MY DEAF FAMILY/ DOSSIER (CC) 

Deaf culture was so interesting and heartbreaking for me to learn. I had taken a class in college called, “Intro into the Deaf Community.” I learned soo much. Which made me want to learn ASL. I’m still a baby in the sign language world, with two semesters under my belt. But I love watching your videos, and understanding a lot of what you say without the captions. And when I see a Deaf person out in the community, I just always want to go up and sign with them 💛 Much love from Ohio!

I lost my hearing 12 years ago after two bone marrow aspirations totally unexpected at 26 yrs old and I cant hear a thing. I walked out of the hospital deaf 😳. I'm bilaterally deaf. I had cochlear implant surgery on one ear as no one in my family would learn sign language and my fiance left me after I lost my hearing and my friends walked away. I only use my cochlear implant out in public or on the phone. After being in the hearing world for 26 yrs then to deaf, my cochlear implant sounds robotic and I hate it. Being deaf surprisingly has eased my anxiety I suffered. I love the silence. Sorry I accidentally deleted my original comment. i love how you sign slowly, it makes it really easy for me (im learning sing) to follow along! i dont know if thats your regular pace, but it really helps me to follow without captions sometimes :)

When i was born, they thought i was hearing because I passed it too. Then my parents was confused that i didn’t come to them when they called my name often when I was three years old. My sister was kinda figuring that i was born deaf. They took me to check on my ears. They got in shocked. Last year, i told my mom that i can hear noises like very loud but she didn’t believe. I can hear from my dog’s bark or yell.

I am 2nd generation. My dad is hard of hearing and I am born profoundly deaf. But I am proud to be deaf person.

I’m 15 and I have bilateral hearing loss since I was 3. Somehow when I was born, I passed the hearing test that the doctors conducted. Gradually my hearing depleted and have been wearing two hearing aids. I also been learning ASL in the last 10 years. Great Video, You are inspiring

I’m a preschool teacher and I’ve made a few attempts to learn ASL but it’s hard for me to learn on my own from a book.

Wow Thank You A lot For Telling Us About Your Family History... I'm the Only One in My Family deaf/HOH. I Got Spinal Meningitis When I Was A Baby and When I Was a Toddler I Had Many Chronic Ear Infections That Caused Much Damage to My Inner Ears... I Grew Up in Mainstream School and Speak Also Use Hearing Aid Now as an Adult but Wish My Parents Would Have Got Me Hearing Aids as Child. I Didn't Start Learning ASL Until I Was Older My Parents Forced Me to Live in a Hearing World and Hearing Culture 😒🙄😩🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

The peace and serenity of this video is actually very relaxing and I find myself totally focusing on the story and her expressions. Interesting.

This was really interesting! And I kinda get the discrimination around the deaf community because my mom was very encouraged to get an abortion from the doctors because I could have been deaf. She refused the abortion but still, she was very upset about the negativity around me possibly being deaf. Aaand at the end I'm hearing🙈

I like that your captions are a simplified version of what you sign. I feel like I don’t understand signing people’s videos enough without captions, but I don’t like when I’m always reading the captions and never get to watch signing, so I appreciate that I can read about what you are saying and then watch you sign more about it.

Wowsers Cheyenna! Love this video, thanks for sharing your family background with us. Most hearing people think that deaf or hard of hearing people grew up in hearing families. So watching this video, is a real myth buster. Then you have your friends who are 6th generation deaf. Especially when back in the day, deaf people having families were very much discouraged. Amazing!!!! Please do more videos like this. I'd love to know more about different spectrums of deafness, especially the "cookie bite" type of deafness. 💗👂

This was really interesting, thank you for explaining in so much detail about how you grew up, I never knew hard of hearing people where so mistreated. I am wondering since you can hear your dogs barking, can you hear yourself making noise? You have a great laugh and I bet it puts smiles on a lot of peoples faces.

I was born hearing then when I was 3 yrs I got sick or car accident my hear was down becomes hard of hearing I used to hearing aid since stop use hearing aid make me annoying so later become deaf but still little hear sometimes and start elementary school use sign asl now on but I’m not perfect at All just normal that way what my skills for sign ASL 😊so nice meeting you Cheyenne ,,,

Can you, like pleasee make a video series for teaching a ASL and of course continue with your usual videos... i know that we are asking too much but i just cant help my self trying to learn ASL, or you can sign i little bit slower or to recommend us how to learn ASL (site, yt videos, or some kind of books etc.) You are the best, love youuu ❤❤❤

I'm hearing person, but man that's insane crazy. This year in school, I met someone deaf in English/Math his name is Farhan plus he had autism and it pretty much hard to understand what he saying. However, his assistant tells me understand taught us the words to teach by using ASL. It’s great🙂 anyway, thanks for sharing your story. I enjoyed it 👍🏽🛐 Be Blessed and have a great weekend🙂💘☮️

My mum has been partially deaf since she was a toddler, but she never learned sign language and she lipreads instead. When we are in busy places with lots of people, or there is a lot of background noise it can be difficult for her to understand us and my brother and I both grew up thinking shouting was normal because she has always spoken loudly (she always tried to explain to us it’s because sometimes she can’t hear the sound of her own voice and so she speaks loudly to compensate) I don’t how common my experience is but even though she doesn’t know sign language and neither do we - we kind of have our own language with her based on facial expressions, hand and head movements? Like if we are across the room we could have a conversation just between us and know exactly what the other person means without needing to use words. My dad doesn’t understand it at all, it seems to be something that just formed naturally between my mum, my brother and I.

My grandmother lost her hearing in one ear from measles. It's odd, because we never considered her HoH her whole life, and she never felt she struggled with it. But as she aged, she lost hearing in her remaining ear and now needs a hearing aid to communicate, which is actually kinda frustrating, because we actually use ASL with my son, who has speech apraxia, so I wish she had learned ASL when she was younger

this comment is to make a record of my declaration of learning sign just to understand what you are saying and to understand this one kid who started working at my job a couple of weeks ago. He is hearing impaired and is fluent in ASL. I can hear, and I hear a little too well on one side due to a faulty eustachian tube so I listen to people more carefully than most. I read lips. But, in your videos, sometimes certain words you mouth are not clear to me. Also, the new kid at my job does not seem to know how to read lips and NONE of us know sign so it was hard to work as a team. It was a mess. sooooo..... I am a nobody. Not a boss, not a leader. I just want to be able to understand people who sign and I want to be able to sign to others. So, Here I go. How long does it take to learn fluent ASL? Regardless, I start today!

I only know ASL 1, I’m trying to learn more. I have an auditory process disorder so I’m bad at speaking other languages, so in college I took ASL to learn and I picked up on it. I use ASL at work some of my coworkers are Deaf. If I don’t know what they sign I ask them to finger spell it.

Was the fever your father had called Scarlett fever? My stepfather had it when he was a baby, and loss a chunk of his hearing because of the fever.

You know how there's different languages like: Spanish, German, English, French etc is there different types of ASL like a French one version, Spanish version, English version etc

hi!! I’m 16 and I’ve worn hearing aids since I was 3. I had a double ear infection and ended up with nerve damage that has gotten worse over the years to a now 65% hearing loss. I really want to learn sign language as I used baby sign until I was 5 but forgot it when I went to a hearing school. I’ve only been in hearing school and haven’t ever received any speech therapy or extra help in school because my parents view of it was to treat me the same as every kid and I’d figure it out. I want to be an audiologist and be able to help others but I’m scared to not be accepted in the deaf community because I never got the chance to be in it. Any suggestions or help would be so appreciated I’m in Houston Texas!!💛💛

If u want to save ASL u have to let people in. How do I know if I understand u without captions. In my country each talkers captions are a different colour so u can see dialogue in action.

I can't believe how different ASL is to BSL. It's almost two different languages even though America and England both use the same language.

Do you have any recommendations for speech therapists who work with students who are deaf/hh. I want to promote a healthy learning environment where they don't feel so much pressure to use their voice. I'm still learning sign...but it's also my job to help them communicats. Help! Lol.

banging a saucepan and chey didn't wake up...same happened to me... I was sleeping in the crib and I my parents and aunt were waking me up They were shouting and banging pans everywhere, it was very noisy. Then my dad decided to try something out and whispered into my ear, "Barney." And I woke up.😂

Yeah, it's interesting you point out that mouthing your words doesn't make it possible to understand for hearing people. That was weird when they kept calling you out for it in the Docuseries, cause you're only saying the words, but you're still using ASL grammar, so it doesn't cater to hearing people at all. To me, it is like people who gesticulate with their hands a lot. If a person doesn't know ASL but uses their hands for emphasis while they talk, it doesn't make it easier to understand. And they're not trying to use sign when they do that, it's actually a brain thing where people move their hands to help themselves focus on their thoughts (it can also be a cultural thing). I would imagine mouthing while one signs is a similar thing, kinda like mouthing the words while one reads
