people get so mad when other people who aren’t stylists do their own hair and i will never understand. it’s so much fun cutting my bangs at 3 am and dying it neon peach. does it look good? no. did i satisfy my need to become an entirely new person? yes.

I've started shaving half my hair and dying the still longish part ginger and the shaved part leopard print and then cutting and styling it myself and I'm absolutely loving it. I am crediting Micarah for giving me the confidence to do that.

Yea and also if you do it enough you get good at it, then you can cut other people (friends family ext) with out making a huge mess of their hair as you have learned on your self. As I’ve now started cutting all my families hair, and it started with me shaving off half my hair and then I learned and experimented on my head knowing I could just shave it all of it I terribly messed up.

I think what matters is that you're happy with it and safe. I'm no stylist at all, btw. My only concern is that people have proper ventilation and safety procedures (burning your skin/scalp is no fun and fumes are ew). If you like it, and had fun, it shouldn't concern anyone else.

Jessica, I've been cutting my own hair for many years and by now, I'm amused by others' reactions when they find out. I usually have a drink when I do it to make it REALLY FUN! I have to add that I'm a black woman with short hair, but still . . .

As someone with very fine naturally blonde(ish) who has used henna exclusively for 12 years (& didn't quite get the hang of it until a good 3-4 years in), I think I might know why you have such a hard time getting your roots to take. Henna needs heat to really cure & bring out those vibrant colors, so: - Use boiling water to mix the henna so it stays hot longer - Use a thick ceramic bowl for mixing, like the kind you might use for baking (again, something that's gonna retain heat longer) & cover it with a towel while it cures to trap heat in - Let it cure in the bowl for no less than 2 hrs (but no more than 4) before you put it on I know it sounds like a lot of hassle but it 100% is not once you're in the habit. My hair is so uniformly red now that I've even fooled anesthesiologists who nervously asked me if I ever had issues coming out of general anesthesia because "that is often an issue for redheads". Give it a shot!
@elletco
@elletco 3 года назад
Henna is so interesting because everyone seems to have differing experiences. I’ve used henna since 2009 as well and I always mix my henna (Jamila, body art quality) the night before I’m dyeing my hair so it sits for like nine hours before I use it and the colour deposit is perfect, I have never used heat in any form. I’ve always heard that you shouldn’t put boiling water on it because it can ruin the pigment. I always just use a little lemon because it’s said to help with the dye release.

also longtime henna user here - yesss on the hot liquid (i make black tea with cloves) it makes the henna bond even to my dark brown roots! after mixing the powder in i put the hot henna (not hot enough to burn myself of course..) on my head, wrap everything in cling film, but a beanie over everything and go to bed (put a towel on the pillow :D). this way i have the henna on for at least 8 hours and i don't have to walk around with the heavy stuff on my head. It's a gamechanger! also not dyeing all the hair everytime if possible saves a lot of time :3 (haven't had any issues with a patchy result or anything..)
@kcschomas
@kcschomas 3 года назад
@@eldritchelsbells So since you mentioned dark brown roots - I have roots that are quite dark as well, compared to my light copper hair (I usually go to the salon because I'm afraid to attempt the root lightening process myself). Would henna be a good method for me? Trying to figure out a way to keep my hair a uniform red at home, hopefully without having to do multiple processes to get those roots to match the rest of my hair.
@eldritchelsbells
@eldritchelsbells 3 года назад
@@kcschomas if the rest of your hair is a light copper color (bleached) i'm not sure how uniform the results would get with henna, since it can't really lighten your natural hair, it just covers or merges with your own tones. i never bleached my hair so i get a nice dark red that gets lighter on my ends (due to sunlight and general damage i guess^^). if you're looking for a really nice and orange-y copper with henna you need light hair to begin with (like rachel who is a blonde naturally). with dark hair you usually get more of a burgundy result that only looks orange/copper when direct sunlight hits it in my experience, not sure if that's something you would enjoy if you're used to the results of chemical hair dye...

Heya!! at the risk of adding to the ton of advice you may already have had to plow through, I’ll just say this. Henna meant for body art is treated in a way to enhance the dark (near black) colour that’s preferred in henna tattoos. For hair, please opt for an organic henna hair mask-it should be ground henna leaves, free from chemicals. It’ll still give you the same rich red, coz that’s the colour of natural henna. And...a metal pan (cast iron) is actually advisable-it makes the colour richer! And, with that, I’ll rest my case. Absolutely love your channel. 💕💕 -from India 🇮🇳

Okay, but if you want any actual tips on that from another naturally curly person, make sure your hair has been moisterized before you brush it out, it helps a whole bunch to avoid the frizz. Creams are a pretty standard way to go to moisturize hair, though some extra research will be required if you want a cream that will also keep your hair healthy, which also goes a long way. Manes by Mell is a really good channel to do some research on curly hair ness if you want to take that time. Anyway, hope you have a good day!

As someone who does henna for like...20 years probably I can give small tips : - remove your bathroom rug and put a very old and ugly towel instead. And I remove any towel or washcloth of the area to avoid being tempted to grab it, just in case 😂😂 - do your hair dye wearing only panties, black being the better choice, so when you're done, you can get into the shower to rinse the henna that fell into your skin and avoid to have orange spots that will stay for days in the worst case scenario. Prepare black clothes for after the shower. For the upper body, best would be a tank top stretchable enough to be put on by the legs to avoid any risk of putting henna on it, because dry henna crumbs get everywhere.... - like said in the video, the longer the henna stays on your head, the better it dyes your hair and stays afterwards. I leave it on for at least 2 hours. - rinse your hair in a bucket. Henna is very difficult to rinse and it uses a lot of water. I found that using a bucket is way less messier, more efficient and eco-friendly. The biggest issues would be if you're scared of putting your head in the water and you'll probably have a bit of henna in your ears...but it doesn't stay. I fill up and empty my bucket twice and then finish with the shower head. - Everyone does whatever they want, but I always bought henna or natural hair dye that recommend avoiding shampoo at all cost for 18 to 24h, so the color stays better on your hair. I found it to be true but maybe I'm influenced. To get rid of any henna crumbs, put some conditonner or hair mask and leave it on your hair for 5 mn at least. And I'll end up saying it's not a real tips but I'm very lazy when it comes to take care of my hair so I never miss the occasion to put any oil or essential oil or any product that is good for the hair because it will stay on for at least 2 hours :) Anyways, loved the video and (and the fabulous hair color 😍😍😍) the content of the channel all together, very nice feeling of vintage and a lot of fun that I love 😍😍😍😍. And please excuse my english it's not my native language.

As a hairstylist who is a natural light blonde, and had my hair colored red for 5 years, I thoroughly support your Henna journey ;) remember what you put in when you mix will affect the final color... I always wanted my more red than orange, I mixed in red wine, warm water and even some redirect dye... I never had issues with it clinging to the roots ( I have other colors that won’t stick like Elumen). Those overtone color conditioners ( or other color conditioners) work like a charm when the glow goes of the hair, and prolonge the color... maybe you could even get away with only coloring you roots and using overtone on your lenghts... I have a tip for your rollers... if you hate those plastic clips ( in my hair they always left with marks from the plastic) just cut them outs use a bit of cabbage and stick it through the hole - so next time you just tie the fabric and bye bye to those pesky marks on the roots ;) And I always support my clients cutting their own bangsand try to teach them doing it on their own....... and I only have one tip.... if you switch up where you cut, and start with a little at a time, it should work better.... I love that you cut them with thinning shears, it gives a softer tip... but other than that... cut on the underside of the fingers, that gives you more control over where you cut and how short it gets! If you want more tips, I can give you one more.... start with a small section about an inch wide, right where your part line is, or if you switch it up, tight in the middle.... let that section fall down and find out where you want the shortest length to fall, and cut either with your thinning shears, or point cut vertical with the tip of a normal pair of shears.... that gives you a guide to work from.... now you take a section of your sidebangs and do the same thing... if you do one side at a time you can take the cut side and the uncut side, pull it out right in front of you face, meeting in the middle, and that gives you a guide for the other sidebang.... finally you just connect the to guides through the rest of your bang, one side at a time.. A pro tip - always cut less off than you think in the first go.... as you discovered, it’s easier to cut more later ;)
@junehutchinson3658
@junehutchinson3658 3 года назад
Also, as you take weight/length off hair, it tends to lighten/spring up and look shorter. Especially if cut wet. I had a low forehead when younger. If I measured to top of my brow, from my hairline, I would end up with a fringe like moustache halfway up my forehead😬🙄😒😢!! My bangs and I usually looked liked the younger daughter on 'Father Knows Best'. LMBO In Beauty school, I learned to start farther back on my hairline, and cut to about middle of eye, or longer. 🤗

@@junehutchinson3658 - that is why its important to have the Hair Fall free when choosing the length... I have a ‘2 head’ ( as in my forehead is 2 fingers wide) and to combat that while having ‘real bangs’ I took the very front section ( about 1 cm width ) and cut up to the hairline... that gave me the illusion of a higher forehead and thus a better look ;)

I want to try henna, but I use Matrix's demi, Color Sync 8CG on my roots. Will I be ok with that combo?
@sabinahertzum9728
@sabinahertzum9728 3 года назад
@@reneekh3599 - its about what you are aiming for... henna is NOT a demi permanent color, it’s even more permanent than any chemical permanent color... The difference between henna and regular color is that a normal color opens the cuticle of the hair slightly before depositing color, while henna only deposits - but the henna particles are not really penetrating, they are sitting in the cuticle and staining the hair.... So while henna still fades, it can’t really be removed.... So if you at any time in the near future are thinking of changing up your color, then DONT do henna.... the only option after henna is going darker.... But if you are committed to the red and willing to experiment a bit with the color - go ahead... Henna is an organic product - so while it will go red, it’s not like looking in a color swatch book... you never know exactly what hue it will come out as.... and as I said above, what you mix in will affect the color.... lemon is great for amping up the orange for example.... red wine is great for going burgundy, and coffee is great for deepening the color.... You do need the warm water to mix it in, because that is what really activated the henna particles.... The reason for using a color on the roots is because the henna doesn’t penetrate or open the cuticle, so some people have a hard time getting henna to stick to new growth....

just adding this as another voucher for henna: been dyeing my hair with it for 8 years. i also use box dye first to lift my roots bc my hair is naturally medium brown, but i just use a nondescript dark blonde for that, bc i like my red to be a shade or two darker than rachel’s. i prepare my henna with only warm water (apparently letting it simmer can destroy the pigments, so i’m always careful abt that), then i use one of those electric hand mixers to make it real smooth bc i does tend to clump. then i just let it sit for a bit and periodically test it by putting a little on my hand and waiting a couple minutes-if it leaves a very orange stain, it’s good to go. i apply it to dry hair just to make it easier to see where i’m putting it, wrap it and sleep in it. then wash in the morning and voilà. that has never damaged my hair, on the contrary. HOWEVER, i can’t stress enough that it is permanent. like “forever” type of permanent. no bleach will get rid of it and it *will* destroy your hair to try it. believe me, i’ve tried. oh, and to me henna just smells like herbal tea. ☺️ i’ve definitely smelled worse hair things. lol

It's funny, everyone talks about how messy henna is, but IME it's *much* less messy than direct dyes (type Arctic Fox, Manic Panic etc.)! They really stain everything immediately, whereas henna doesn't. I *love* henna, also the smell, to me it smells like black tea more than anytihing else :) (I'd buy a henna perfume if someone made it!) But don't use it anymore as the colour is not the most flattering for me, as I'm naturally cooler toned, so orange hair isn't really the best for me. Also, my hair doesn't hold curl at all if hennaed...

I love henna. It's a game changer for me. For one thing, it doesn't fade like box red dyes. And it is a bit messier and time consuming, but you don't have to do it as much. Once you get into the routine it's fine. And it's so much better for your hair. Mine dyes my roots just fine too. I wonder why it doesn't work for Rachel. I add Amla powder for better dye release and let it sit for at least 8 hours. Yogurt might hinder dye release a bit with its proteins, but I'm not sure.

I love the smell of henna as well. I've always been fond of musky and earthy scents. I'm just putting this out there, but if you wanted to experiment with shades of henna you could always add indigo. There's a place in Portland (OR) that does henna based dyes in a variety of shades. I've only used the pure henna from them so I can't vouch for the results of the other shades but it might be worth a look? Look up henna color lab.

The “whole ass hair routine” joke caught me by surprise, so I laughed with a mouth full of pretzels and nearly choked. 😂

To be fair not everyone feels like that. Some people feel like guys is too gendered

People are offended by everything nowadays, who would get offended at that?? There are more things that actually matter to be upset about than a term like guys that have been used for decades now

It's not that the term 'guys' will offend people, but it's more inclusive to use gender neutral terms to address the audience. The term 'guys' definitely has gendered connotations even if it's intended as a neutral term in some contexts. Nobody is saying Rachel is a bad person for saying 'guys', but a lot of peeps would probably feel more comfortable watching if she used gender neutral terms.

Guys isn't gender neutral in my opinion - and the fact that it is used that way is to mind a symbol of how gender-masculine is the neutral form in society and men are posited as the norm even though 50% of the population at not men

I really like how the bangs turned out, actually! They're perkier when you curl them, and the "sexy cool rachel" vibes are definitely there :^)

I - We do understand Rachel. When I talk to people personally or through Zoom I need my hands and arms free so that I can talk and express better, too. And I definitely enjoyed this whole hair dying tutorial, I love your sense of humor, and Frodo's bath and hair redo and his sense of humor. I am glad to see you so happy! I hope all is well and happy New Year to you and your small family! 💖💖💖💖
