Godm. @Patricia Berry, I know Right! Mannn! They make those Squash Leaves Luk Sooo 😋 Delicious 🤤Tasty. Yummy! Or I'm just hungry! Lol 😆 Hwever, I'd like 2 try it. I'd have 2 grow my own squash or find a friend with a garden in order to even try some Squash leave Greens. 😭 😲 I'm shock'd my Mama never thot or👂🏾abt cuk'n squash leaves back in da day, or never heard abt that in the South or from older Southern folks in our Fam.. Bc they were taught not 2 throw anything away or waste any food, etc. She, her Fam. cud make Any food into a meal 4 sho. 😀👍🏾😆😆😂

Also, we're all livn in different states 4 the last 26 yrs. But still, no excuse. I'm the yngest, the babygrl of Us all. SMH! God sees n knows why.
Squash leaves are delicious! I married into a Kenyan family and my mother-in-law makes them frequently. We remove the spines by stripping the stem starting at the base. They pull off easily that way. They're cooked simply with onions, tomatoes and salt cooked down before adding the leaves. I hope you give the squash leaves another try!
Yelena the brother said Come on Easter, come on Christmas which lets us know they will try it again. Tab’s squash leaves were really big and plentiful. Thanks for your recipe.
The way Brutha chopped that garlic....and onions had me HOLLERIN!🤣🤣🤣 Tab, maybe if you squeezed/massaged the leaves and stewed it like we traditionally cook greens and add some vinegar, it may break down the rough texture.🤷🏾♀️ Just a recommendation from a Sista who's just a home cook, knows her way around the kitchen but also never tried squash leaves, lol I'm just assuming that although different, a green is a green💁🏾♀️
@@bobbyknuckles4510 I can't go vegan, my IBS would make my life hell if I did. I could literally have an impacted stool, extreme diarrhea, or other health issues. Acidic foods also aggravate my stomach and can cause ulcers because my stomach already produces too much acid. I also can't really be bothered to take supplements for things I can naturally get from eating meat. I rather find cheaper, humane, local sources of meat and dairy than go through the struggles of trying to balance the health issues that a vegan diet would inflict on me. It's not optimal for me to have a diet that I can't even eat most the foods in. I rather live a happy, comfortable life rather than a miserable and painful one.
@@thejackalanimatronic oh God. Didn't wanna rant but here we go. Your IBS could very well be caused from your consumption of meat. Only certain foods in the vegan diet are acidic like oranges, lemons etc so you would just refrain from those or monitor your PH and only eat acidic foods when your body starts becoming too alkaline. Eating meat is actually more expensive than eating vegan if you are intelligent, shop correctly, and know how to cook things yourself. Fruits and vegetables are actually quite cheaper than meat if you compare it yourself in a grocery store.. If you aren't a good cook or don't have a good cook around you it may not be the route to go for you. You don't need supplements if you eat a well balanced vegan diet. There are amino acids/protein in vegetables. Its called plant based protein. There is nothing miserable or painful about being vegan :-) it is a beautiful world once you dive inside.. the world of life instead of death. Your body doesn't want to consume death. Carnivores also eat herbivores for their nutrients..why not go straight to the source? Blessings to you my friend
@@bobbyknuckles4510 I didn't get IBS from eating meat. I got IBS because I suffered appendicitis when I was younger. Not all health issues are tied to meat. Infact the consumption of certain foods makes my condition worse. I know my health conditions. I don't need you to tell me how to eat because I already know what works for me, and a vegan diet isn't it. Vegan diets don't work for everyone. I am fine with current diet. I'm healthy, comfortable, and happy. I know my body, you don't. I do still eat what veggies I can, I also didn't say that vegetables were more expensive. My implications were that locally sourced meats were cheaper than the highly processed vegan meat substitutes. Local sources are also better than the deforestation that occurs with the big agriculture and meat industries. I'm not shaming you for your choices. You are going about your life in a way that works for you. Don't try to shame and bully me into a life that doesn't work for me, you could just respect me as a person who is living a life that works for me. If you want to get right down to it we both still eat living things. It's pretty much unavoidable unless you just eat the straight up nutrients. Which even then those supplements have to come from something, they can't just be created out of thin air. There's the damage to the environment things like soybean farming does to the environment and there's the damage cattle farming does. When it comes down to it there's really not much difference. There's still a life being destroyed. Whether it's the steak on my plate, the wildlife being dehomed by deforestation or crushed by a harvester, animals poisoned by pesticides, or simply the lettuce being chopped up and put in a salad. I respect the fact that you don't eat meat, you could choose to respect the fact that I do eat meat. There is no real shame in either choice. You don't need everyone to be vegan to be happy, just like I don't need everyone to eat meat to be happy.
I read your book before I discovered you online. Thank you for all you do. Your book really encouraged when I was down. We are the same age and a couple months ago I was diagnosed with stage 4, pancreatic cancer. Your book helped restore my faith. Thank you 💜🙏
It is SUCH a good time when the two of you are together. Your garden is on point. Definitely goals. Now I gotta try some squash leaves and blossoms. LOVE me some y'all, Lil Sis & Lil Bro. ❤💯
The leaves usually get boiled down for a bit, before frying & seasoning, etc. It's not just East Africa (Tanzania, Uganda, etc ) that eat them, but Southern Africa does too - but I know that it's pumpkin leaves that routinely get cooked. I'm South African & I distinctly remember my Gran making these when I was young(er). She would add peanut butter to hers - and I think that combination also works in Zim(babwe) too. So glad you both enjoyed it❤️
Love y’all . I had a little disagreement with hubby . So I was not in a smiling mood. But I smiled the whole time watching your video. Won’t God do it. I am not sure what I was mad about .
Hey ya'll...very good! As you were cooking, I was saying "add some broth" I think that's what that need. Just a lil broth to soften it up. Thanks for sharing yet again another good idea!
It's a good thing to see you and your handsome beautiful brother and great family happy May to you happy early mother's Day thank you for being a wonderful motivator as usual 🎊💯‼️💫🎉😎🐯
In the pacific islands, we LOVE those leaves in our soups, especially with coconut milk. Make a soup with the firmer squash, those leaves and coconut milk. We normally add chicken, but of course you’ll leave that out. It’s still delicious without the meat.
That looked really good Tab (other than the texture thing.) Try cooking down organic collard greens with minced garlic, onions, and some diced organic butternut squash or yams in coconut milk, a couple dashes of coconut aminos, a pinch of red chili flakes, salt, & pepper to taste. It's a new vegan Asian version of your southern collard greens. 😊🍠🌱 P.S. Your brother crack me up every time! Vegan fatback! Lol...love your relationship together. 😄
You might have to add a touch of oil to those leaves and massage the oil into the leaves to soften that texture. That's how I prep raw kale for my delicious kale salad. #washyourhands #reallygood
OMGD Yall to are so funny. I bust out laughing when your brother started chopping the garlic and onions. I was laughing so hard everybody had to come see what I was laughing at too. The squash leaves look delicious. I'm definitely gonna try some. Thanks for sharing
I love the relationship u and your brother have. He's full of fun and it's good for you. I'm going to try and experiment with this recipe this summer. I love your garden structure.
Tab, I love your videos. My 1.5yr old thought the chopping sequence was quite funny, too! Getting ready to start up this year’s garden, can’t wait to try this! Thanks for your videos! We have watched and loved every Tab Time!
this was definitely a fun video to watch the full belly laughs put a smile on my face and I learned a thing or two about cooking the leaves...will be back to watch more videos 😀😉🤠
You two together are hilarious & admire your love & respect for each other! Love your positivity & you’re as beautiful inside as you’re on the outside 🙏🏻❤️🥰
Hey Tab, your brother is a fool🤣🤣. I love you guys cuttin up! I would love to see how you started your garden, what it looks like and what you decided to plant and why??? I’ve always been curious since the pandemic about starting one but didn’t know if I wanted to plant on the ground or in containers.
There are several videos on her garden she's posted on social media. Look through RU-vid, Facebook, Instagram, and tiktok and you'll find everything all the way back to when the garden was planned and built.
You and your brother are a riot together! Family can be such a blessing! I coulda swore you was gonna put your Sunshine Seasoning on them squash greens. Looks like I've got another item to add to my produce-to-try-list....
Your garden looks amazing. Love all the way from 🇿🇦. This is a favorite for my family, my ma would pick the smaller leaves and mix them with a bit of the cooked squashed/pumpkin, so we don't get that rough texture.
Gotta love brothers, they be doing the most. Love your relationship, makes me miss my brothers. When we are together they torment me to tears but I miss them when we are apart.
LOVE THIS! I just ate my first grown squash ever a few minutes ago and am SO excited to know I can eat the leaves as well. Thank you, Ms. Tab! 😍😘 PS Thank you too for mentioning the texture cuz I 4 sho was wondering about that. 👍🏽
OH my goodness, you two were so beautiful to watch. This is my first watch of you two and WOOOOOOOOOW, I am a Trinidad and Tobago, and I am a woman and looking for plants that dose more, Did he just say " God gave me that" YES Brother. I Love you two. Don't Stop now. I LOVE YOU BOTH. KEEP DOING. Devi.
this video gave me so much joy! love the dynamic between you and your brother. I just bought collards yesterday, but now I'm gonna be stalking my mama for her squash plant leaves!
My Mama used to add the squash leaves to the beans’ pot during the last few minutes So they were almost cooked by the steam. After that you can mix them in the beans’ or take them out, sauter and season before serving. They would be tender and tasty. Happy Mother’s Day y’all Mamas.
Hiya! I'm a year late but we eat alot of squash and melon plant trimmings in my culture and I recommend to get rid of the roughness by a) prepping them by "'deveining"' them (removing the surface fibres from the veins and stems). you do it by pinching at the stem end of the leaf, and peeling off the stringy fibre. Do the same with the stems by snapping pieces off halfway and peeling the fibres off each piece as you take off the rest. It takes a bit of practice to figure out, there might be some better guides online. b) being rough with the leaves when you wash them to soften them and c) like you said, chop them a little thinner and use a little water if they don't wilt enoughh I'm not vegan so we tend to cook them with dried or leftover fried fish but whatever strong savoury ingredient you can find would probably work well. We like it with lots of fresh herbs and garlic too.
It's very delicious. It can be tender depending on how you peel off the rough top skin of the stems, how small/thin you chop the leaves and the method of cooking it. I recommend using the tomatoes/union stewing or the soda stewing. Or simply chop in the blender.
