➳How much exercise does an #AustralianShepherd need seems to be the question of all questions. So I am here to talk about that and compare the two days to each other. Day 1 we have 0 hours of exercise. Just some tricks for treats and nothing else on this rainy day. Day 2 we have 3 hours of exercise and you can see the difference for yourself.

So I am curious, what is your exercise routine with your pup? How many hours? What do you do?

I have a 6 month old female Aussie named Kassie. Early in the morning she comes with me in my truck. I walk her 2 or 3 times before we get home around 11. Another walk in the afternoon with some ball throwing. (Raw! 😊) dinner around 6:15. Then back to the ballpark around 8pm for more ball throwing and Frisbee, and if her friend Waldo is there, then it is puppy wrassling for 20 minutes. Bedtime around 9:30.

My 11 month old Wiggle butt, has a chuck it and we play ball at the dog park an hour in the morning and in the afternoon. Ball any time anywhere this is my life now. Curious what you use for the shedding, I tried the FURminator he hated it. I just use a undercoat rake, he’s still young so the shedding has just begun.

My Aussie shepherd ( 7 years old) has 1-2 hours of exercise most days. We also skip a day in extreme weather. He’s very adaptable. We either walk through the woods and countryside or we join a group at the park and he does ball retrieval .. it’s his favourite thing and he can keep going a very very long time.

I have a 4 year old mini Aussie. Her energy level varies. She can be very content laying with me on the sofa getting lots of love or next to my desk while I am working. She is an active chewer though and will keep herself busy without me. Has not destroyed anything not a toy in a long time which I am grateful for. She loves to go for walks when it is cooler. Unfortunately, We live in the south and like right now it is 96*F with a feel like of 108...too hot to be walking for me even must less her... In the cooler months,she can go and go. She will crash though. I would say on average an hour is good for her with a caveat of mental stimulation on top of that.

Start every day with an early 40 minute brisk walk, 2.5 miles. It's pretty hot right now but my husband or I usually take the mini Aussie out for 15 minutes at a time to play Frisbee or chase squirrels 3 or 4 times a day. She also plays ball while she eats and plays with her many other toys until they're all over the house. I'd say an even, solid 2.5 hours of exercise is what Leda gets now at 3 years, 5 months old.

Sagan (red merle Aussie, standard size) was 14 so we ran around and played inside the house, chase the humans ! And he came alive every night around 8, mugging for pets, bringing toys, etc.... Little Doppler (another red merle, standard) was a puppy so everyone pitched in and walked him, and played with him....now, the latest pup is a 7 month old rescue corgi husky mix named Lottie....we run her in the backyard (tennis ball), and have her chase me, a few times a day....and briskly walk 2 miles everynight...she'll bark around 8 if we have not gone for our walk...we are still trying to learn how to walk together, I would like to go running, but not with a circling, herding dog.... I'd love to have a recall like Frankie does....love it how he perks up when he hears FRISBEE.... I got, one and she loves it, but we need to do it outside...

My exercise routine for him is... interesting. I'm disabled so I can't walk and run him like I'd like to, (and he'd like to) but my family tries to get him out for walkies. Once he's more trained and behaves a little better, he'll be going everywhere with me. It's been way too hot recently (Virginia in August) for much outside stuff, but he lOVES tennis balls and chasing them and catching them with his super nerf shooter. When the lake opens up again, he absolutely loves to swim and chase bubbles in the water. Also kayaking! I looks like George Washington crossing the Delaware. I can't wait for the summer to ease up (because it's harder on me. I can exercise better in cooler weather myself). But my (standard/full size) boi is only turning 9 mo this month and it's all a working progress.

My mini Aussie is still a puppy (almost 3 months!), so I'm still waiting to see how his exercise routine takes shape eventually. But right now, he does really well with three or four play sessions in our backyard a day (anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes each). And it can depend on the day - sometimes that's enough and he's tuckered out, and sometimes he wants to keep playing even more than that. Can't wait to start taking him to parks and trails!

8 month mini/large toy aussie, she's not a high energy dog but she's always thinking and needs sufficient physical exercise to calm her down plus a lot of social and mental stimulation. We do about 1-2 hours of exercise, exploration, and errands in the morning (she's up at 6:30am), training and play time throughout the day, a short midday or early afternoon walk if it's not sweltering hot here in California, and then a longer evening walk and play time before calling it at night between 10-11pm. All in, she gets a 2-3 hours of exercise, training, play, and intentional socialization on a daily basis. Weekends usually involve long multi-hour hikes, road trips, new environments and playdates. Fortunately, she has an off switch and will keep herself occupied during the day if she doesn't have a lot going on.

i have a malinois (high energy as well XD) and it's about 2h to 2.5h of exercice every day ( he's still a puppy so i try to not do too much) i try to impose a 'break' day if we did a lot of exercice the day before and that seems to work well. i find people don't train there dogs to have an off day and that's what lead to problems. a few weeks ago i go sick and we had 3 off days in a row he went through lots of chews but he let me rest and for a 5 month old puppy that's pretty great!

I take my 7-month-old Aussie to the dog park every morning and evening where he runs and plays with his buddies for 30-60 minutes. On weekends we might go on a hike or an expedition. we're also doing obedience class and this 1 hour/week deflates him completely. Lol! I noticed he's needing more exercise. We'll see if things change once he gets snipped in 2 weeks. Love your videos.

I have a show aussie from iceland- so I just really might have a different temperament with my dog- but I focus on developing an "off" switch in all of my dogs. I think it's important esp in front of kids, other dogs, and people that are just scared of dogs. But normally he gets about 30 minutes of physical exercise and a lot of mental stimulation. puzzle bowls, task training, frozen kongs, ect. It bothers me when people gatekeep this dog by saying "Oh they are off the wall." They aren't. They are an active dog, for a responsible owner.

@lauf4888 2 года назад
My Aussie is also from a show line, we were told they tend to have less energy, which I've found to be not true haha. He also gets about 30 mins to 1 hour every morning and then kongs, puzzles and other stuff throughout the day. Any tips for developing an off switch properly?
@duncanandmac
@duncanandmac 2 года назад
@@lauf4888 I practice by going to restaurants and just sitting. lol. "Sit on the dog" helps me a lot. you just sit on the leash. But basic obedience has also helped due to impulse control.

My 2 year old Aussie has a regular routine that he sticks to. When I am at work my husband walks with him at least 3 times (9:30am, 1pm, and 4:30pm), then we both take him out after dinner. On weekends or when I am on holiday the afternoon walk has to be done by me.... and then usually it is a long long walk 1-2 hours. He sometimes lets us skip the 4:30 walk but never the evening walk. (We also own a bar so there is a late late walk at 1am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights). He seems to intuitively know what day it is and what the routine will be - he gets very vocal if we change it.

@@FrankieToTheMoon Doesn't matter to me! Frankie keeps me going. I grew up with an aussie. I got into a bad car accident when I was 18(31 now) and gained over 200lbs. Broke my back and had to relearn how to walk, leaving my dad to take over exersizing my Panda. She passed away at 16 years old. To this day I resent the injury, because it prevented me from going on adventures with my aussie and doing right by her at the end of her life activity wise. I am scheduled for bariatric surgery at the end of september and when I reach my weightloss goal, I want to adopt an aussie puppy. The breed is near and dear to my heart. I must do right by my body and be sure I am in the right standing before taking on such an amazing breed again. Frankie reminds me everyday that this mission to better health is worth it in the end to have a bond an aussie offers. Hold him extra tight for me today and give extra kisses. Thank you.

I live in South Florida so the summers are bad. I walk my 2 1/2 year old Aussie at 6am. During summer, only 1 mile, cooler weather 2 miles. Playing fetch and a sort of hide n seek in the yard in short time spurts during summer. Longer in cooler weather. I have to get more training time in. He's protective of me & the house. And at times, it was justified. I need to work on that. He's a bit rebellious at times.

My Aussie has a sweet spot of 1 hour hard out door exercise when it’s under 100 out (Phoenix, AZ) and then we do play quite a bit inside in addition to that. When it’s cooler out or we are traveling with him to cooler places 3 good hours of out door exercise seems perfect.

I have an 11 month old Shepherd/collie type and he usually gets at least 2 hours a day plus training. Our morning is usually 45 minutes or so, I try to do an hour at least, of playing and running. During the day, I try to give him a couple of short sessions. Then after work another hour at least of harder playtime, and in the evening typically a longer training session! Though it totally does vary, if we have been on a roll and doing lots of activities every day, it's typically easy for him to "take a day off".

My Aussie mix loves a run, but also equally loves a lazy lounge around (she's on my bed snoring away as I write this). I make sure to take her once a week to go see her doggie best friend. Not sure if it's available in Canada, but the Furminator shampoo and conditioner is AMAZING for reducing the shedding. The conditioner also helps with the itch and helps release the undercoat. It smells so good and it's made of natural ingredients.

Now obviously, she isn't biting with her full potential, but it still can hurt sometimes, and I want to stop this before she gets a lot older. She is only 3 months as of now. Any advice on how to go on about this? I have tried ignoring her and not playing with her for a bit. I have tried yelping or I guess expressing my pain, but it doesn't stop her.

Right before I got my Aussie I looked it up how often to bathe them and it said once every 3 or 4 months for their skin. My 4 month old Aussie gets a walk at 5am, then about an hour and a half at the park at 5pm with plenty of running, tug of war, and frisbee. he also gets like 2 to 3 play sessions in between.

I cringe every time I see you walk down the hardwood stairs in your socks. I fell down an entire flight of stairs when I slipped in socks on the hardwood at the top. Luckily I was ok, but never did those stairs again in just socks.
