Sound reasoning Mark on "Keeping it simple" (and light). Good choice.

You can use a 90 degree oil filter mount from B & C instead of using a remote mount. Much easier

Mark, I stumbled across your videos when looking into paint / priming stuff for the RV-14 I'm building.. Who knew you were just an hour away from me in Linden!! (I thought the airfield looked familiar) I will have to stop by some time and check out the build.

If the engine only has the oil pressure port facing sideways, install the 45° restrictor fitting before mounting the engine. Some have 2 ports, one facing rearward, which you can access after the engine is mounted. Hope this tip saves you some time.😊 Also there are several angled oil filter adapters that may fit, this would eliminate 2 extra oil lines, but it may not fit your cowling. Cheers, B.

Fuel injection can be a little more finicky to hot start,, sometimes.. like you said, you just have to find the procedure that the particular engine likes. The Carb will be easier to start hot, cold or hand prop. As for the mags, those slick mags will be easier to hand prop if you ever needed to. Although P-Mags could allow for hand propping also. Electronic ignition will save you about a gallon per hour in cruise. That’s reason enough for me to use them. Plus they have a built in generator, a total electrical failure won’t take them out like other electronic ignitions.

I’ve read a lot of good things about the P-Mags. Someday I may upgrade and use them.

Congrats on receiving the engine. I will be interested in your video concerning engine selection. I am diving into a build soon and am certainly thinking fuel injected. I was happy to hear about your selection process. Lots to think through.

First, I love your content! About the oil filter, I have the same issues in my airplane, have you considered a 90 degree adapter? Hot start the fuel injected Pitts, try: pull the elevator and hold it, full throttle, mixture a bit open, starter, when the engine started, move the throttle quickly to idle, mixture to reach. You have to be very careful and ready to pull the throttle back as the engine will start and go high power, especially on tail wheel airplanes.

how much does it cost to get a aircraft engine? can you fly inverted with the engine you bought or does that require something else?

Please tell us about the engine! Why did you pick it? Why not a Titan O-340 or the stroked O-360 (an O-375 I think utilized by Zenith)? Why carburettors instead of fuel injection? Please, please, please. Why that engine.

I am very glad that you got that engine. I have exactly the same engine from the same place. (when I bought my kit, I bought everything for the build at the same time). Now I can watch some one else install the engine and try not to make the same mistakes. (I'm sure I'll make others) I have my tail and wings done. I'm well into the fuselage.

Engine looks great and I'm sure it will serve you well. Carburetor and magnetos may not be new tech, but they sure are tried and true. Moving the battery back sounds like a good idea if you need weight aft anyway. You may need to increase the wire gauge of the battery cables to compensate for the longer run. Somewhere I've seen slim (long and skinny) AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries that are spill-proof and can be mounted in any position, like laying down flat. They're pricey but open up many possibilities for mounting in narrow/thin places.
@boonhargrove1399
@boonhargrove1399 Год назад
According to the label, the battery is a PC625. The Oddesey pc625 is an AGM battery. This is my preferred battery. They do not like the heat when installed in the engine compartment. Better to install them behind the firewall or farther rearward. Using the battery to adjust weight and balance is a good idea.

Horse and cart may not be new technology but they are tried and true . . .
@Know-Way
@Know-Way Год назад
@@TRPGpilot Yup, and miles out into the wilderness where there's no electricity or gas, I'd rather have a horse and cart. We had a late 1940's to early 1950's International Cub tractor on the farm that had carburetor and magneto. With the crank handle put in the front of the motor you could start it up with no battery. We ran it for years with no battery installed at all. Don't get me wrong, I like fuel injection and electronic ignition. It has many advantages, but carburetor and magnetos is still a good choice in the wilderness, which is where Mark says he plans to go.

No the UL Power starts right up. But the fuel system is different. It does not have the spider and fuel lines on top of the cylinders.

Regulatory capture and insane regulations have created near monopolies. All new entries force insane pricing. Without the FAA forcing insanity on everyone, you should be able to get a new engine for roughly $8k-$10k. Any difference is directly enforced by the FAA's uselessness. Never forget, the FAA's official regulatory position is that all pilots and mechanics want to kill themselves and this doesn't happen only because of the blessings of the FAA.

Latest and greatest ? You mean technology stack that has been mass produced and installed on tens of millions of engines since around mid 80s … I guess if you compare that to what is basically a 1930s engine , it does qualify as latest and greatest …. speaking of Trent Palmer , ironically, he does fly a modern , turbo and fuel injected engine😊

Good points. The funny thing about the Rotax is even though they keep improving the fuel and ignition components etc even that basic engine design dates back to the 80s. Time flies ...

Magnetos are a lot less reliable than electronic ignition. Not even a valid comparison. Bendix mechanical fuel injection is worse than having a carb. A modern fuel injection system from SDS is simple as hell, simpler than a carb even and just as reliable. Fuel pumps submersed in a header tank is the way to go.
