Gunny had a seizure today. He is ok. He does this 4 or 5 times a year. I have taken him to the vet many times, and they ran many tests on him. Here is a video of him having a seizure. Comment below if you experience the same thing with your pets, or if you know what is going on.

This looks like a focal seizure. My last dog started having them when he was 8, and it can be very hard to describe to a vet, so this video should be very helpful for people who are going through this for the first time. My dog had focal seizures randomly, but he had a couple of grand mals that were both triggered by exercise. It's possible that your dog's seizures are triggered by stress or overexcitement. You're very lucky that they happen so infrequently. My dog was having multiple seizures a month and ended up on phenobarbital for the rest of his life. I will say for everyone that's going through this for the first time that he lived to be 16, which is extremely old for his breed.

Thank you for documenting your dog’s seizure. Our 13 yr old retriever just had one (the first as far as we know) early this morning and it really scared us. Appreciate your description of what happened. We knew enough to not interrupt him while having it. Happy your boy and ours are ok now.

Thank you for this. Our 14 yo Dachshund started having them after back surgery, they are different for him but we did take him in to a pet hospital. They could not see anything wrong and they tested for Valley fever which is common here in AZ. They said that sometimes as dogs get older this can develop. I was told to document them when they occurred: the symptoms, duration, etc. If he has three within 24 hours they will start him on anti-convulsant medication. But as long as it's short and apart from each other then just watch and document. Don't pick him up, just comfort him. It scared the hell out of us the first time.

My mini doxie had a sezure mid october of this year. It was the first one. like you, it scared the hell out of me. after he came out of it (1am), he trotted around our back yard for 3 hours before coming back into the house. I've been looking for answers ever since and watching tons of videos. He just had a second seizure a couple of days ago. Seems like he lost a lot of his sight and has slowed down tremendously. I've called the vet but I'm starting to worry its something more serious. How is your doxie doing? and how often is he experiencing seisures? and do you have any suggestions or "tricks" that you've used to try to get a jump on them? thank you for any info or advice.

First I want to say I’m so sorry you lost Gunny , I’m glad you had him so long ! Secondly I’m here bc my silver Labrador Sherlock , had seizures beginning in Feb he’s had 4 total . His last less than 2 min but he does lose consciousness and poops (usually ) and has no memory of any of it & the confusion is hard to watch too. He’s almost 8 weighs 117 lbs and I live alone cannot lift him . He was on phenobarbital & I’d honestly rather put him down that ever go back to that nightmare drug . ( my vet did follow up blood levels to find it was too high & damaging his liver ) we went back to Keppra and started a vet prescribed food “ Purina pro plan Neurocare “ I’m not sure it helps but he likes the food . I wanted to say I decided to all post my dogs seizure so people can see what they’re like , bc of Gunny’s video! My dogs is completely different - seizures are so hard to watch.

My 13 year old Doberman just started having them. Her recent vet appointment said she was doing really well. Her back legs are weak and shake so I just thought it was her front legs getting weak as well. She staggers and struggles to stand and walk and then after only about a minute seems fine but is panting. Fortunately I work from home so she won't need to struggle alone. Thanks you for sharing.

My black golden retriever gets about 3 a year. He goes down and crawls around, eyes roll in the back of his head. You can tell he's scared and also scares me. I feel helpless. But have learned what to do. Baby talk, keep your dog close. It will end in about 7 minutes or less. After, give water, baby asprin, a spoon full of maple syrup followed buy a small amount of protein or yogurt. He may not remember what happened but you do and always will cuz for a minute there, the first time it happened, i thought he was poisoned from drinking outta a puddle or something. So baby talk, call his name softly, tell him he will b ok. It will.

My miniature poodle does this too. It is down right heart wrenching watching them. Their eyes get all glassy, they look helpless, their muscles seize up, and mine shakes uncontrollable. We make sure is is no where where he can get hurt. We comfort him, pet him, soothe him, and we also take a pea sized amount of honey and rub it on his gum. A little jolt of sweetness seems to help ( or it could all be in my head).

Thank you for posting this, I know it seems cruel but I needed to see a video of a dog having to seizure so that I could see it's what my dog had for the first time ever yesterday. Vets said no two seizures are alike, they don't always follow same patterns or symptoms so I thought he wasn't having one because he didn't look rigid and straightened out or foaming a lot or biting down. He just looked wobbly, shaky, and his eyes were darting back and forth - almost the same as your dog looked. Thank you for sharing this so I know what to look for in my dog 😢 I'm sad and sorry to see anyone's pet go through this.

I am studying to become a Veterinary and now I am researching seizures, which resulted in me watching this video. I know this comment is a couple years late and the problem has probably already been resolved but I just wanted to put this out there to inform others. I am not certain of Gunny's breed, but some breeds can be prone to having seizures (ex. Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever etc.). There are different types of seizures a dog might have such as: Focal (partial) seizures - affects only one part of the brain but can sometimes spread to other parts on the brain. This seizure could happen due to an underlying disease or injury caused to the dog. (^Gunny seemed to be having a focal seizure since it was just his hind legs) Generalized (grand mal) seizures - The most common seizure; happens throughout the brain and the entire body. Can cause the dog to lose consciousness or convulse - it can last from a few seconds up to a few minutes. Cluster seizures - when a dog has two or more seizures within 24 hours. This seizure could occur in dogs who suffer with idiopathic epilepsy The best thing to do when your dog is having a seizure is to move anything harmful out of the way, talk to them softly and comfortingly, avoid touching your dog encase they may accidentally bite, take note of the time (this information is for your vet) and call your vet (call them during or after). Try to answer your vets' questions to the best or your ability so they know what's wrong and how to treat your dog. Seizures could be caused by diseases, disorders, parasites, liver disease, kidney failure, brain tumors, brain trauma, or toxins. (But Idiopathic epilepsy is the most common cause of seizures in dogs.)

Our basset hound Shamus had one last night that lasted over 4 minutes . I after freaking out grabbed my cell and recorded it just so we could show a vet . The head swinging back and forth like a pendulum and legs not working was frightening. His brother rooster started having anxiety because shamus is the alpha out of the two and rooster couldn’t figure out what was wrong with his brother . I sent video over to my son in law that’s a medic and he said ya that’s a seizure . He did tell me “ if he has another one don’t keep calling his name like you did in the video, it’ll likely create more stress for him, just sit next to him .” I’d never experienced this before so didn’t know what to do for him. Thats a wonderful video you made for us. My Honey (dog) much the same size as your Gunny, has started having seizures in the last couple of months. They are very gentle, but much the same as Gunny’s. Honey has had a seizure about 2 to 5 times a week She is starting to have them mostly at night. I’m wondering if the TV triggers her,. The lights on the TV at night when it’s dark. I suffer with Night Terrors, and have severe PTSD, and leave the TV on all night, to keep me a feeling of being safe and connected (I think), I just know it works. So I may need to stop doing that, and see if the TV is the trigger. If it is, then Honey wins, and I’ll just have to think of another way to get through the night. If she has a seizure, and the TV is NOT on, then I’ll win. But either way, Honey’s seizures, make me very sad, she’s such a darling. I hope they always remain Petit Mal, and not too serious. I have posted a video of Honey having her latest seizure. It’s a bit long, but it takes her whole experience. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jZ4Jpah-Cqs.html

Thanks for the post. Your dog looks exactly like mine with the symptoms. Mine would do this once every few months but lately it’s been every few days. Just been researching this a lot and your video helps. Thanks again.

I have seizures, but what is strange is we rescued a dog, who is so afraid of people, it took a very long time for her to let us even touch her. However the first time I had a seizure, she ran over to me and stayed glued to my side until it was over. She does this each time I have a seizure. I love her very much.

Thank you for posting. My lab has the exact same thing every few months and it’s so scary. I thought he was having hip issues since his hind legs would not work. It was hard to explain to my vet what was happening. I was never sure what to do when this was happening but now I’ll just keep calm with him until it is over.

My pup Charley (Boston Terrier)just started having seizures exactly like this. I didn’t know it was a seizure until I videoed it and shared it with the vet. A lot of people associate shaking violently with seizures however, they can present them self just like this and it’s muscle spasms and disorientation. Thanks for sharing your video.

Thank you for sharing this. My 10-year-old Border collie mix just had one like this and it freaked her out. She was desperately trying to stand, but her legs kept giving out, she was shaking, her pupils were dilated and she was panting and drooling a bit. She has never had one and it totally freaked me out. It only lasted about a minute, although it felt like forever, and then she was pretty much back to normal. I just got home from taking my other dog to the vet and it being just before the holidays the last thing I need is the stress of worrying about a sick dog and possibly another vet bill. Ugh. But this video helped put my mind at ease a bit. I am wondering if separation anxiety of me being away at the vets could have triggered this? I’m going to keep a close eye on her and see how she does.

Hi Dustin, I have a Kelpie that has had these seizures. After much research, I have changed his diet to gluten free food only. He gets a beef, rice and vitamin canned food. Avoid anything with corn, wheat or other grains. He has not had any problems for over a year now. Look up info on canine epileptoid cramping syndrome. Most articles say it is a hereditary disease of Border Terriers but there are many videos of various breeds with this issue. Good luck with Gunny, he is such a nice dog.

My poor baby gets seizures a few times out of the year. He starts to shake and gets very disoriented. What I noticed calms him back down is comforting him. I pet him and tell him that he will be okay. The only problem with his seizures is he tries getting up to walk and just tips over. We have steps outside and he has fallen off them.

I have a Bassett/beagle mix and he gets them a few times a year. When he does have one I lay down with him, gently pet his head and softly sing him a lullaby. It calms him right down.

My dog just had something similar happen. That is how I came across your video. I thought I had seen something strange like this a few months back but it was so short lived that I thought maybe I was just overthinking it? But today it lasted a little longer and it's scary. Making appointment for vet asap. Hope your Gunny is doing well still.

Thank you for this my Boston Terrier is doing the same thing. It seems to happen after I let her outside. And it just started. She tenses up can't breath and eyes dilate. She comes out if it panting and lays on floor to calm down. This has been everyday in the last 3 days. Not sure if she has done this while I was at work so it could have been happening longer then I realized but after she is normal all day! My heart breaks 💔

My service dog just started having seizures at the end of October. His are very similar to what Gunny goes through. He doesn't pant, but it's like he is afraid for a few minutes and then he's fine. Watching this video was very helpful. I was still in bed when it happened today, so I couldn't record it for our vet. This was very helpful. How is Gunny now? This video is almost 3 years old, so I would like to know if he is still doing ok.

Thank you for sharing your experience. My dog is a mixed Poodle-Cocker Spaniel and he started to get those “episodes” in the past year. He’ll be 3 yo this month. They look a lot like Gunny’s seizure on the video.

Teddy started to Yelp a lot or crying . He had on seizure be for many months ago. The Vet gave us Valium 1 ml up his rectum. It stopped the seizure. He seems to panic which is hard to watch. Keeping him out of direct sunlight is a good thing as sometimes they can’t close their eyes. Thanks

My dog has seizures usually about 2 a year, she went through a whole year without one. I have same conclusion, that something triggers it maybe noise or some sort of stress. I find that wetting a large DARK towel and placing it over her, covering her eyes but not her nose and mouth. I then switch off all sounds and any lights, which help soothe her. This helps control them and makes her snap out of them slightly quicker. Hope this helps someone else.

Thank you. My dog just had one. He never had before. It only lasted about 30-45 seconds. Shaking, leaning to one side and couldn't stand. When it was done, he was his playful self. My vet said it is not worrisome unless it lasts more than 5 minutes or they don't return to normal quickly. Still, it's scary to see.

Last night my dog did this for the first time (to my knowledge) my dogs eyes dilated all the way for about 5 minutes though. She could stand but when she tried to walk her legs seemed to flare out from under her and she would walk side ways. She was totally freaked out. When she seemed to be coming out of it she started panting heavily and drooling.

Omg 😱 thank you for this video! My Daryl literally just had one . This was the first time I’ve witnessed it. He looked scared and was biting the sheet (he was laying on bed with me )- I work nights and he insists on sleeping with me . He looks like your dogs Twin . He couldn’t walk but after 5 minutes or so he could. I’m going to research more and see a vet but thank you 🙏🏼
