the RU-vidr/seller. Invaluable !

RVing is my favorite thing to do. We owned a class A and a class C in the past. Now that I retired, my plan was to spend 6 months traveling in the RV. I’m afraid to buy an RV because of the poor quality. I’m trying out air BnB’s instead of RVing. We’d just spent a wonderful month in PA in an air bnb, and plan to return.

Another Thor disaster. (A Thob story.) I wonder if there are any happy stories with Thors. There's a young couple with a channel who have a Thor Tellaro B van they call "Mr. Lemon". And major things keep happening like the slider window just fell out. Driving down the road the bottom of the cabinet with their dishes in it started to fall apart. They have a little sign inside like the workplace industrial signs that says, "(x) Days Since Last Incident" Congrats for hitting/surpassing 100K!

One thing that needs to happen is that a Japanese company will start manufacturing RV’s in this country. They would have good quality and that would force the American RV manufacturers to start making quality products just like what happened to the American car industry.

RV manufacturers should be required to provide 2 or 3 year warranties that automatically extend to the number of days that the RV is in a shop. The sad part is that no matter how good the warranty is there are not enough RV shops of quality to do the repairs. >>>ALSO NEVER BUY A FULL WALL SLIDE

I live in Daytona, & I used to clean their windows 2x a month & there was NEVER a time I was there when it wasn't clear that a customer was having issues with them & the camper they bought there,,that alone told me a long time ago I would never deal with them, (once I am ready & able to start looking for my own) I am certainly leaning towards building my own out! My advice is don't buy new!!! Find a gently used RV where the previous owner has taken care of the issues already. When you look at one, BRING A FLASHLIGHT!!! Open cabinents and storage, check for dampness or water. Check bathrooms and water storage areas for damp. Plus, keep in mind that a big slide means a good chunk of your RV will be open to water infiltration. LOOK HARD. Pay for an inspection if you need to. This is sad, but trust no one!!! Be your own best advocate. I always open the door and sniff hard, if it's funky I walk away. I have a Coachman class C now, well-built vehicle. A few issues when I got it but nothing like the folks I see here.

All you need to do is take a tour of a RV factory in Elkhart, IL (for those not in the know 80% of the RVs made in the World come from the area). You will be amazed at how cheaply and how rushed they are made. 98% of the employees are paid by the piece, and unfortunately 1/2 of the employees you most likely would not invite into your home. And these are the few factories that offer a tour. Can only imagine the goings on in the ones that don't offer a tour. You can drive by them, but they will look like abandoned, rusted out buildings with lots full of weeds and trash. Only evidence that it is an active site are a few shinny RVs sitting on the lot. Agree though, the RV industry has done itself in with poor quality, unfortunately it will most likely end up with government oversight, lemon laws, regulations etc, which will already drive up the overpriced RVs. .

I was sold an extended warranty by Giant only to find out by the warranty company that it didn’t exist. Previous manager who no longer works at Giant was a crook. I traded in a Class C there for a Class A and Giant did not title it and my bank account was drafted for another payment. I never did get my money back on that.

I have a customer who repairs high end RVs in the SoCal desert (Riverside county). First he tells me that NO one wants to work on anything older then about 5 years and that most of the techs want to work on brand new stuff because the warranty work pays better. He also tells me that hiring any techs that know what they are doing is almost impossible - they want ridiculous hourly pay and many don't really know what they are doing - some more complicated then changing engine oil or cleaning windows is a challenge. He says don't even expect the new younger guys to understand how to work on the rooftop AC units, searching and repairing leaks, anything to do with wiring and electrical, etc. Finally, the good independents really only want to work on the high end units - good luck getting someone fairly competent to work on a $15K travel trailer. The local dealers refuse to do warranty work on units they did not sell - so buy a trailer/camper in Idaho, come to SoCal for the winter and expect to get warranty work - good luck.

Liz I have enjoyed your videos and I feel they are possibly the most valued RV videos on the market todate. I have owned three Motorhomes over time and fortunately I have never experienced many of the issues shown in your videos. But, there is little question that the manufacturers of today are less interested in quality. I agree that showing these types of videos I hope will bring the manufacturers to the table and improve thier quality. I do not own a Motorhome now I sold my Thor last year and I am not sure I would buy another one. While I did not have major issues with my Thor motorhome I did have issues with Thor themselves when it came to warranty work. Keep up the good work.

My wife and I bought a new 2024 camper on September 8, 2023. It was in the shop from November 8, 2023 to December 21, 2023. The right side of the u-shaped dinette table was pulling away from the wall when the slide came in. The slide has a design flaw causing the floor to buckle a little. Just enough to cause the issue. The dealership fixed it per guidance from the manufacturer. So far it is holding up. Fortunately we are not full time campers and it is off season.

I worked in sales and finance at an RV dealership for 5 years. I lived in a 30' trailer for about 6 years. I have always been aware that RV's are not designed/constructed for continuous or residential use. However, it appears that things have taken a downturn when it comes to quality control by the manufacturers. I hate to say this but it might be time to have some type of regulations implemented to protect the purchasers.

An inspection will not find structural issues that promote water leaks unless it is a problem with a roof or is blatantly obvious. Only thing that will get proper attention from rv manufacturers is a Class Action law suit. They do not properly handle warranty claims.
@LizAmazing
@LizAmazing 9 месяцев назад
The problem with a class action is they all have to be the same model. I did a video a few months ago about the Grand Design 390RK. On their Facebook page there is talk of doing just that. And you are right about the limitations of an inspection for sure!

I had the 2004 for 16 years and we and the kids traveled everywhere with no issues. You are getting a lot of manufactured junk out there. I owned 4 RVs. 1st was a 2007 Winnebago Journey Class A. Nothing but probems and rust underneath. Traded it in on a 2010 Class A Tiffin Phaeton. Quality issues and plumbing problems. Traded that one in on a 2013 Sunseeker Class C. This wasn't bad, but quality wasn't great. Decided to move back up to a Class A, so traded that in on a Tiffin Allegro Class A gas. This had some initial bugs (windows wouldn't close - 3 replaced), a warped interior wall (replaced). Once the bugs were worked out, it wasn't bad. In it's 4th year, the roof had some bubbles in it (looked like fiberglass delam). They had a 5 year delam guarantee, so I took pictures. They said it was normal for the fiberglass roof to lift up a little here and there as the glue on the substrate would give here and there. I finally sold in 2021 and got out of RVing for good. Word to the wise. Just rent the campground cabins. If something is wrong, it's not your headache. RVs are a money drain.
