This is the first of 4 behind the scenes videos in which I aim to answer a number of the questions I’ve been asked over the last few years concerning my work.
In this, part 1, I will cover the equipment I use - cameras, lighting, sound recording and so on. In part 2 I will go over some top tips for budding cave videographers and in part 3 I will look at the massive importance of editing your recorded footage.
I've heard from Scurion that the flickering mentioned in the video can be completely avoided if neither LED is set to the super low power level of 1. I will cover this in my next video.

This must be part of the humor, because when I watched a video of yours the first thing that came to my mind was how you filmed it. Capturing footage where there is little to no light is something hard to do, and making videos about the journey is so important for caving clubs. Im certain that there must be so many people asking you how you film your videos.

Keith. This is Dave from the US. A tip. I don't know if you have it in the UK, but I use "Press and Seal" by the Glad company to keep mud off equipment I take into caves. Press and Seal is a kitchen wrap for preserving food, and has a food quality adhesive on one side. It sticks quite well to equipment, but is easily removed after the cave trip. It is opaque, so it obviously cannot be used over a lens. Also, any control that needs to be rotated will need to have a slit cut with an exacto knife to facilitate the rotation. Controls that are pushed be pushed can be covered and still usable. The wrap leaves a slight adhesive residue on the equipment when removed, but this can easily be removed by wiping with Goo Gone, a cleaner derived from orange peals. Anyway, you might want to try if you can to help keep mud off your equipment.

Hi Dave. Thanks very much for the top tip. I've not heard off Press and Seal but I've just checked Amazon in the UK and it lists Press'n Seal which looks exactly like the product you describe. I will have to give it a go. Thanks again for the advice. Best regards, Keith

Thank you Keith for this informative video. Me and my partner have actively watched your videos for a few years now. I started caving just over 3 years ago and I treated myself to a Go Pro Hero 4 Black which I use now to take many club trip photos and videos (Lincoln Scouts Caving Club). Having watched your video I hope to upgrade and improve in the future to further enjoy and promote caving 😁 thank you!

Hi Megan. Thanks very much for watching my videos. Great to hear that you are now a caver. It was great fun making a video with the Shropshire Scouts a couple of years ago. The young people were incredible. I had intended to have finished part two by now but I've only been caving twice this year. Perhaps I'll be able to make it next year.

Hi Wendy. I've just watched your lockdown caving video and it's brilliant. I love the wet chamber, especially the waterfall, and the stalactights you discovered are amazing! I wish I had thought of doing this. Lockdown has meant that a number of video projects are on hold. Part 2 should have been completed last year but as I'm in a vulnerable age group I did very little caving so haven't been able to film anything. Over the last few days I have been looking at my notes for part 2. I am hoping to complete it later this year but in the meantime I've also been thinking of presenting it as a series of short articles on UK Caving, so it might be worth looking out for that.

Thanks for that. It was just a bit of silliness cos I was bored with my dad. Lol. I certainly shall keep my eyes peeled. I don’t really use that much but will start looking. Iv only got into caving more seriously this year but did manage to get over 50 trips in this year as it felt fairly safe to exercise I wasn’t gonna meet load of people. Lol. And I really enjoy taking some pics but not tried video yet. Only got iPhone, Nikon 1 aw and go pro 4. Thanks again for all the videos

Thank you for this! My other channel "The Hammond Caver" will benefit for the information in this video and the upcoming 2! I usually use my GoPro Hero 6 Black on a hand gimbal, a helmet-mounted GoPro Hero 3+ Black and my iPhone 7 in a LifeProof case for photos. My DLSR is not at all well-suited for our wet Indiana caves! My lighting consists of a 1200 Lm NiteCore, a 1000 Lm NiteCore, a 630 Lm OrcaTorch D560 a 1050 Lm OrcaTorch D530 torch and for area lighting, I have a 1000 and a 2500 Lm panel light setup.

Hello Keith to you, your family and your team. You all are amazing and I love what you do and what you bring to us the viewers. I highly appreciate you sharing most of your filming secrets. After this tutorial, anyone should be able to make their own videos. Yeah Right! Lol. 😆.. I eagerly await your new videos hand and foot since I am your biggest fan. Do you sell t-shirts or sweaters or any other clothing apparel? If so, I'm in! Thankyou once again for your wonderful videos. I know first hand it's not easy and it takes alot to put a video together. You all are highly appreciated and I love you and your amazing work. God bless you and your family as well as your team.... Until we meet again, your biggest fan, Jose Santana.......

Thanks very much. I appreciate that. After a break of 4 years I have just started work on parts 2 and 3 of this series. Also by the end of the month I'm aiming to upload my documentary video of Geoff Yeadon, at the age of 72, diving the sumped passages between Aquamole Pot and Valley Entrance in Yorkshire, England.
@scurion
@scurion 4 года назад
Hi Keith, the flickering exists with every Scurion lamp model ;-) But only when one or both LED's are set on the super-low power level 1 of 4. It's very easy to avoid that nasty flickering by just checking all the involved lamps on the set and change their programming if necessary. Just don't use the lowest setting in your lamps and you won't see any flickering at all.
@CaverKeith
@CaverKeith 4 года назад
Thanks very much for pointing this out. I never realised. I will add this to the video description. As I said in the video my Scurion has been a super light for my videos.

Thanks. This has been a long time in the planning stage and I wasn't really sure about releasing it when it was finished, but it's had some really positive comments and connected me with other people making underground videos which is great. Keep up the good work yourself.

Yep, I’m looking at doing one in editing when my channel is larger. My lights and camera aren’t that brilliant so I have to do a lot of colour grading to try to get the best. With editing footage, adding in shots, sorting out music and colour grading, my new Coniston video took 38 hours of editing on go pc. Yes, I’m a bit ocd lol

Keith Edwards infact, watching this has convinced me when filming tomorrow to take GoPro off helmet and attach to selfie stick to try and get more stable video.

What I would like to know is the people who 1st went into the more experienced caves with the tight squeezes how did they determined wether they should try it or not? An interview with someone like that would be pretty interesting.

Hi Andy. Sorry but I must have missed your comment. Your best course of action would be to contact a local caving club. Most of them offer novice taster trips. Have a look at newtocaving.com/start-caving.php
