Hello Friends,
Bowl cozies and bowl holders are cute and easy DIY gifts that have been featured on You Tube for the past few years. They allow you to comfortably hold a really hot bowl of soup or food once it has been heated in the microwave. I've been watching tutorials and got inspired to make some for gift giving! The first one I made came out great and included fusible batting, cotton fabric and cotton thread. Fusible batting provides a great structure to the bowl, but is not microwave safe.
Next, I decided to make a microwaveble version so that my friends could actually place their bowls of food or soup in the cozies and microwave them together without burning their hands.
I followed the tutorials, and used 100% cotton mercerized thread, batting and fabric, but it looks like my thread caught on fire! What a disaster.
I haven't made a video in a few weeks because life has gotten hectic, but I wanted my You Tube friends to be aware of this. Maybe I did something wrong. If so, let me know in the comments.
Check out my Etsy store wherr I feature beautiful handmade home decor inspired by the textiles of Africa.

You have to put food in it, or it WILL try to cook the cozy! Another Utuber talked about NOT putting it in the microwave to ‘test’ it, without something in it. Same with the potato bags. Also never use them if they are wet or if you’ve spilled food on them. Safest to partially microwave the food, stir it, put it in the bowl cozy and finish microwaving for a shorter time. Or don’t use it in the microwave, put it in the cozy after, if you are holding the bowl in your lap or taking it somewhere.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I’ve been singing this song at Accuquilt and Beyond for years, but didn’t want to guinea pig my house to prove it in a video. I hope this video saved thousands from going stupid stuff. Place the hot bowl of food in the cozy to keep it warm, but never cook your cozy in the MW 🥰

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but mercerised cotton is highly flammable, most likely due to the sodium hydroxide used to make it.

If there was a plastic smell, there was definitely a synthetic fiber present. It was probably the fabric that was a cotton/polyester blend but was mislabeled as 100% cotton. In the future. I recommend that you do a burn test with a small piece of the fabric before investing in the project. Burning a small swatch will tell you if it’s all cotton which would smell like burning paper or wood and leave a fine feathery ash. Additionally cotton fabric would have an afterglow which means that after you blow out the flame, the burnt edge will glow red and continue to burn the fabric. Much different than what you smelled when that cozy caught fire!

@@HomeCentsWithNell Thanks! I made some for my sister, and I used thread that came from our mom's stash, it's over 50 years old but perfectly good thread and it's 100% cotton. So glad I used that! She loves them, and now her best friend has paid me to make some for her. Yay! I ordered more cotton thread online. These are so fun to make, and quick! I made a template pattern out of cardboard with holes to mark the darts which helps. Another thing, I have a collection of quilt blocks that I find at thrift stores and yard sales, and they make beautiful bowl cozies! Makes it look like I put more work in them than I did, and it preserves the work someone else did, sometimes many years ago.

I've got a yard of cotton fabric from the 70s that has all the characters from "Welcome Back, Kotter" along with their sayings, like "Up your nose with a rubber hose", and "Sweathogs". Best 99 cents I've spent! I figure I can make a set of these and see if anyone on eBay buys them. Gotta be some Kotter fans out there.

You can't put it in the microwave empty. Microwaves work by exciting the water molecules in something, and the friction of those molecules bumping into each other cause heat. The same reason that you can't turn on a microwave empty... it must have something with some water content. Also, you said you "used fusible batting", which is a huge no no for these. You show Wrap N Zap, which is not fusible, but said fusible so if you used the W n Z then that is fine, but fusible is not ok for microwave.
@HomeCentsWithNell
@HomeCentsWithNell 4 года назад
Thanks for your comments. I had no idea that I needed to have a bowl with food in it in order for it to heat properly. I still have my burned bowl cozy so I might just go ahead and test it again. The first cozy (red and white stripes) was made with fusible batting, and I did not put that one in the microwave. I only tried heating heating the second one which contained Wrap N Zap.

Certain fibers have certain scents (learned in a college textile class many moons ago 😁. I think nylon, or maybe it was silk, smells like celery), so if the odor was really bad something may not have been cotton.. just FYI. Man made fibers are often oil (petroleum) based. So Tania you are probably correct. Hope this helps.

Nell, please listen to Claire Rowley on RU-vid. She lets you know what the science is behind COTTON and why it would catch fire. By the way, I have Potato Express from Walmart. I bought it 8 years ago and that bag is 100% polyester and even the batting is polyfill 100%. It has never caught fire. I've made baby clothes with yarns that are polyester rather than cotton. Back in the day, mother's use to smoke holding their babies and a hot ash was a concern as it should be. Poly will not flame......cotton will. Your cozy looks great by the way.

I suspect the thread is the issue ... mercerized cotton .... this is processed with caustic chemicals .... Mercerizing is a process of treating cotton thread (and fabric) in a caustic solution under tension, which causes the fibers to swell. This process allows dye to better penetrate the fibers, thereby increasing the luster while also strengthening the thread. DO NOT USE FOR MAKING MICROWAVE BOWLS !!!

I don't know, but several viewers said that the problem wasn't the thread, but me putting the cozy in the microwave completely empty. Apparently, moisture needs to be present to prevent the fire from happening. I haven't tried it, so I can't vouch for that explanation either way. We still use our bowl cozies daily, they're very handy . We just don't microwave them.

@@HomeCentsWithNell I know that years ago, when microwaves first came out, they told how to test if a container was microwave safe: Put the EMPTY container into the nuker ALONG WITH a glass measuring cup filled with 1 cup of water. Nuke for a cpl mins until the water boils. If the empty container is hot, it is not safe to use in the microwave, bc that means it is absorbing the rays. All the rays shd be going into the water, so if the other dish is hot, something inside it is absorbing the rays and it isn’t safe. So, that’s probably why nuking it with food in there is ok, bc the food absorbs the rays. I never knew that about mercerized cotton thread 🧵! 😬

I saw on another RU-vid video that from a science standpoint, the fabric itself would be impossible to catch on fire without something combustible on it. The video said that microwaves only "excite" molecules of water, sugar, and/or fat and those molecules are what have the potential to catch on fire. Was it possible that water got on it before you put it in the microwave (for example, the bowl could have been freshly washed but not dried) or maybe some of the contents of the bowl boiled out while cooking? I've been using mine for several weeks now with no problems. But I am curious about this. Have you had any other incidents like this?

I would bet there was scrim on your batting. I would never trust Dollar Tree fabric at all. I would also do the flame test on any fabric I was not sure was 100% cotton. Also be careful that your thread is 100% cotton and does not have a polyester core. Mercerized has no impact on your problem. This process allows dye to better penetrate the fibers, thereby increasing the luster while also strengthening the thread."

I have read the same thing and I really can't explain the discrepancy. For a while, I only used non mercerized cotton thread but I can no longer find it, so now I test each batch of thread, batting and fabric in the microwave along with a cup of water before I start sewing the cozies together. I haven't had any more problems since I made this video. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

are u sure u didnt get food or water on it before placing it in the microwave? that would cause it to catch fire because the food or water caught fire and the material was in the way. ;) How long did u have it in the microwave?

The first problem is using Dollar tree items..Not EVER Recommended !..Also, never put items like these , empty, ion a microwave. How high and how long did you put it in the microwave?... These are for short term heating only, not cooking...Invest in quality items , fabric, thread and genuine batting that is 100% cotton and you won't have these problems. Get your items from Joann's Hobby Lobby, a quilt shop, etc. and they will last for years. Mine have and the many i have given as gifts.

Hello. All of my items were from Hobby Lobby or Wal-Mart except for the fabric itsself. That came from Dollar Tree, and was labeled 100% cotton. I believe the thread is what caught on fire, not the fabric. I did a trial of two minutes in the microwave because that's how long I normally reheat a bowl of soup since my microwave is not very powerful. Someone else commented that I shouldn't have heated the bowl cozy by itself, due to a lack of moisture in the microwave. I hadn't thought of that! Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

@@HomeCentsWithNell never put an empty bowl/dish in the microwave. No wonder it caught on fire. Always, add water and a bowl to test these cozy/pot holder sewn items, before microwaving. Please take note that on the batting bag it says that it should not be microwaved for longer than three minutes at a time. My girlfriend started a fire in her microwave using the bowl cozy I made. She left it in the microwave and turned the microwave on to use as a timer with no food in it for 22 minutes. I use mine in the microwave all the time. But I do not store them in the microwave. I think your video is going to put people off making these which is a shame, as you put it in the microwave on its own without any food in and the first rule of microwaving is there must be some food/moisture. It's not a heat pad that heats up, it's a cozy to protect your hands from the warm bowl. Sorry about your fire though, and I'm glad it wasn't worse.

Hopefully they'll watch the entire video and read the comments to get a full understanding. Bowl cozies are great and I've made several since posting this video. We don't microwave ours but that's a personal choice. I've read mixed opinions on whether mercerized cotton thread may be the culprit but the consensus seems to be not to microwave items that don't contain liquid. Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment.
