Many of you have been asking me about my custom harness safety line that you see in my videos. This video shows the tree stand harness safety line I made as well as how to make it. It adds a lot of safety and bonus features. Been using it for a couple years and love it! Keep in mind this is my personal system and I dont recommend it for everyone as I have never fallen with it to fully test it. I trust it, but that doesnt mean I take any responsibility for what you do or use.
Here is a link to the rope I use from amazon. I am an affiliate for amazon and do receive earnings from the purchase thru the amazon link.

Jason I understand that this is convenient for you. All that said you could run into a side loading of the carabiner because you have the straight shank of carabiner getting side loaded by the round surface of the tree in a fall. The carabiner is designed for loading from the two ends and the side load on the shank could cause failure. You should also use a locking gate carabiner because in a fail you can have bouncing where the carabiner goes from loaded to unloaded fairly rapidly which can cause the gate to open and will drastically changes the load handling capabilities of the carabiner. All that said a possible solution is the change the carabiner to a locking gate style (screw or auto locking) and move its position in the system to your tether on you harness. To secure the rope to the tree girth hitch the rope to the tree by feeding one end of the rope through the loop end made by the knot at the end of the rope and pulling the slack out if you want it to stay tight to the tree and not fall double wrap around the tree. The Prusik can be used to hook into the carabiner. Is done that way the Prusik would need to be made from a smaller diameter rope for it to work properly and reliably in a fall. I am coming at this from a rock climbing background and knowing safety standards from that. Odds are high that nothing will happen but I just want to see you use the safest system because it only takes one fall to end it all.
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 5 лет назад
Great points! I did take alot of that into consideration and did quite a bit of research. A locking carbiner is a great idea. as for the side loading, when the rope is pulled like in a fall its not really side loading as the tree prevents it from side loading and causes it to be a linear pull like it suppose to. These points are greatly appreciated and gives people some fantastic points to consider. I also greatly appreciate you taking the time to explain in such detail. I never thought about bounce releasing the carabiner as in a fall it would be pulled tight and jammed to the tree. But I have a bunch of lockers and no reason not to use one. Thanks again for the very informative and great comment. The girth hitch method i did try and dont like for 3 reasons. One its to hard to use when using the safety line as a back up going around branches where I have to release my lineman belt. second reason is they seem to loose up on the tree and sag. and a 3rd reason is I dont want to run a smaller diameter prussik rope. I know they are strong but I dont want to trust anything smaller than 8mm personally. That would mean I have to go with a 10mm rope and a 8mm prusik.

Nicely done my friend. One of the big features to this set up, is exactly like you said, really quiet. The straps that come with most of the treestand safety harness have those old school metal buckets that not only clank on your stand walking into the wood with every step. Even if you was lucky enough to have that metal buckle in a pocket or something, it is noisy setting it up. Secondary, this is going to be much much quicker. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us. I appreciate you taking the time to make this video and share this method with us. Thanks again my friend. I hope you knee heals up quickly. I had a similar knee problem a few years back, even broke the bone up there, so the healing process took a little longer than the actual surgery, but I can say, the thing healed up better than new and is now my stronger knee. So here's to hoping your knee heals better than new as well. Have a blessed week. Dale

Thanks! Yeah alot of advantages to this set up. Knee is healing good and I'm at the point now where I can go up and down stairs good. Still have some popping in it all the time. They said I would not need surgery. But I'm still might to clean up scar tissue or something later. What a pain in the but.

Jason- as I make my way through your videos it’s becoming clear that your vids are THE BEST in terms of being informative on hunting gear, equipment techniques, mods, etc. Thanks for your hard work. Any way you can make (or recommend) a video that shows how to properly lash?

Thank you. Glad you are enjoying the content. A video on lashing like lashing the ends of the ropes in the video? If that is what you mean I have a video that shows how I do it. Search my channel for a video called how to serve a bow string. That is exactly how I do all my rope lashings. Even if you jist use your hands to wind it the start and finish knots are the same.

Great video. Would there be an issue using a Ropeman 1 instead of the Prusik knot?
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 4 года назад
you could definitely use a rope-man 1 but I think it would be a waste of money. reason being that prusik knot is only touched 1 time when you lock in and then again when you get down. so a prusik knot is simple and effective. the rope-man shines on a lineman's belt as you have to adjust in and out a few times each climb. so there the rope-man get used more and is justified and adds value. on the safety line not so much.

@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 4 года назад
All I did was put a loop in the line and tie an overhand knot to take up the slack. Did it to shorten up the line so if i do fall its not to far. The rope is stiff enough that it's really easy to undo the knot.

love your videos. hope your season is going well. Im looking at going to saddle hunting and I was wondering if your safety harness and linemans belt ideas are the right types of rope for a tether and safety line for saddle hunting.
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 4 года назад
Yes and no. The linemans belt 100% yes. For my safety line is dynamic meaning it has some stretch to protect me in a fall. In a saddle you dont really fall as you always have tension on your tether line. So I would use a static non stretching rope for the tether line. You could use the same 11mm rope as the linemans belt or buy pre made tether lines with the correct loops already made from companies like tethrd.com and other saddle companies.

Another great video. I have seen many of your videos and enjoy every one. One question, with the setup you are showing, have you ever fallen? How did you recover? A neighbor of my cousins fell from a treestand with a full body harness, was unable to recover, and died. Since then, we only hunt with a rock climbing harness, use appropriate rigging and knots with a full length rope(35 ft or so), so if we fall we can lower ourselves to the ground. Not trying to be a debbie downer here and poo poo what you are doing. Any system is better than no system. You show a lot of common sense in your hunting practices. I am just curious if you have tried other systems. Thank you and keep em coming.
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 5 лет назад
Excellent question. I have never fallen with the safety line. I have fallen with the lineman belt. I have hung from a safety line to demonstrate how to self recover when I taught hunters safety. I have always been able to recover by simply grabbing my climbing stick and stepping on it then can go back up or down. When you fall you are gonna drop a foot or so and if you have your sticks hung correctly you should stop down to where your sticks are. Atleast that is how it always worked in my demonstrations. Please tell your neighbor I'm very sorry for his loss. If you need more explanation or anything just ask. By the way, absolutely nothing wrong with how you are currently doing it. Also I hear the rock harness has the least shock in a fall and is the safest.

May I ask you a question? I built your lineman’s rope based on your configurations and love it! Any reason that you do not use the Ropeman on this Safety Line as opposed tp the Prusik knot? I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us all.
@SamkoTradBow
@SamkoTradBow 4 года назад
For the safety line I use a prusik since you only adjust one time and leave it. Where as on the linemans belt you are letting slack in and out a bunch of times up and down the tree. The prusik is lightweight, quiet and easy and works perfect for the safety line.
