This is so heartbreaking! As a hearing student at Gally , I’ve heard a lot about Deaf elitism, but I’ve never experienced anything first hand. I knew you attended Gallaudet but I rarely ever saw you on campus or in any of the dining halls. Now knowing that you’ve been bullied and harassed by other Deaf students is really disheartening :( I’m glad you shared this

All I can say is WOW! I’m so proud of my beautiful granddaughter Cheyenna and her wonderful friend Kari for speaking out about their experiences. Ladies, your courage is amazing and your strength unstoppable . You are both strong, beautiful women who will overcome all your life challenges! I actually was thinking of applying to galludet when doing my college apps 4 years ago but my dad warned me that since I didn’t know sign, wear a CI, came from an all hearing family, and was mainstreamed my whole life that I would be rejected by other students and could potentially experience bullying. I never faced bullying for my deafness in my life so that thought terrified me. After watching this video, I know realized my Dad was right and I’m glad I decided to go to CSUN. I still experienced some elitism from other deaf students but it wasn’t extreme as y’all had it at gally. I’m proud of you girls for sticking up for yourselves and being vulnerable with us. Thank you for sharing your stories and your feelings are always valid!! 🤍✨

I went to Gallaudet University in 2006, it was the biggest mistake I've ever made. My mother even did warn me not to go there. I ignored my mother's warning and went there. I was so excited. It was my first time going to a biggest deaf institution in the world after I graduated from mainstream. I stayed there for 1 and half year then I left when I got so fed up how many deaf people are so damn immature. They would make up some stories about you to ignite dramas. They pretend to be your friends. They called me hearing because I talk while I sign. I was like wtf. I am DEAF. I talk because my hearing family dont use sign language. Men would use you for sex. Women would do anything to break up your relationships. They love to gossip. One time they did throw eggs on me from dorm window for no reasons. I was bullied for no reasons. Gallaudet University is completely 100% trash! Not worth it. After I left Gallaudet University and went to another university it was the best decision ive ever made. I met so many wonderful people, made friends, they all are mature, have goals, very social. Gallaudet....NOPE! I wish I never went there. Not worth it. I would never be part of the Deaf Culture because of my bad experiences at Gally. I won't be proud of it. I would NEVER lay my foot at Gallaudet ever ever again. I am so mad to think about it. I was SHOCKED to see how deaf people at Gally behave like 12 years old. Omg!

I watched you on Deaf U Cheyenna. And the whole time I thought to myself that this woman is one of only two or three that comes off as genuine and authentic. I love your energy and glad you were able to remove yourself from an environment that wasn’t lifting you up. You deserve that. Look forward to seeing more of what you do moving forward. You are smart, beautiful and strong. ❤️ (also glad to meet your friend. She also seems real and authentic!!).

As a hearing individual, I had no idea these kinds of "elite" groups were so big and influential in the community. I'm aware that anyone can be bullied, but I guess I was ignorant to the fact that the deaf community isn't always so accepting of OTHER Deaf/HoH members. It pains my heart to hear your stories. I hope you two can learn from the experience and continue to learn and grow, you both deserve happiness. Much love ❤

Authentic, individualistic women are a threat to popular types that haven’t found themselves and exist on a superficial level. They have to tear your down and belittle you because they want to remain on top and because standing next to someone with beauty and substance is terrifying to them. You clearly have a vibrant and electric personality as well as being a kind hearted human. Your friend seems like a sweetheart too and it makes me so sad that those emotionally immature people feel so insecure that they need to abuse others to feel good.

I just watched Deaf U and I really feel as if I can relate to you! I am hearing but I did go to Gally and I struggled with the same things. I was so excited to go, I consider myself to be fluent in sign language and felt great about how well I was doing there, but a few weeks into my first semester one of my classmates found me in the computer lab and asked me, “ Why are you here?!” It hurt my feelings a lot and I felt confused because I never used my voice on campus, wouldn’t even answer phone calls, and tried so hard to be respectful to everyone around me. Luckily I did find a group of friends who lifted me up and accepted me! I’m so glad you opened up about this and I think it will help others to feel less alone.

Deaf "elitism" is like hearing folks who come from a long line of "money" whether it's "old or new". Being part of a small group that has something special out of most of the community can foster an attitude that because they were blessed to come from deaf families and good deaf institution they get to be the gate-keepers! Cheyenna, however, comes from a great family and place of life. I am proud to know her and her family and the courage she has shown by speaking her truth. I hope that the " I am Deaf enough" movement really ignites the rest of the community to tell these "elite" that enough is enough and they just need to sit down and reassess themselves!

I'm deaf and grew up mainstream but my parents are hearing. I am a PSE signer. My signing skills depends on my mood like I sign terrible when I'm feeling tired but sign better when I'm fully energetic and focused. I never attended Gally. I went to NTID/RIT. It's disgusting that Deaf elitism exists. Thank you for sharing your experiences. You deserve better than any of that crap from them...screw them! I wish I could give you both a hug! I'm really sorry that you had to go through that girls.. :( As a hearing impaired person who's not from the U.S., I always thought a university for the deaf must be such a cool thing, since there's nothing like this at my home country. But I wasn't aware there's a rivalry about "who's deaf enough".. That really sucks! Might sound a bit cheesy, but aren't we all supposed to stick together..? 😅 Hope you can overcome these painful memories. Very couragious of you sharing that with us!

You both are lucky to have each other as good friends. Those 'elites' are really sad bunch of people who attends university with high school attitude. They've never really grown as a person. Pathetic really. Keep your chins up, be yourself and keep it real.

I remember this as part of my Gallaudet experience as well. The environment of competitive shallowness. A lot of what you two point out are conflicts between shallow people vs. deep-thinking people. It can happens in the deaf schools too, but in my experience the public schools were much worse. At least I could see it in ASL and deal with it rather than it be hidden with hearing people. Still don't like it and to this day I avoid situations with shallow vindictive people like you mention.

Bullies are jealous of whoever they bully so they want to make you feel as bad as they do. I've been bullied plenty and I learned it has NOTHING to do with me there is nothing wrong with me and there is nothing wrong with you it is on them. You are so amazing and beautiful so they envy you so much I wish they could just be happy for you. I love you and you rock

That attitude of who gets to be deaf enough is pretty toxic and narrow-minded - as if many Deaf people don't come from all walks of life (I mean, really?). I completely understand the anxiety, especially being a content creator, that you noticed many eyes are on you and their assumptions of you, Cheyenna. It's challenging and nerve-wracking to be in that position at times - they absolutely have no idea. With your loved ones who stand by you through thick and thin, keep on walking & keep growing, Cheyenna & Kari!

It's really heartbreaking to know that hearing people will be mean to the deaf because they're deaf, but the deaf will be mean to the deaf for not being deaf enough.

So I haven't seen anyone mention her by name, but Tessa was really rude in DEAF U. I don't know if she was just portrayed that way for the drama, but I watched the show twice now, and Tessa really just rubs me the wrong way. They really only put her in the show a few times, and it was mainly to be the "elite" queen B drama queen. Not a good look Tessa, lol.

When I was a student at RIT/NTID I actually felt the same reactions from Gallaudet students when they were visiting at RIT.

Hi Cheyenna! I saw you on Deaf U & thought you were great! I thought a lot about what you & Kari said about not wanting to pull others down while sharing your truth about being bullied. The bottom line is this: you have the right to tell your story. If anyone else looks bad in it then they should have treated you better.

People who disliked it are bullies from Gallaudet

I remember watching the Netflix show and how the girls were making fun of Cheyenne for moving her mouth too much when she signed and all I can say is fuck them! I was born HoH and am totally deaf without my hearing aids. I did go to hearing school up to grade 11 and decided to switch to the deaf school for grade 12. I was blown away at how petty everyone is and mostly I was treated really well, until I wasn’t. Having a breakdown in relationship with one friend can destroy your ability to be friends with everyone. But ultimately they will get their karma, bullying is never ever going to be ok and for Gauladet to foster that environment makes them just as complicit to it and unless they’re prepared to end the pattern of abuse, it’s going to take people like you two, to air their dirty laundry. I’m super proud you’re not allowing them to has the upper hand. The only way people heal, is by saying you don’t have power over me any longer so major thumbs up!

It really sucks that you had that kind of experience at Gallaudet. It's obviously that people who did to you was jealous for some reason. Unfortunately I have seen many people experienced that when I was at Gallaudet and it need to be stopped, period! There's good and bad people out there, but so called deaf "elites" that made them think it's ok to bully on other people which is really lame. Thanks for shared your story!

Thank you for your story! It saddens me that such attitude is still the same as that which was prevalent back in the 1980s. I myself decided on not going to Gallaudet, having witnessed what had happened to a friend at the time. There were other reasons, too, but I knew that I was different enough, just having been mainstreamed, having "a good voice", and being an introvert, that I would have run into similar experiences as yours. Be strong, and forge your own path, and just be YOU! 🤟🏽

Even though im a hearing person i still want to learn sign language and explore the deaf community and ofcrse it doesnt matter if ur deaf or hearing at the end of the day we are humans who should be treated fairly!!!

Thank you for sharing! I am a sophomore year at Gallaudet University. I think my experience is almost similar to Kari. One thing, they look at me as a bad person. I don't know where are they find from? When I am with my boyfriend since he is very sporty so they said ”oh I am sorry and I didn't mean to hurt.” I was like it's a waste of time in our lives. I was move on and feel unsafe around them. They didn't move on. That's not our problem. That's their problem!

That type of bullying is awful because it always leaves me wondering “Why don’t they like me?” and always spirals into “Why don’t I know how to be a person??” Relational aggression is the term for it btw. Validating knowing there’s a label.

As a deaf person, and having a well known name in the deaf community, my dad works at Gally, I’m planning on going there for college, I’m glad you shared your story!! I’ve been bullied before, and I get it. However, my bulling experiences weren’t that bad. I’m sorry that happened to you, and I hope you’ll be ok! You and Kari are my heroes!! 🤟🏼 🤟🏼

I came to your channel from Deaf U - I thought you were one of the most authentic and interesting people on the show. It's really enlightening to me as a hearing person to understand your experiences and the deaf culture (which especially at GU seemed to be toxic). I found this conversation really interesting, in a sad way, and I hope you two sharing your perspectives and experiences will help others who are at GU or struggling with deaf culture in some way. We are all just people, individual people. Be kind, folks.

I am hearing. I JUST started to learn ASL because I am a visual person and I knew I would enjoy learning this language. But now I'm not going to try so hard. The Deaf community sounds toxic. I am constantly hearing stories from people who are deaf and hard of hesring struggling under the judgment and pressures of OTHER people in the Deaf community. If theyre going to shoot down and shun others who share the same struggles in this world over petty and trivial stuff such as attending a mainstream school or a small deaf school, there is no way they would ever easily accept a hearing person trying to learn their language and culture. That is a really good way to continue to isolate the deaf community by shunning even its own members and making them feel deeply bad about themselves. I'm sorry you ladies went through this and I feel like you're the type of people I'd want to hang out with and get to know.

I was bullied really badly in middle school and it’s just so awful think that people can be bullied their whole life but sometimes that’s just the way the world is and I’m glad you had the courage to speak up and to get yourself out of that situation by switching schools, it’s never easy and I’m sorry u had to go through that

I haven't watched your video yet but I'm a student currently at Gallaudet. I was born deaf, raised hearing, have one CI and know very little ASL. I've... been so horribly suicidal due to some stuff that's happened to me here. The total isolation, the feeling of being "other" and my roommate, who I thought had my back, turning out to be someone I couldn't... really trust. I have a feeling that I'm feeling a little of what you're feeling, but probably not to the same magnitude. I'm terrified to leave my dorm and talk to people in fear of what they'll say about me. I just want to leave. I'm tired of being in an environment where I'm reminded of my hearing school career where I was bullied for being deaf. Thank you for posting this video. When I'm in a much better headspace (and all transferred out), I'm gonna come back, watch this, talk more under this comment and just... reflect, in a way. Thank you.

Thanks for sharing! Went to NTID back in 1980's and many students there were like you. This bullying, I did the research bec believe it or not it occurred in my deaf women group in Seattle, aged 58 to 70. 70 yr old lady is my arch nemesis, she worked hard at looking good for her age. I'm targeted by her with underminings, belittlement, backstabbing so I left this group for self-care and be with friends who lift me up. I learned that toxic people are insecure and jealous and so put others down to feel superior and feel better. So when those people who bullied you, it is a reflection of their emotional state which aren't in a happy place. It's their thoughts that has no reflection on you whatsoever. Also, remind yourselves that compassionate, kind hearted people don't go around tearing others down. One simple example..at deaf expo, this deaf entitled lady said hello to my friend and then put her down "I don't wear t-shirt" as a vieled insult to my friend who was wearing a t-shirt and walked away. This ruined my friend's day...well this lady who did this.. she's cold inside, self-critical and often puts people down to feel better = unhealthy. For us, we just look to them with compassion and let them go, we need to surround ourselves with healthy people who show dignity and respect. Let this be your lesson to help others and intervene when you see relational aggression going on (bullying). As research shows, this relational aggression is highest amongst women and it occurs in workplace too, many lawsuits bec of loss of productivity due to undue stress and anxiety just like you described. Again, thank you for sharing and remember that those who bully shows that insecurities are going on inside them, they need power and superiority to feel okay themselves. Google it and do research, you'll find it goes back to their emotional make up. One story, deaf woman was bullied in school then worked as a counselor, years later went to hi school reunion and faced her bully, this bully was popular in hi school but years later lives in poverty with abusive husband. You two, you're strong, empathetic and compassionate! Turn this bad experience into a learning lesson. You've become stronger because of it, that's a plus. ~ Rock on!

This sounds horrible I've experienced a weirdly similar thing at a place I worked at for 5 years. The whole situation took me to a low place within myself and for years i just questioned if I was good enough. There was a huge blow out in the end and I broke ties with everyone but my closest friend, similar to you guys. Its been a year since this happened and theirs been another issue with the people who really hurt me in the end and I had a call today that had a chance for me to maybe speak up about it and get it told and this really inspired me to take that chance so thank you for that :) You guys are so strong I know the hard path it is to getting okay with who you are and just loving everything about who you are again :) Hugs and Support sent your way. I’m sorry to hear it. U both show really good heart and just human being. I’m glad you shared this video to show other it’s not okay bullies to other deaf. They shouldn’t judge on u it’s very wrong . You guys are so strong for sharing your experience! I was born and grew up in Delaware and went to DSD honestly I realized all that and took a whole different path.. if the deaf community were able to be less judge-mental then it we may finally get to the point we actually have a community 😢🤦‍♂️ henceforth meaning Apps for dead’s like deaf tube category or deaf toks and so on so on. We don’t even have our own actual Channel on any cable or series on TV!! If we all actually supported and got together we actually could be a community HEARD! 🤟🏼🤟🏼

Kari and Cheyenna, thank you for sharing your stories. Seeing your stories brought back bad memories for me. I remember that after I left a miserable situation, my former classmates tried to GASLIGHT me! They Refused to accept responsibility for their cruel behavior, They say "that is Deaf culture". Not in my book. Bullying is bullying. Period. Being blunt is DIFFERENT from being a bully. Bullies win when no one speaks up. When we speak up, we win. Often these bullies have traumatic issues that has NOTHING to do with us. They target anyone they think are "weak" or "chicken". You are strong women. You have the right to live the way you want to. No one can tell you how to live. It is your life. When many people in the Deaf community makes it clear that Bullying will NOT be tolerated, we ALL win. IMHO, Gallaudet University needs to confront the bullying issue. Make it clear that bullying will Not be tolerated.

C: almost every night I have cried to sleep. Me: It makes me cry. I'm the same as you feel and I never love school. And people also always treat me badly. I am lucky today that people already less bad for me. We are learning about it. We are the best people.❤️

hii ! first, thank you so much for sharing your stories. im sure it was sup hard to open up abt it. second, I def have some similar experiences. I am deaf yet I dont go to deaf schools or have a deaf family. this group at my high school, ALWAYS look for something to use against me. they ALWAYS make rumors up abt me to make me look bad. why would they waste their time to make rumors up? they once made a rumor that I slept with many different guys even it was NOT true. they also made a rumor that I once cheated on my ex boyfriend which was NOT true either. there were so many more but, after watching this video I finally feel not alone. so your stories meant so much. thank you so much for sharing

I was at Gally 20+ years ago and it was the exact same way then too. It’s tough feeling like you have to prove yourself. If you can find a group of friends who love and accept you for who you are and help you to love and accept yourself also, then it’s easier to ignore the haters 🤟🏼

I'm the younger brother of a deaf sister. She went to CSDR in the 70's. Our family never learned ASL. It wasn't encouraged back then. She married her high school sweetheart that she met at CSDR. They have two boys and 5 grandchildren all hearing. Their boys are hearing but obviously their first language was ASL. They provided their voices as they grew up and until technology grew up too. Isn't it great that technology has progressed from TTY to Zoom and texts. Thank you for expressing your feelings. They are common among all groups of people. We all experience anxiety and happiness. Sometimes we get hurt and we are truly blessed when we are lifted up by good friends and family. May you continue to be blessed by having good friends whether they are just like you or very different.

Soo sorry to hear about your experience at Gally. You both are very strong young women and while this experience was emotionally and physically hard, you both have come through it stronger than u were. You are a positive influence for many young Deaf individuals and your story will help others going through the same thing. Stay encouraged. 😊

thank you for sharing. painful moments in a strong and positive way, with a great sense of humor (as much as possible), but helping others know. unfortunately, deaf or hearing, hate (and trolls) come in all shapes and sizes and backgrounds. trolls are just trolls and will never be anything else. thanks for the warning about the school also, things others need to be aware of. :/

Oof, this really hit me close the home. This is literally very similar I experienced with ISD (Indiana) during my middle school years, and there's so many nasty rumors about me and even rumors about me when I just straight up left the school, never came back to it ever again. That's really sucks that I learned hard way and blamed myself a lot because I lost my friends and best friend due to some rumors... like really? I just don't really understand why this Elite groups really like to bully us that who we are so different to their "eyes". I'm so sorry that you both went through that painful experiences, I hope you both have experience some new wonderful things in future. Such brave souls. Unfortunately, this happens all too often. Gallaudet doesn't walk their talk of diversity: "everyone is welcome" - it simply isn't true. Thank you for telling your story. I pray you both find peace and healing.

I am sorry about gally. I am now aware about gally. I may not go to that school just because I don’t want to feel unwelcome.

This is heartbreaking and disgusting and I am happy that you have each other as friends. School is tough you didn’t deserve anything they did to you, thank you for being yourselves.

Gallaudet should have made it a point to be a safe place for all of its students, and you deserved so much more than what it gave you. I think it is definitely harder to be within a subgroup of people because then there is more of a spectrum of, for your instance, "how deaf" someone is. Regular universities allow for someone to go out and find a group of people who are more like them. Another example, one that I experienced, is within Christian universities. It is often about what church you go to or "how Christian" you are, and people are excluded in all different ways as well. It is almost more harmful, in my opinion, to put a subgroup of people together within one area because it does not really allow for growth in other ways. These subgroup colleges/universities kind of allow the entire facility to continue being more like high school - people bullying others, more judgement, less acceptance, etc. I think that schools based on subgroups of people can be more dangerous than if you were in a large mainstream university that had a smaller Deaf community - at least in that instance you would be able to relate to the struggles of being Deaf within a mainstream group.

As a Gallaudet alumni, it is my opinion that all colleges & universities do have these issues about bullying and elitism. College students will experience these things. The only difference between my time (1983 to 1991) and today's time, is that we did not have the words to identify these issues. "Bullying" and "elitism" and "anxiety" was unheard of during my time. But we all do experience the very same thing. I was bullied for being a "faggot". Now, I'm a proud as a Gay man. Today, it's all about accountability to make things right. Awareness is such a powerful tool because you have these words to define what it is. Thank you both for taking the time to do this video. I was so glued to this video. You both have beautiful souls. And, I'm quite impressed with the quality of the video camera.

Cheyenna and Kari - It can be a scary thing to share such personal experiences, especially in such a small community, but you two shared your truths in a way that was raw and honest and your thoughts and feelings are absolutely valid. I saw this type of elitism during my time at Gally and it's frustrating, but not surprising, that it continues. I hope your stories will continue to shed light on some of the very real issues are Gallaudet that aren't being addressed. Thank you for sharing some of your stories.

Im so sorry that people are behaving that way towards you. Im glad you have each other so that you are not alone. I hope those people grow up and realise what effect their behaviour is having and that it is not ok.

Sooooooo proud to watch this, when i watched Deaf U i fellllll inloveeeee with you! was always screaming at my screen when the elites would show up. I have always wanted to learn about the culture, and the language of sign language and honestly- they almost ruined it for me! Gally is a big school but the Deaf community is small or tight I guess and I don't know why but I never put together that a big school like Gally could also be so small (if that makes sense)

Hi guys. I went to Gally and experienced some of this bullying when I was there. I eventually made some friends so I was able to just focus on them and ignore everything else. I graduated from Gally so if I can get through it people can. I think your story is a great reminder that deafies can be mean to each other but if we get out of that and find our own group then that's good.. hoping you guys hang in there 👍🤟

Small groups are always the best groups! In small groups is where lifelong friendships are created...😊

I want to go to Gally but I just saw your experiences and hers too. :( Im scared to go but I want to. If they ask me like that then I won't tell them because my family isn't deaf or Im homeschool. I have to be strong and want to learn new things at there. (Hopefuly I would get accepted from there) I just don't like people who is mean, tells lie about people or others. It hurts me a lot. I never knew that experiences. I have heard stories about others bullying but never thought it’s because “you are not deaf enough” wow! I myself never attended Galludent myself but wanted to but never reached my dreams. I found out later that my deaf friends said I was lucky not to go. Wow! I’m very sorry you both had to experience this. My heart goes out to you both.
