A good warm-up is an important part of any musician's practice routine, and in this video, Prof. Jinjoo Cho runs us through a set of exercises that she does daily to begin her violin practice sessions. While geared specifically towards violinists, these exercises have elements that are applicable to any musician, as they focus on accurate tuning, connecting with your body, and more.

Really love this! I’m a professional violist in my late 50s and the warm-up process has become very important to me. I ask a lot of my professional friends what their warm-up procedures are and they’re remarkably shy/uncomfortable about sharing any detailed info! Really grateful to see a video from someone who is happy to share. Thanks for this!

For me warming up is something that is constantly evolving, as my technique and body changes. So I think about what's most important in my playing "right now." Also there are a few exercises and movements I do off the violin, before I even touch the instrument. And I think a "mental warmup" can be helpful too, especially if you are changing gears in the middle of the day.

Hi. I'm a Violist. When I begin my teacher recommend me the same things. But as a begginer, I would really spend more time on stretching shoulders, arms and fingers, because violin-viola is really something rare to everyone's body, and also sound point and string crossing excercise. Every violin or viola begginer book (Laoureux 1 for example) begin with long notes scales for this reason, it also help to assure your right and left hand posture, and start with your tuning ability. Happy practicing ;)

Starting with long tones may be good for some but when you said you like to do long tones to feel the "flow of the energy..." (1:31) do you realize that as you say that you are showing (bowing above the instrument) a much quicker motion which, I believe is more conducive to a better relaxed bow arm to start with. Long tones require greater control which means more engagement of functional tension between opposing muscles and tendons. As I said at the start, this might not be the best way for some to start with.
