@@n.v.9000 You don't have stories that go with some of your belongings? For example I look at my old backpack and think back to all of the mountains I climbed with it. So yes, people can have stories that go with their watches.
I watch your videos with my 9-year-old son to try to instil in him a sense of style and purpose, and he loved this one. So, as a back-to-school present for Grade 5, I bought one of these for him, and one for me. I just tucked him in and he insisted on falling asleep with it on. Thanks Brian.
As a watch collector I can honestly say you can’t consider yourself as seriously into timepieces if you don’t include a Casio in your collection. Not matter if it is cheap or expensive, a Casio timepiece is always a high quality item. Great video as usual.
This episode actually made me buy this Casio A158W. And yes, it truly is a joy to wear. Unpretentious, subtle, but classic and gives you what you just need.
One of my bosses at work wears a watch like that. They go surprisingly well with a suit. They are small, unobtrusive and modest yet they have a strong retro appeal. It's no wonder they are popular in Japan.
Not only here in Japan, I live in Austria and see more and more people walking around with such watches. I wear G-Shock watches myself. They are watches that will outlive everything and everyone.🙂
I’ve had a few versions of this watch , it has pretty much every function you could need , I still use it to time my exercise routines and wear one every day for work . They seem to be almost indestructible, the battery lasts for years ( although the resin strap doesn’t) and keeps good time .Basically does everything a watch needs to do
I own the A168. Threw a milanese mesh strap on it asap. I love it, wear it around the house. It's functional and I love the retro aesthetic. You can't be a serious watch enthusiast without a Casio in your collection.
You're the second person I've heard of putting on the mesh strap for the A168. I think I'm going to try it out. Do you have any suggestions for picking up a strap?
@@BosunM8James So I recommend the classic stainless steel milanese mesh strap from Watchgecko for $34. They're solid and well built but you can look at other places like StrapsCo or even Amazon for somewhat cheaper alternatives. Two things to consider when putting it on the A168. The braclet will be heavier than the actual watch itself so the watch may feel weird and unbalanced on your wrist. Secondly, the bracelet doesnt taper from the lugs. Its 18mm wide straight down from the lugs to the clasp. I know some people like that tapered look so just something to consider.
My father actually preferred cheap digital watches and he said it's pretty convenient because you take a glimpse to know the time. Another reason is the watch are quite cheap and the battery is easy to replace. Thanks for making this video!
bought my exact same watch almost ten years ago and still love it. it is all scratched up now and the bracelet does not work reliably anymore but it survived two motorcycle accidents and the battery still runs ;-) well-deserved retirement I would say.
I wear a stainless steel Dugena quartz watch almost daily, it was the watch my dead grandpa use to wear for work (metalworker) so it has a lot of little scratches and imperfections. I still love the watch, it fits perfectly around my smaller wrists and is very inconspicuous. very timeless and very elegant for what it actually is
I also have a Casio watch too. My uncle has bought this watch from Australia in 2010 for my birthday! Even if the time has changed but it still works so good!!!
It's also a great fit for when you work in harsh environments and need to put your arms inside small spaces (like a mechanics for example). This thing is really robust and even if it breaks it's so cheap that you don't spend your time being afraid of damaging it, letting you focus on everything that really matters when working.
I really like your sponsorship joke lol. Actually, those “cheep Casios” was trended in Japan few years ago kind of same reason that you like your watch.
I literally wear F91 W everyday and the A158 WA for special occasions and im so happy and satisfied! Best product of Casio!!! Absolutely love these small little square digital watches. My essential
I've rediscovered my love of Casios again. It's so good we can by brand new versions of the watches we had as kids. I just bought a GW-5610 and it looks almost identical to the 1983 model, but with Solar and Multi Band 6.
The other day I bought a Casio from Japan (it was a cheap Casio) and I was very impressed with the box and all that it came with. Nothing to do with the cheap boxes they sell them here in the US. Huge difference
This is why I love your channel. Nothing pretentious and giving credit where it’s due. I recall seeing this bracelet fit a Q timex and it was beautiful. Looking forward to your comparative videos on high and low end watches.
So glad to see so many people valuing this work of art. I've been mocked by a few people for loving and wearing this watch everyday. Great to see my taste being appreciated
Yep. I bought another to keep pristine and wear the other at least 5 days a week. Just too comfortable and simple. Even the cheap bracelet is better than a nato imo.
A true gentlemen, born around the 70s and grown up in the 80s will probably appreciate this classic watch in its true retro origin. Its an extremely subtle, peaceful, quiet and non-aggressive watch. The fact that you can go against the popular-masses views on the usual expensive watches - like most youtubers, I have indeed a new found in-depth respect for you. Value and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is not found on social media, advertisements and marketing gimmicks. Amongst my collection of APs, Daytonas and blah blah blah, I still find it extremely enjoyable to wear my Casios and Seikos. Wealth is quiet. Rich is loud. Poor is flashy. And don't bother about those thumbs-down because not everybody acquired that sort of understanding and taste I just mentioned. Brilliant video and sharing as always. Well done. Thank you for doing what you do.
This makes me smile a lot. I don't think I'd call my Casio F-91W my favorite but it's definitely the one I get the most use out of. I even considered buying multiple Casios to place around my home and car in case I forget to put a watch on.
My grandpa used to wear this watch. It’s been 2 years he is not with us anymore. Watching this video you reminded me of him and I think I would love to have one in my collection. Classic ! ❤️
Casio have mastered proportions and could teach high end watch makers a thing or two about how well a watch fits and wears - I have many different Casio’s of all shapes and sizes and they ALL wear perfectly (even my big G Shock and 45mm Edifice) - compared to my many other watches inc one or two higher end pieces the Casio’s just fit right and do their job without any fuss and never need adjusting on the wrist half way through the day
Well said! Over the past few years I’ve definitely focused on collecting high end pieces, such as the Patek 5170G and others in my small collection but recently I pulled the trigger on a Casio G-Shock as it really brings back memories of one I had as a teenager. Even this Casio you’ve shown here really embodies those 80’s vibes I think I’ll be ordering one as well! Cheers!
"Rebought" an Ironman Classic this past fall just out of nostalgia and needed a beater. Nothing worked better for that for me back in Jr. High and High School.
Very well said. I have owned this watch for about 6 years now, and to this day it gets the most wrist time out of all the watches in my collection. IMO, it is one the most versatile watches out there, especially for the price!
The F91W brings so many sweet memories from my childhood and teenage years three decades ago. Jump out of bed, wear my watch, ride my bike and meet my friends for a new adventure
Oh boy did you hit the nail on the head with this video. I can't tell you how many times I've been desperate to have a certain thing, buy a cheap equivalent because I'm impatient, to end up disliking it, throwing it out, and purchasing a more expensive, better quality version later. What a waste of money and time. Thanks for the video. I have yet to get into watches as a young guy just trying to build a wardrobe, but it's nice to know there are cool, inexpensive entries into the hobby.
My dad used to have that watch. We live in different continents right now, I miss seeing him everyday... that watch remind me of him when I was a kid. Thanks! I might get it too!
My dad had this same watch and after getting into watches I asked my dad if I can see all the ones he still has. Even though I'm a girl, it looks really great on my wrist and since he doesn't wear it I got it sized and have taken it as part of my collection and as a sort of heirloom piece :)
“Sponsored by Casio...” 😂😂😂😂 You could’ve also made the video title “5 reasons Casio is better than Rolex!” I love Casio, seiko, and timex. Just the funnest beater watches imo. I’ve been wanting to try Swatch, too
@@bubblewrapvillain Amen! I remember when I lived in a studio apartment, I had to keep mine in a drawer across the room and I could still hear it when I tried to sleep at night! I love my swatches and the ticking isn't bad during the day (and sometimes comes in handy) but man, at night...
I have this watch in my collection. All of my watches get compliments, but the compliments my A185W get feel more genuine. It hits you and others in the nostalgic feels and seems to fuel conversion with everyone. Here in Canada it costs around $30.00 and it probably the best $30.00 I’ve spent on a watch.
Casio actually has several amazing watches!! Absolutely love this video. I’ve actually enjoyed seeing some more affordable options that you intertwine in your style.
I have bought this watch, and it is my first real watch. and it is a pleasure wearing it every day. I am 14 years old and it is a good felling when wearing it. it gets it job done, and i love it.
Started with this watch in rubber version when I was 10 years old. I have the metal version for 10 years now when I was in my early 20s. It is still on it's first battery. Really well build for the price.
I would actually be ecastatic if you feature this in one of your lookbook videos 😁 I too have fallen for that watch snobbery a while back but I think the fact that someone put an effort to buy and wear a watch at all is a sign of effort and taste! - Han
I have just come across these watches and I'm absolutely obsessed with the Casio 158w and the rubber version that looks the same. I love the simplicity of them!! The design is actually beautiful to me.
Like others have commented the FW91 brings back memories for me. It was my first digi watch my sister gifted to me in the early 80s, at around 9-10yo, then Swatch....then (original v1.0) TAG Link and up. Now back down to the humble SRPE61k. It’s really just about enjoying the hobby for oneself - me.
I have the one with gold/camel dial, it would make it a lot classic/vintage imo. Loving the quality for its price point and the bracelet is really great and comfortable even it's made of folded stainless steel. From far, that bracelet could look as elegant as those luxury watches, can't stop looking at it every time it's on my wrist.
This watch is probably most popular in my state of Kerala in India. Where you can see everyone who belongs to a 60s- 80s wear these watches. It has to do with the gulf boom that happened in Kerala back in 1960s when there was massive immigration to gulf by keralites to escape proverty and Kerala got rich as the gulf got richer and that 19 dollar Casio was something you'd see on every person from gulf, it was the favourite gift the non immigrants wanted to get from the ones who immigrated and came back home for leave. I've seen that watch on many hands 1000s if not 100s and I remember getting one once and I thought what a Classic piece of work ❤️
It's very refreshing to see your take on the luxury vs inexpensive watches, specially considering sentimental flavor and personal style. Watching some old videos of yours, I really got the feeling that unless you bought the traditional and well stablished brands, you were pretty much wasting money. Kind of like with suits (spicy comparison, I know). Anyways, great video and I'm excited to see the one comparing watches that you mentioned. Keep it up, Brian.
I can understand. I've become obsessed with the "Casio Royale" and have upgraded it with a stainless steel case, sapphire glass, and a full tritium backlight. I have some plans to even make a new PCB and controller with more features for it.
Great video, as usual. I have a Casio w-217h, which is a slightly larger version of the f-91; less than $20.00. Great for working around the house/yard or when I'm rough housing with my grand kids; it's a fantastic, no worry, no hassle time keeper. Always enjoy your channel and style, Brian.
I love this watch so much. It's been with me for 7 years. I wear it to workouts, hiking, vacations -- everywhere! And I haven't even had to change the battery.
I was going to pass, but your take on the simplicity of this watch caught my attention. Actually, you are correct in that this watch does what you need it to do, simple and accurate. And the function buttons get you to where you need to go. Makes me want to take a second look at getting one.......thanks.
This is a vintage product brings back all thr memories of 90S when some teachers used to wear those and we dreamt of having those.. so classy simple and elegant. I have already ordered one..
I had that watch when I was in college. It was the watch I got after I thought I had destroyed my grandfather's vintage Wittnauer automatic (I didn't, it just needed a new crystal and a servicing). Casios are honest and unpretentious. If you need something functional and you are traveling somewhere you might be concerned about your good watch getting stolen, you can pick up one of these and when the trip is over, you can give it away, or use it as a beater watch. But, IMO, they are not all that attractive. And unless they seriously upgraded the bracelet. I remember the Casio bracelet was folded links. Comfortable but not enjoyable to wear. You can't really complain about a watch you can get for less then $20, but for a few bucks more, there are better options.
I found the 168w at walmart just a bit ago thinking to myself "your old samsung smartwatch has been broken for years, you need to get a watch" decided to just take a look as I wasnt really planning on buying anything under $100. Found this guy the last one left on the shelf and I am so happy that I bought it for only $20. Its my everyday watch now and looks great paired with my wedding ring and a stainless steel chain bracelet on my right wrist. Definielty going to start looking at more Casio watches down the road.
What you say here is absolutely correct. I've always thought that one doesn't need to spend a lot to be happy. Not saying we should be cheap, but if something cheap catches our fancy then go for it. Ain't nothing wrong with that. Got a few Casio's myself. Funny thing is, despite them usually being the cheapest watches in anyone's collection (if they do have them), they're actually the ones with the most functionality.
Im wearing Casio watch , which my grandmother gave to me two years ago as a gift. She had wearing it for around 16 yrs . Now she passed away … I still wearing her watch although it becomes gray .. but it means a lot to me
When my collection grew starting from an IWC after high school, I started to appreciate watches even more regardless of the price tag. I got a couple more IWC and Panerai's but then developed a love for the Seiko SKX and a few Timex pieces like the Expedition Scout and their reissue of the Q Timex. I love watches. I even got a Casio F-91W a few days ago and to my surprise, there is an all-steel version of it. Really cool!
@@biasaigon7155 The cheapest Casio digital watch can be more accurate than any expensive automatic watches on the market. So, in a way, you can say cheap is better.
@@biasaigon7155 Not really. There are people who could buy a damn Rolex or two, but they get the same functionality with cheap Casio. I stopped wearing usual watches years ago, all because smartphones, even dropped a smartwatch some time ago. Just don't need it. People nowadays wear these expensive watches just to show off. "Hey, look I can afford expensive watch, look at it!". All that while having a car in leasing, house mortgage etc etc. People who actually have money do not need to show off 😉
Totally agree! I bought a brand new Longines right after getting my PhD. But I almost never wear it. First I was afraid to scratch it. Second, they used to be uncomfortable to wear. My all time favorite now is Casio GA-2100. They are with me literally everywhere.
I bought a red and blue pair of Chuck Taylors for the first time in my life. My wife makes fun of them but I like them. I actually have a Timex that is similar to this Casio with the stretch bracelet. Super thin, cheap, and reliable.
@@appalachiangunman9589 both are simple in form, efficient in function, will outlast a lot of the newer more flashy stuff. Can't be called beautiful except by those who appreciate their classic appeal. You got good taste. I'm thinking you would be an AK guy😁
I can get Chucks in a 13 though, this on my 8 inch wrist is too small... I do agree with you though, both the Chucks and Casios are timeless classics for sure!
I was born in 1968 and this video brought me back to the 70s and 80s, when I was an elementary school student. I have no expensive watches, my the most expensive watches are Tissot PRC200 and Pulsar PU2069X1, and they are perfect for me :) So now, when I watched this video, I did it, I bought a new one A158WA :) Thanks for bringing me back in time.
My first love was a $20 Casio illuminator watch. I loved the look, simplicity, standard features, and that green illuminated face. I still own that watch, it's 23 years old now and still keeps accurate time. Now even though I own more expensive watches I always go back at least once a week to my old faithful friend. ⌚️
I have a Casio collection going, I have the W-168, just a little bigger and more colorful because I'm a big guy but what fun.. I choose each day between an ani-digi or a sport, a world time.. I have gotten the most compliments from my "gold" W217H and the Royale. Super affordable, nostalgic and lots of enjoyment.
I did a lot of research of this watch and the A168 (which is the one I bought) before buying it because this one got me into the watch world. My father used to have the F91W and it reminds me of him. I really love this watch, it's so light to wear, useful in functions, really good looking and it's cheap.
I always will love my Casio. Even when people say, that my other (more expensive Watches) are way better. Not one of my other Watches can bring me the joy, that a Casio can^^
One of the most balanced and thoughtful videos I have seen on this subject. I love what you said about real watch enthusiasts who are a million miles separated from forum watch snobs. I have some nice watches in my collection including my Grand Seiko but I get equal pleasure from my vintage Timex, Casio and 1980 Seiko LCD watches as I do my GS. They all make me feel I’m wearing something that makes my heart sing and that are honest if that makes sense? It’s why I get no joy in homage watches or microbrand watches, they just don’t feel honest to me. I would rather be content looking at the real things but never owning them than wearing an homage to them as it’s just an homage, it will never convey the integrity of the real thin. Your Casio has integrity and I think that contributes greatly to the feeling of joy in wearing it!
My sister gave me this watch for christmas. Its been a long time i haven't wear a watch and i love it. I wear it all the time and it's far more useful than taking your phone out your pocket whatever you need to check the time
I have to agree, I'm 55 & grew up in the 70s & 80s & and I can remember digital watches becoming extremely popular, they were expensive at the time & have always had a great deal of affection for them, casio especially. I'm currently wearing my Tag Monaco & it really is a beautiful watch, but I also have an f91 & a data bank calculator ( the model no escapes me sorry ) & I enjoy wearing them as much as my Seamaster de ville or my U Boat. I've never understood watch snobbery & like you say, the whole experience of buying & opening your chosen time piece is unique & whether its high end or budget I personally get as much enjoyment from looking for a quirky casio or Ingersoll, than I do trying to find a Frank Muller Casablanca.
In the 80s I had an F91W (or a predecessor version). It wasn’t fancy, but it definitely did everything that was required of it and, being a quartz watch, kept excellent time. I’m very pleasantly surprised that these watches have made a comeback as fashion accessories.
