My Dad's GTO: 1965 Original Owner, Unrestored, Tri-Power, 4 speed! 

Thanks. Yeah, my dad is a rare exception. Back in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s not too many people were worried about preserving original cars like this.

Thanks so much! I also love the 70 GTO. Growing up, my dad's friend had a white one. Very cool car.

The 64 was a lot lighter, and so a little quicker, but the 65 was the best styling of all. I love both years. My dad was a Buick dealer in those years, but was almost a Pontiac/Cadillac dealer, instead. Anyway, it's kinda too bad, because his initials were GTO.

@@dougoverhoff7568 Friends of mine bought a 64 GTO 389/4-speed and wrecked a few months later with only 1600 miles on the odometer. Fell asleep behind the wheel. Hit a tree.

@@1940limited A friend of mine, who had special ordered a mustang GT fastback in 69, It had some special high performance add ons from the factory, and said it was the fastest car he'd ever been in. He let his wife drive it on the first day he got it, and she totalled it! It makes me sick to think about it, but I can't imagine how he must have felt. True story.

@@1940limited BTW, my dad, who was a Buick dealer, had narcolepsy. Not too many knew what that was in years past, so medication for it was not really available. Anyway, In the mid 60's he fell asleep twice while driving home on the hwy, (hwy 66, incidentally)from his business, which was about 100 miles from our home at the time. Once, it happened in a brand new Riviera, and once in an Electra 225, both cars were pretty much totalled, but my dad walked away, fortunately. My mom never even knew, and she's 96 now, and she still doesnt know. To the end of his days, my dad pretty much always insisted that we all drive big, heavy cars, because of the safety they provide.

@@dougoverhoff7568 I know a lady right now who drives a 90 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham because she feels safer in a big car. Interesting your dad was able to keep his accidents away from mom. Do you remember what year the two Buicks were?

my father has one that is in the same condition unrestored with 20k miles on it triples 4 speed dealer AC and its the really rare yellow.

Cool car but he does not drive it like it needs to be driven. He shifts like it’s a 8ton diesel dump truck. Way too carful.

@@RipRider916 In 99% of cases I'd completely agree,but since this motor has never been opened up, all the gaskets and everything in the block,tranny,and rear-end being over 50 years old, I wouldn't open her up either.

Survivors are the hot ticket today. This car is worth much more unrestored and unmolested than it is totally gone through. No collector would dare alter this car.

I’d upgrade the brakes. That single pot master cylinder is asking for failure. Then how “original” will the car be? 😀

Yeah, my heart skips a beat when I see a Pontiac from 1960 through about 1980. John Delorean really worked magic on that Division, and was just a brilliant car guy. Too bad GM didn't know they had solid gold in their hands, and then just let him fall through the fingers. Just about that time, GM started to nosedive.

In high school I had a 66 Ventura 389 2 barrel and that moved pretty good too for a big car.

We almost bought an iris mist 65 back in the 90's but it needed too much work at the time. Those are pretty rare.

Paul: Many people share your view of the 60's cars. Respectfully, I would urge you in the strongest possible terms, if you haven't done so recently, to visit a dealer and test drive any 392 powered Charger/Challenger/V8 Mustang GT never mind a HC/GT500/Z06 Corvette. The new cars deliver absurd performance with reliability, handling and BRAKES the old stuff can't dream of. I am biased naturally, but Dodge does a beautiful job of building a modern muscle car. That said, the 60's cars DO have an elemental simplicity that modern technology doesn't offer. My daily drive Scat Pack now is a..wonder because I drove drum brake cars from that era, the pitiful "garbage" that was available in late 70''s & early 80's from Detroit when V8's struggled to make 200..crank HP and in the early 90's my then brand new 5.0 V8 Mustang had enough "take off" parts almost for a 2nd car by the time it was..built right with all the welding and bits that had to be..tossed or fortified. Now my 2020 Dodge needed almost..nothing. A set of Hooker headers, a catch can and cold air intake....done drive the car. It combines beautifully the great things we liked then AND none of the hassles that kept you under hood in the car, or in the garage..regularly. Great cars in both the old days and now, BUT if you sleep on RIGHT NOW you may look back in the future with regret. May you find tire smoke always in your rearview mirror when you stand on yours. 👍

I have to agree back in the seventies I had a 1967 Malibu SS 327 4 barrel qudrajet with the powerglide. I'm sorry that's how you got em when you paid 800 for your Blu Malibu. But a fun car.

@@victorwilburn3498 That's very well said. Todays cars are worlds apart from the cars of the 60's and rightfully so. I think what people miss most about the muscle cars of the 60's and early 70's is just the 60's and 70's in general. We brought back the cars now but we can never get back those days. Life is so much more complicated now and mostly from our own doing.

@@stevet8121 Your right about a more "complicated" world now. In terms of cars, I like the old stuff for the mechanical simplicity they had for a sunny day..drive. I prefer however, the new cars for everyday use because they eliminate all the old time hassles of reliability. Do I..love all the touchscreen features in my car now? Honestly, I would prefer the controls to be simple, BUT the gain in performance and reliability makes it overall a improvement, at least for..me.

Typical silly nostalgia. A 5 year old Toyota Camry is three times the car that thing was new. More power, better ride, more comfort *much safer* and easier to maintain.
